What type of camera?

Hey ns,

So I was thinking of getting into doing some photography this summer. I honestly know nothing about cameras. I just think it'll be pretty fun to get into taking pictures and editing them. So what would be a good camera that I could easily learn how to use? I don't really have a price budget, but under 1000$ would be nice. It would be cool if it also took video, but its not a requirement. I would also not like it to be super bulky and big.

Also, what photo editing software do you guys all use? And any tips you guys have about anything would be awesome!

I was in your're same position two months ago and bought a Nikon d40 body on eBay used for 200 and a very nice Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm lens also used for 200 at my local camera shop. So for $400 and reading a lot of photo blogs and tip guides I now take pictures like these from my blog...

My point is you can take amazing pics for low $$ and have a blast doing it.

Oh, and as for software, for photography Lightroom 4 is a good place to start. It is incredibly easy to use and surprisingly powerful. Photoshop CS6 is obviously more powerful, but it is a lot more confusing to use and you'd have to put the time in to really understand the software.

If you want something compact look into a mirrorless camera instead of a DSLR. Same functions and great performance, but a lot smaller. Check out stuff like the Sony NEX-5 and 7.
