What type of camera do you use?

For all you photographers and videographers out there, what type of camera are you using? Some of you take some great shots and I'm interested in knowing what you use for these. I'm having trouble deciding between a high-end digital camera (Minolta DiMage s414 4mp, 4x optical, $400 Canadian), a good quality digital SLR (Minolta DiMage 7i 5mp etc. $1100 Canadian) or an entry level 35mm SLR Camera ($400 Canadian) and a decent quality film scanner ($400 Canadian).

I really want a digital for the reason that I can revue my pics and that I don't always have to get my film developed, that I can just have them right on the comp right away, do you think I should go for a digital? and, should I go for the digital SLR? Because Manual focus is something I need and the Minolta DiMage 7i Is just such a damn beautiful camera.

well heres how i see it..... you can always get the digital and print off any real good pics on photo paper.... so you can frame them or give them to people plus have them on your computer.... wheras the reg camera you have to scan and shit and you have an actually paper copy of even the shitty pics you dont like.... whereas you can just print off select ones from a digital camera.... id go digital... but a good digital one...

steve i would definately go for tyhe digi slr if you have the money. even if it doesnt take quite as nice pics i'd say for learning photograohy it is definately worth it, being able to take tons of pictures and viewing them right away is priceless. you will learn and get alot better really quick, and i think enjoy and get more out of it.

well, i recently got a Canon Rebel Ti with a 50mm EF f/1.8 lens. The canon 50mm lens is said to be the sharpest, best lenses under $1000. The few rolls that i have had developed were excellent quality.the canera is about $350 canadian (body only) and the lent is $150.

If you have the cash to spend on a digital SLR, then go for it.

If you plan on shooting skiing, then your going to want a telephoto or a telezoom lens. Tne ones that come with the camera are garbage. Most of the people that i have asked asked that know what they are doing have compared the stock lenses with that of a disposable camera. A semi decent telephoto or zoom will cost you about $300-$2000, so keep that in mind when buying.

is the DiMage 7i.

I think it's such a sick camera, it can take 7 FUCKING FRAMES PER SECOND at 1mp quality. And, for higher quality I can take 2 fps at 5mp quality. 7x optical zoom is also another thing that makes me horny to think about. 4-1/4000 shutter speeds is pretty good, so far I haven't used the shutter on my cam for anything over around 2 seconds so 4 should be fine for slow shutter pics.

So yeah, I think I'm gonna save up as much as I can and probably buy this camera. Thanks for your help people and keep posting opinions and shit.

all are great choices.

I have looked into these cameras extensively, so here's my 2 cents.

The minolta. it's an awesome camera it's one of the best. It has alot of adjustable settings, one of the downsides of it is that it's hard to take a good point and shoot picture. It's not really meant for amateurs meaning that it's easy to take a bad picture if you don't know how to configure aperture/white balance/ etc.

Olypmus 50-50. great camera. one of the highest rated.

Both are great cameras.

If you have both the money and interest in photography then I would go for the digital SLR.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

 
My $0.02 worth -

The biggest difference between Digital and Film cameras (other than chips versus film and how you print the image) is where the creative control is.

On a film SLR or even better, a medium format if you have the skills and the dollars, you can control how the light hits the film. That lets you play with the depth of field, and all sorts of other nuances that don't always come out the same in digital. With digital, you can photoshop away to your heart's content right away without having to mess with scaners and the quality thereof.

If I were starting out, I wouldn't bother with an entry level SLR, I would go get a good used one. Pro photographers are often getting rid of old camera bodies. If you can get a hold of a Nikon F1 - oooo - good stuff. A Pentax k1000 is a really solid body that you can get for a hundred or two. The quality of the shot that you get is mostly going to be based on the lens that you have. Better the lens = better clairity as well as wider aperture range, which lets you shoot in more varied light conditions and with wider applications. Lenses are spendy though.

The biggest thing isn't what you are holding in your hand though, the guy shooting is what is going to make the biggest difference. Burn lots of film, take a class or read a good book about it, and burn lots of film.

 
Go for the digital. So much better. We just got one it's so cool. But you have to get lots and lots of batteries!

