What's a beginner called?

skigumby

In rock climbing you call them a gumby (I'm climber if you can tell from my name...) and in mountain biking you call them joeys. What about skiing? I'm labeling myself one forever for starting this thread...

Why is it important that we label and stigmatize inexperienced people?

I call them skiers.

Jerry =/= Beginner. You can be a skier for your entire life and still be a Jerry if you have a wack attitude or do ignorant shit.

If anything I'd call a new skier a grom but thats more of a snowboard term IMO

Groms are just kids, whether it's their first time on skis or if it's kai jones

How's about just calling them beginners

Gapers are the skiers who ski 4x a year on their annual trip from texas to aspen and will tell you they've 'skied their whole life'. It's different.

Jerry/Gaper: Skis a couple of times a year, or just bad at skiing. Often douchey

Grom: Child who may or may not be good at skiing. I've also heard Grom used to describe a significant other that is being taught to ski

Beginner: could be a jerry, but only if they are doing something completely wrong other than being bad at skiing.

Beginners. Fuck this labelling newcomers bullshit. Got mad respect for anyone trying it out, especially as an adult. Save kook/gaper/jerry for people who actually deserve it.

A beginner is simply a newcomer to the sport

A jerry is one who will tell you they’ve been skiing for 20 years but only have 40 or so days in their skiing career

leave those who are getting into this stuff for all the reasons we did alone, man. Its all fun, and we've all had plenty of experiences bagging on gapers, but its just playing more into barriers to entry in our sport and keeps things exclusive. Not everyone is some rich asshole from Cali on an ikon pass.

These are the bread and butter of the ski industry. We may provide the media culture, but they are the ones buying day lessons/rentals/tickets, getting full lunches in the lodge, and over paying for goggles when they forget their own. Without these Gapers we would pay too much to ski or have to earn all our turns. Maybe the culture would be solid, but we would suffer in diversity. Plus who would be amazed at our crappy nose butter 3s.

tldr: Respect the Gapers
