Okay, I just got back from a 100+ mile backpacking trip yesterday. I met up with a couple of my friends and we decided to go see a movie. We saw “The Island,� admirably 31 flavors of suck. Nothing special. After we got out from the movie my friend Dylan wanted a frappuccino, so we decided to stop at a $tarbucks on the way back.

So we pull into the paring lot, hop out of car, and walk towards the door. As we reach the entrance Starbucks, there is this random kid standing outside that shoots my friend Terrance a nasty look. He had a bit of an unsightly look about him: skinny, tight jeans, and a black t-shirt with cut-off sleeves. We didn’t think much of it and headed on in. We bought our coffee uneventfully and went back outside to Terrance’s car.

We come out the door and that kid is still there, now with what looked like his friend and his girlfriend. He flicked his cigarette and it hit Terrance’s shoe. I think all three of us figured it was by accident, so we kept walking to the car. I then heard over my shoulder the kid saying, “Nice pink shirt queer.� It was obviously directed at Terrance who was indeed wearing a pink shirt. I don’t think Terrance heard him, so we continued walking to his car.

As I opened the door to the car and said to the kid, “Nice cut-off shirt queer.� We jump into the car we all hear the kid saying sarcastically, “I’m spoiled and drive an H3 because I’m rich.� This was also directed at Terrance. It was obvious this kid was looking for a fight, but T decided to ignore him.

As Terrance was pulling the car out of the parking spot the kid walks around to the front the car and spits on the hood. I had had enough. I jumped out of the car and walked over to this ock. Dylan and Terrance were still in the car. I asked the guy, “What the fuck is your problem?�

He replies, “Ooh, are you trying to act tough pretty boy?�

“Excuse me?!� I snap back, he’s starting to boil my blood at this point. Dylan gets out of the car and is walking over. Terrance is still in the car but opened his door, engine still running. Terrance is a fairly passive person and never keen on fighting. He wouldn’t lift a finger on anyone unless he was cornered. I didn’t hold it against him he wasn’t racing to my side.

The kid opens his fucking mouth again, “Go back to your fucking mansion pretty boy.� That’s all it took. I pulled off my hoodie, tossed it on the ground, threw my right fist, hit him in the cheek, and laid the kid flat on his ass. The kid’s friend starts on me. He misses my head but then and connects with my stomach. Dylan runs over and starts exchanging punches with him. I’m hunched over trying to catch my breath, seeing as I got the wind knocked out of me. The kid I originally knocked flat was still on the ground holding his face like a little bitch. Terrance is out of the car at this point and running to help Dylan. I suck in some oxygen in and run over to help. With the three of us now, it was more of a gang beating than a fight. We quickly beat the snot out of him and turned back to that pussy that started taking shit in the first place. I yelled at him, “Don’t talk shit about people you don’t know!�

“Dude, lets get out of here.� Terrance said. He and Dylan were walking back to the car. Standing over the kid I spit in his face and kicked him in the side. I jumped back in the car and we drove off.

That kid really struck my nerve. The actual fight aside, I started thinking, what really was that kid’s problem? He obviously has a grudge with wealthy people. Why though? Yes, my friend Terrance does come from a very well-to-do family, but he’s not a jerk. He is in fact one of the nicest and most outgoing people I’ve met. He is also not ungrateful that his family is very fortunate. He also a very bright kid too.

Is Terrance less of a person because he can afford expensive cloths and drive a nice car? Does having money make you and asshole? Apparently that dick in the Starbucks parking lot thought so.

That kid was holding everything against my friend. What did Terrance do to bring on that kind of hostility? Does that kid believe everybody starts off life from the same level ground? I got some news for you DickFuck, its called life! Life isn’t always fair. It’s the luck of the draw. That’s just the way it is.

Does the kid assume that Terrance will never work a hard day in his life? Does the kid only think wealth comes from inheritance? There are plenty of self-made people in the world. My dad is one example. He grew up in a dirt-poor farm town and now he is the president of a multi-billion dollar bank. Is my father a lesser human being too?

My guess is that kid is probably envious of wealth. I’m sure he wouldn’t complain if he were in Terrance’s position. Its also ironic that he was down-talking rich people at a fucking Starbucks…a HUGE corporate establishment that charges five dollars for a cup of regular coffee. Way to be a hypocrite you piece of shit!

Why doesn’t that kid try and work hard to make a fortune? He sure isn’t going to achieve any kind of success by picking fights with total strangers. That kid was a hypocritical idiot! Its people like this that should be removed from the breeding pool. Enjoy your studio apartment! I hope I broke your fucking jaw!

terrance reminds me of me, not the rich part, but the not fighting part. I've never gotten in a fight. If I was t oget insulted I'd just be like whatever. Or be really nice to them, that gets them annoyed, because they're trying to get on your nerves and you act all nice it gets them pissed and they eventually stop.

Anyway, a gas station we pass. We got gas, and ran off to get grub.It was a nice little pub in the middle on nowhere. Anywhere woulda been better. I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em, Ali had the fruit punch.

First of all, I actually loved the way you retold your story. Very much enjoyed it, espicaly the "$tarbucks" - I dont know what that says about me, but there it is.

