to start off I am a runner, have been for what seems forever now and the same goes for being a skier

I just transfered to a school in Albany and will be attending this fall and I am going into my jumior year. I run it all. I was a decath person, so when I say Ice ran it, I have. Now I seem to be caught up in a spot. I run a 47 point 400 not all that great but its dece. I also run the 110hurdles in low 15 high 14's which is bad, I have a slow/lazy trail leg. Now In my college meets I run decath If the meets has it(nothing else if I run decath) if it doesnt i run the 4x4 open 4 110's 4x1 if its a good meet and High jump long a triple. Now since I realize Im not the greatest at the 110's I was thinking of the 400 hurdles. Ran its back acouple times in High school. So this past weekend i decided to try them out and a local USATF meet. Now this is where it gets me. I ran a 53 point. Now i have two more years of college running to get it down. I just got off the phone with a coach in Orgon who offered to train me and such. But I told him thatI wanted to finish school and get my degree first. It was a convo over an hour about my running and my potential. Guy never saw me run but he saw my time and after i told him it was my first time and what not he went into it. This is where the olympic come into play. What kid hasent dreamed about going and rep'ing their Country. The a standards for the trials is a 49 and the B standard is a 51. Seems fucking fast and it isbut I believe I can get my times down in four years. But my problem is ever year I have ran I have gotten hurt (since fucking 7th grade) and skiing has been a cause acouple times.

Now im at the point where I really want to work on my training. But I love skiing, Love park, love the pow and what not. But being 20 my time in the park is running low. I cant fall and get right back up like I use to. Shit hurts now adays.

Now if you are from around the 518 and are a runner you prob hear about Joe Greene(ualbany runner). 48 point in the 400 hurdles and he is running in the olympic trials this weekend(good lcuk bud) and hes done this year or next with school and going to go coach with this guy now.

Most ruuners peak at 22-25

Now back to the skiing point. Would you take timeoff of sking to focus on your running and mayb some day rep your country in the Olympics?

*note that there are alot of spelling and grammer errors butim tired and still in disbelief.

So I ask you NS what would YOU do?

I have a shot load of thinking to do and alotof timeto do it.

Thanks

*no claims just need some input from fellow skiers

Dude remember who your talking to. Nsers is a bunch of young teenagers barely through the first stages of life. You probably have a good five years on the majority of kids here. This is your decision to make. If i were you i wouldnt be putting this in a bunch of 14 year-olds hands. BUt regardless of what you decide to do, good luck!

if i were you i would take it easy and shred nice soft pow, but also focus on running. skiing can kind of be your break from reality. i am in the same situation kind of with baseball man. except i think im choosing skiing because ill never go pro or anything like you man. you could go to the olympics and thats huge. im sure you could still find a lot of time in the off season to shred the pow and some park. either way youll have a lot of fun

it's your call. i personally would love the opportunity to rep america in the olympics, that would be an amazing memory and one of the highlights of your life. i would go for that, but that's just me. but doing that doesn't mean you totally have to give up skiing, you can still do a bit of it. but i wouldn't pass up a sick opportunity like the olympics.

well ask yourself this question ...... do you really love running the same way you love skiing ? or do you just do it cause your good at it ? its sounds stupid but put some thought into it i had to ask myself the same question between hockey and skiing . i definetly didnt have the potential that you had but still i played rep hockey .. i choose skiing and never looked back or regretted

Im old and I still ride tons of park and suck at it worse than ever... but if youre strong and in shape you should be able to run and ski your ass off regardless of your age. if you really want this shit, go get it, get off the interweb and go make shit happen... if magic can do it, so can you.

true never thought off that ^ if your that good at running your body should be in top form ... and if you chose running win and get interviewed you better mention NS aha

i think that it would be a sick oportunity to be able to run that competitivly so i would def kind of take a little break from skiing. i wouldnt be able to do that but i mean you can just shy away from park for a while... or just ride easier in the park and still have a good time kickin it with friends. plus pow skiing is the best and as long as you dont rip real hard youll be fine and be able to do both. so i say go for the running and just take it easy skiing because you will still be able to enjoy yourself and get out there on the mountain

quit running because it's painful and ghey and stick to skiing, or instead of taking the lift just run up the hill and ski down, but you're a mean person so stick with running and be in pain

I actually have the same situation as you but to much less of a degree. I run competetively during cross country for high school and am decent but I prefer skiing to running. Because of this I just stop running during the winter to ski and lose everything I worked for during cross country but I dont suggest that if you have a chance to go to the Olympics. Maybe you could just ski the lighter stuff like powder (it gives lots of exercise), train after a day of skiing even though it may be tiring it will get you working harder, and do a lot of the hiking while at the mountain as exercise.

I ran collegiately for 2 years and tried to ski on the side and all I can say is that you should either drop skiing and go with running or drop running and turn ski bum. If youre training at that level you wouldnt want to go out on an easy ski day and tear your acl, trust me ive seen it happen, i quit running for skiing and i work ski patrol, people do it doing really innocent stuff. So basically, Id drop your skis for a couple years if youre into this because this is your one chance in a lifetime for track, and if you want to ski after that trust me i see 35 yos in the park all the time, just saying if youve ever been hurt before, even minorly, you kow that all the effort youre going to put into training at that level would absolutely kill you if you hurt yourself skiing.

yo dude i had pretty much the same problem as you...i used to be obsessed with running and triathlon, used to run high 30s/low31 min 10kms and 8.27 3kms, and mtn running was my focus. i got to the point where i had to pursue one or the other... i was training 14 times a week for running(core sessions&recovery as well as running).then i got sick and had to stop.i tried to get back into it but i realised that, no matter what everyone else wanted, i wanted to ski.you gotta do what you love.something that makes you happy, something that is fun.i'll ski for the rest of my life.sure it might hurt everynow and then, but a shitty day up the mountain was, in the end, better than fucking my body twice a day so that i couldnt hardly move after.

so i choose skiing and fuck is it waaay better!

but, that said, like i pointed out, you gotta do what makes you feel best.in the end its not about beating some other guy in a race, but if you like it.

good luck with your decision buddy, its a hard one to make

your never gonna have an opportunity like the olympics again in your life. nothing will ever compare to that, even trying. you will be skiing until your fuckin 70s if all goes well, but the olympics is a one time opprotunity. id go for it man. best of luck.

