What type on camera? (photo)

Ok, i've been a photo enthusiats for a while now. Last year, i used my mom and dads cannon A610 or w/e its called, and got some decently nice shots.

Now, i was always looking into getting a video camera, but i've recently decided that I really want to get a new photo camera. I think a digital SLR would be nice. Now, i dont know that much about photographs and things, and i am taking a class this upcoming year, but im not sure which semester it is.

What is a good SLR or camera to start with, i'm looking for under 700 bucks and atleast 6 mp. I figure bhphoto.com is one of the best places to shop for cameras and things alike, and i know the whole, if it looks too good to be true, it is ordeal.

So, does any one have any suggestions on cameras and or stores to buy from.
 
well, waiting for answers gets boring, so i did some more research.

I've decided on either a Rebel XT or XTi. I've heard terific things about the 30d, but its just too much $$$. Now, my real questions are

1.XT or XTi?

2. Also, by shopping from bhphoto.com, i've heard that the lense that comes with each one if i buy the kit (Canon 18-55mm EF-S Lens) really sucks. So lets say i buy either the XT or XTi body, what is a good lense from bh? I honestly have no clue what would make a good lense and what wouldn't.
 
xti if you cant afford the 20 or 30d then defs. the xti my friend got one recently pretty sick i mean im partial to my 30D just because its a little bit more sturdy and built better. but xti will defs do what you want. as for lenses your kinda stuck i mean i have used that starter lens 18-55mm its not bad but. for anything better your gonna dig deep into your pockets like paying as much if not more than the body of the camera itself.

a wise man once told me. its not the camera its the lenses.
 
thanks a lot. anyone else got some input, im still unsure to weather i wanna spend the extra on the XTi, i have the money but its always nice to have some extra cash if you know what im sayin
