I came across the term first in early 90's Transworld Snowboarding mags. I think it refers to the sustained shred sound that snowboards make on hardpack when sliding an entire edge at speed: the grind-down on the snow that made skiers and resorts hate on them when they first came on the scene. Although, I can shred on my skis, but I prefer not to for edge's sake.