I think that it comes down to a problem of preception. We never, ever see rich people working hard at their jobs because we are never around them when they do. We just see them out enjoying their free time. In some people it leads to the thought process of "damn those people are lucky. Check out that car. I WISH i had that" its never "Damn they must have worked hard to get that. I wish i could be motivated to work that hard so I could have nice things". and because they dont understand that these people (or their parents) have worked hard their whole lives (4-12 extra years of school in some cases - who ever heard of a rich student? -10 year long aprentiships in others) to have the things that they have, they think that they deserve it too. But they dont, and thats why they hate people who seem to have everything. Because they want everyhting, and they think that it comes naturaly if your lucky, and not from hard work.

Mind you, at our age you do have to be fortunate to get these things, and I think that a big part of the hatred is that those who have look down on those who dont have - espically at our age simply because those who have are oblivious to the work that went into getting the things that they enjoy, either that or they dont realize that they are flaunting their parents wealth.

Those are my early morning incoherant thoughts on classism in north america. I hope they made some kinda sense.

Oh yah, The only rich people who are truly lucky are the ones who win the lottery.

Man that is a bunch of crap. I really have a short temper with people like that who give others crap because they are well off. It drives me crazy when people generalize and automatically think that you are stuck up or spoiled becuase of the car you drive or where you live or what you parents do for a living. The fact is that almost all wealthy people earn their money by working very hard. The thing that you eventually realize (which I'm sure you have since you and I are the same age) is that in a few years it won't matter what your parents do becuase you are going to have make a name for yourself and climb the ladder for yourself. Whoever says that all skiers have money isn't correct. My family is certainly far from high class. We live in a mobile home (in Mammoth, yes, but they moved to this very mobile home 18 years ago, and they have to move soon because we can't afford it.) I drive an '80's minivan and only have Public Enemies because I got them at the end of the season when they were on sale and I sold my other skis for some extra cash. I can only afford to ski because my dad works at the mountain so I get a free pass. I'd just like to point out that all skiers aren't rich...maybe the ones who travel and have a ton of nice shit, but not the ones like me.

And, for the record, your buddy sounded like a decent guy, but I really hate people who drive Hummers. They obviously care more about flaunting their wealth than anything else, such as the huge amount of gas that they're wasting.

Girls don't like sensitive guys. Since I don't treat women like objects, I have to treat objects like women.

Good story man, nicely told and they got what they deserved. People probably think about my family like that because we're pretty well off (I drive a shit car anyway...). I know my dad fucking busts his ass every day at work though, then he comes home and works more. He goes in all night sometimes and works weekends all the time. All I'm saying is sometimes people have money because they earned it, and it might not even be all it's cracked up to be.

I think, in one way, you were right. But in another way, you were so wrong.

The fact that you fought with this guy makes you no better than he. Infact, I bet you gave him satisfaction by punching him in the face and beating his friend.

If you would've just got inside your H3 and drove off playing some music, basically looking cool, he'd get more pissed off and that would be so much better than fighting, because all you did with the fighting was bring yourself down to their level.

When that guy started dissing you guys, he had the intention of fighting you, because then he could tell his friends how he got in a fight with some rich kids in an H3 and they teamed up on his buddy, and kicked him while he was down.

Is this what your parents/grandparents worked so hard for? So you could sit nicely inside the "rich brat" stereotype? You talk about how hard they worked to get where they are today, and that seems to be your mentality, so why would you do something like that? You talk about how you don't get respect, so how are you to get their respect?

Better was to handle the situation would've just been to say "whatever man" or something and just leave. He spit on the H3, oh no! Grab a rag and wipe it off, it's a car, not a face, which you spat on (gross, btw).

Just for the record to all of the critics, it was heat of the moment. I wasn’t about to sit there for an hour reflecting on my options.

As for the 3 on 1 thing, give me a break. The last thing that was on my mind was sitting down and scheduling a 1v1-sparing tournament those punks. I hit one guy, his bud came after me, Dylan and Terrance got my back (like good friends) and went at him. I was on the fucking ground after he hit me, you think at that point I gave a shit if it was fair? Nobody thinks about that kind of crap when they are in the middle of a fight. Hell, 20 other people were outside that Starbucks, as far as I knew, he could have been rolling with a crew. That fair fight stuff is crap unless you planed it in advance. I don’t like it when people fuck with my friends, so I stick up for them.

I was pissed that he was disrespecting my friend that he had NEVER met before. It might have been different if I knew the kid, or maybe not. I probably would have kicked the kid’s ass anyway regardless of the “financial� context. I don’t give a shit what he thinks about me now, his thoughts are his own, its how he acts that should matter. He gets what he deserves for being a bitter ass to total strangers. Maybe he’ll learn to show more self-restraint in public.

And to who ever said the “studio apartment� comment was hypocritical, go fuck yourself. If that kid acts like he did in public, imagine what he must be like at home, school, or work. You will go no were in life picking fights at every turn. I guarantee he will live in squalor his entire life if he acts that way all the time.

It may or may not have been the best action, but it’s done. It may have been more rash than it should have been, but I’m not sorry.

i used to deal with that all the time. i went to a really un wealthy school, which didnt bug me. they were all really good people. but my name around that school was rich bitch or something along those lines. one of the people i used to be friends with would always take my stuff. one day i found out and he just was kinda like, uhh, you can just go buy a new one.