Focus on running, train hard. You can always ski well into your 60s even if it not extreme, your still skiing. But wiht runnging you cant, take running.

I have the same problem. I run a 49.0 as a junior in high school. I may have a chance at the Olympics, but most likely not. I can at least get scholarships for college, but I don't really want to run in college because of the time commitment. A 47 in college isn't bad, but you need to drop 2-3 seconds for Olympics. That's a lot of time. If you feel that you have a good chance to get on the USA team, I would go for it. Don't just half-ass it though. Train nonstop, run against as many faster runners as you can. Get your coach and teammates to back you.

If your chances seem pretty slim, stick with the skiing. If it hurts to fall, train to put on the muscle to toughen your body, ski pow, take it easy in the park. If you progress enough, you still may get a sponsor, show others your age that they're not too old to ski. You don't have to be 17 to be able to make a living off of skiing.

i would keep doing skiing, but not on a hard level, because skiing is a very good way to keep your legs strong, and so it could help your running out. but i definitely would not ski as hard in the park, for your healths sake.

You'll regret it if you don't take the chance. Just do it, and take it easy skiing and stick to the soft stuff

I'm in a very similair situation.I love skiing and if I had a future in it I would quit running in a drop of a hat, but I am a much more talented at running. My first year of univeristy was a mess because 6 days a week I'd train my ass off for running and my body would be worn to the ground and then on my day off I'd go to the mountain and ski park.Led to a major injury. Skiing and running are two very different sports and neither really help each other.

Hands down I enjoy skiing more, but unfortunately there's no varsity freestyle skiing teams. I took time off school to try and get good at skiing had the best time of my life, but the lifestyle was not sustainable, had no food in the fridge, spent way too much time partying and was dirt broke.

track however; I have a chance to get my degree, travel for free with team across North America and get some very high quality training.

I've taken the time to do both and I know running is whats best for me but I have a hard time qutitng skiing, hell even this summer I set up a rail in my yard, have made trips to the water ramps and am planing a trip to whistler to ski in july.

If the Olympics for track are your goal in life I'd say put away the skis for a few years, if you're anything like me there's no such thing as skiing lightly. And although skiing is evolving quickly it will always be there, and you do the ski bum thing once you've finished with track.

If you have a coach at Oregon who actually thinks you have legit shot at the Olympics I think thats an opportunity you can't let slide.

What would you do if you didn't make the olympics after all that training? Would you still be happy with what you chose to do even if you didn't make it? I would choose running if you like it alot, not because you can make it to the olympics.

Personally I would go skiing, but thats just my answer to everything.

If I were in your position I would more than likely chose running though, sounds like you have more invested into it.

im a teenager. Take a break from park skiing. If you can make a living doing something you love go for it. If you fail you can always come back and ski.

yo id choose running if you have a chance at making the olympics, and if you like running... because you wont be able to train hard enough to make it to the olympics if you dont like what your doing

You know what man? I really can't believe I'm saying this, but I would run. 100%. You can always come back to skiing in a few years, and even keep track on NS. It'll be a bummer not to ski, but man the Olympics and anything close to it is big shit man, thats stuff that will affect your future for the better soooooo much. I can't lie, in my eyes that outweighs skiing. So yeah, I hate to say it, but I'd say run your heart out and keep us posted. I'd support you

dang man whats your name so i can cheer for you?? I run track in a university as well, im a triple jumper though. good luck, I'd definitely go for running since you can ski for the rest of your life, but you can't train at a high level in running for your entire life

Follow your heart man.
I decided to give up with my swimming, i was at national level and possible commonwealth (euro) and could have made it.i felt like it was too much pressure, all i did was train, like you with your 14 session weeks. it was bringing me down and I was losing focus of life outside.

This is obviously a bit more extreme than your case, but you are asking yourself whether it'd be worth it. Ask yourself if you can really see you being commited to this for the next four years? No choice about it, it will become your focus every minute of the day.

Or is enjoying running and being at a high standard within your state good enough for you? this will then allow you to be more chill with things, and enable to to ski more and enjoy life a bit more.
Follow your heart, it's that simple.

Simple... Completely the wrong word.
I realise how complicated this decision is.
Sorry for saying that.

skiing is forever. and it seems like you have a career opening before your eyes in running, not skiing.

if you don't want to go pro in skiing, then hell drop it for a few years and run, you're chances seem higher from that you're telling us.

you can still ski, but it will just be a rare leisurely activity.

if you love skiing more than running though, then you have a problem.

Yeah it is a hard decision but you have to do what you have to do and that is that, if you have to run you run. if you have to ski it deep you ski it deep. this is a decision that you have to make for yourself not for anyone else.

haha forreal

running fucking sucks so bad . I did that shit in middleschool but , fuck i dont know why someone would do it past that age
