What would you do?

I talked with a US Air Force recruiter today and it really through a wrench in my plans.

spark notes at the bottom.

I have always wanted to enter the military, the only problem is that I also wanted to ski bum for a few years after I graduate high school. The recruiter did not think this was a good idea, since very few civilians make it into OTS (officer training school). If I was currently enlisted though and after tech school I would have a very high chance of making it into OTS.

I am going to be a senior in high school and dont have a huge interest in doing more schooling. the thing I really like about enlisting is that I am guaranteed a 1400 per week through basic and tech school, and if I sign a 6 year I get an extra two stripes out of tech school and also a signing bonus.

now here is the problem, for basic I would be sent to lackland AF base which is in texas. so no skiing there, and I could be stationed somewhere with no skiing. The offset to that is that every year every airman gets a 30 day leave to go anywhere I would like so I could use that time to go skiing.

SPARK NOTES: do I enlist right out of school, or do I take a few years off and ski bum for a while?

Ski bum 100%, but make sure you have a plan for after, it sounds like you do. Everyone I've ever talked to either regrets not taking a lap year(s) or raves about theirs. Unless its going to hurt your chances in the long run which it sounds like it might, taking a year or two off to reavaluate is a great idea!

I'm also thinking about the Air Force, but I just completed sophomore year college. I Am only going to do Air Guard though as they pay for school. And after basic, if you get stationed in new mexico at Kirkland AFB, Taos Ski Resort is only a couple of miles away. My friend is at Kirkland now and he loves it. He also said Taos is pretty enjoyable. But to answer your question, do it right out of high school, that way your six years are up quicker and you can become the ski bum you want to be.

ski if you can get yourself a sponsor.... butttt if thats not in the picture maybe you shoulf inlist... its good to have something to fall back on.

thanks for reading the thread.

that is also why you sign a contract for an agreed amount of time and you can renew or get out after that. but yeah there is no getting out.

if you are worried about money go to north dakota for a summer you make 5000 every two weeks, get rich during summer ski all winter. thats what i do yeah?

i operate a filter unit and manage semi trucks, but you could be a rig hand lol if you wanted to live in your car since the housing is near impossible to get you could work at kfc for 16.50 per hour. its a fuckin money pit

I remember someone on NS joining the air force. Anyone know who I'm talking about? You should talk to him, ask him for advice

1. i work 120 hours a week for two weeks doing what i hate

2. i go home for two weeks, do that all summer

3. quit in october

4. go to argentina, cause i feel like it.

5. ski and snowmobile all winter, not working, going wherever the snow is good

6. go to hood in the spring

7. go back to work in june

8. do it all over again

9. ???

10. profit?

sounds better to me imo

well its all up to you, personally i would do air force if given that option because its a once in a lifetime opportunity, i do believe there is some ways for civilians to go straight to officers through some programs as well.

well, that right there is why i don't have any interest in it. like i said before, i love my job. i wake up every morning excited to to go to work. just because i like living a normal life and having a normal schedule doesn't make me a pussy.

and OP, do whatever makes you happy. for me personally i know it would be hard to ski bum it for a couple years and then go in to the military; those lifestyles are just about as polar opposite as you can get. but i have to agree with most people that if you don't do it now you probably won't get a chance later in life. i guess it all depends on your personality.

Wait you're still in high school?

and you have insanely ignorant political, social, and ethical opinions already?

just an update.

it is now official, went through the military entrance processing station (MEPS) yesterday. I signed my contract and took the oath of enlistment.

I will be in the delayed entry program (DEP) until I ship out to basic, shipping is contingent on reciving my high school diploma. I will get to choose my job, hopefully I get my choice of job which is 1A7X1 aerial gunner.

One thing I know for sure is that I am going to ski a ton this season, because who knows when I will be able to ski again.

Related to op: remember that recruiters say whatever they have to, to get you signed up. They have quotas to fill, so they'll lie all day until you start signing papers. My brother in law was a recruiter and couldn't handle the amount of deceit he was forced to expel. So IMO go ski bum (best time of your life and do it while you still can) and then sign up later, if you're still interested.
