Emocore or Emo = Originally an arty outgrowth of hardcore punk, emo became an important force in underground rock by the late '90s, appealing to modern-day punks and indie-rockers alike. Some emo leans toward the progressive side, full of complex guitar work, unorthodox song structures, arty noise, and extreme dynamic shifts; some emo is much closer to punk-pop, though it's a bit more intricate. Emo lyrics are deeply personal, usually either free-associative poetry or intimate confessionals. Though it's far less macho, emo is a direct descendant of hardcore's preoccupations with authenticity and anti-commercialism; it grew out of the conviction that commercially oriented music was too artificial and calculated to express any genuine emotion.

I thank CB_BC_Hucker for giving an accurate and unbiased description of emo music. It seems to be cool to hate emo nowadays, so I'm glad someone could give a straight answer. And honestly, what is so bad about being emotional, you guys aren't too big for emotions are you? I'm not saying that all emo is good, but when people sing and play with emotion, it brings more meaning into the song.

Emo /eee-moe/ (short for emotional) is a genre of punk rock music. The term was originally applied to bands in the Washington DC punk scene who played a more raucous and emotional form of punk than the norm.