6.3 megalpixal and a bunch of other nice shiot. I prefer canon to nikon. canon makes there cameras with a much lighter body than nikon and thats nice when your skiing around with it. nikons are just too heavy

im using 35 mm format... nikon FM3a... was using a 80-200mm nikon 2.8 but got nothing right now cause im too poor... trying to get some $$$ to buy a lens... i prefer manual cameras vs digi... but i usually cary a shitty 1 mp camera w/ me so i can at least take a look at my shot bf i shoot... i like that feature better about digi, i waste a lot less film...

its a great camera but the only thing i didnt like is the sequences can only take 5 shots in a row, and u cant specify the speed to shoot at

If you've got the cash for the 7i, go for it for sure - it's an awesome camera, I've been eyeing it up for a while. Just now I'm using a Canon Ixus V2. Not too high-spec, but it gets the job done great and the small size is a big plus - even once I upgrade I'll still use it a lot for general photos when it's nice to have soimething you can fit in your jeans pocket.

Digital definately will save you a load of money in the long run if you're serious about this, plus it's cool to show people the results straight after you take the shots (hook it up the a TV for a slide show once you come off the slopes - sweet), verses waiting for prints to be developed. If you want something good, don't get too caught up about the frames per second - you'll have to pay for it - the 7i is the cheapest one I've seen over 5fps, and it retails at about $1000. If you want something cheaper, the Canon G_ line are very nice. You can't really go wrong with anything from Canon, Nikon, Fuji or Minolta - just weight up the spec and price. Aperture and shutter priority are worth paying for as they'll really let you control the exposure needed for snow shots.

my dad has a year old normal camera with 55mm lense, i dunno if thats good or not. its not digital or anything, but if its good maybe i should start doing pictures

I was looking at the 10D too because I love Canon cameras but the price just wasn't right for me. I'd say, for you, to get that one or if they have one that's weather-proof it'd be another good choice, cause your shots are so sick and I think this cam would be pretty good for skiing shots.

Right now I'm in even more of a fix because I really don't know what camera to go for. I want something that's not too advanced for me but can have the manual stuff for when I need it. I'm using a 100% manual 35mm SLR right now but I haven't done any action besides a slow-shutter shot of my brother juggling a soccer ball.

I have a Nikon F90X with a 70-300mm lens, and a 24-80mm lens. It is quite nice.

You should belive everything you read on the internet, it's all true.
 
OK SO HERE IS MY QUESTION, what is the best digital i can get for $300 or under i was gunna buy a mad expensive one over $1000 but i want to start smaller so whats the best for $300?

I'm getting a Canon Elan 7 SLR Autofocus.... 1/4000 to 30 sec. shutter, up to 9 exposures per frame for the multiple exposures and that crap.. its my second camera but yeh... hopefully itll work out well.

 
NH_Line, you could get a shit load of good cameras for $300. Just go to www.dealtime.com and type in the names of any camera you come across and many of them will be under $300.

Look for these features:

- try and get one over 3mp for good 300dpi prints

- get the fastest as well as slowest shutter speeds

- high iso equivalent

- exposure settings, white balance etc

- continuous shooting if you wanna make sequence

- macro focus for closeups

- optical zoom (very important)

And... read the reviews too.

Cameras for $300: I'd say get something really compact that you'll use a lot. That way you'll be able to take it everywhere with you, not just skiing, and so you'll get more practice with it. It will also mean that you'll have a great small backup/second camera once you upgrade.

I use a Canon S200 (Ixus V2) - awesome little camera. It's only 2Mp, 2x zoom, but it's great for my usage - check out the galleries at strathsnow.co.uk for some examples. Check out the new S400 - 4Mp, 3x zoom - really awesome little camera, $500 SRP though.

I use a canon ZR45 lol man I look cheep to use this but we use it in sk8boarding and it's doing decent thing for now

elan 7e is a good camera, however, the lense mount on nikons will accept older as well as newer lenses. In other words you have to buy brand new lenses for canon, and nikons have better older lenses at your disposal.

If i had tons of money I would get the Nikon F5 so damn sick. But im going to get a medium format 120 camera before buying a new 35mm. medium format is so much better. A new Hasselblad would be primo.

if i were you i would get a nice slr(film) like an elan 7 or eos 3, b/c u can just scann the prints/slides/negitives if you want to work on them in photoshop.but you can also get the quality of film if you want to go that rout. also it will be cheaper to get a good slr then an equal digital camera.

 
I would go for the Canon Digital Rebel SLR, its a really nice camera. Go to canons website and check it out. Should be around 900 bucks in stores, or so.

 
Oh jesus don't get a digital camera unless you can afford a really nice one and for god sakes DON'tT get a Minolta. Get a Nikon or a Canon.
