What NS needs - detailed reviews of new skis!

Ok, I play basketball as well as ski, and for any basketballer who liked shoes, there was only one place to go. http://www.kicksology.net/

It was the one-stop-shop for in-depth, interesting, informative reviews on pretty much all basketball shoes around. It has since shut down, but you can scroll down half the page on the above link to see a sample (Nike Huarache 2K4 if memory serves me).

My idea is that NS employs one or two people to go around and get some sample skis off reps, and then review them in an in-depth, interesting and informative way (much like the bball site), covering things like flex, turning ability, pop etc etc

We could make NS THE place to come for info (and pics) on new twin-tips. Obviously there wouldn't be a lot of support from the companies in the beggining, but after a while they would come to realise that an unbiased review could be very beneficial (especially if it is a positive one).

With the bball site, it got to the stage where the major producers gave their first releases to the site, in hope oof a positive review (although a lot, esp. Reebok got absolutely blasted). They knew that a positive review on Kicksolgy translated to more sales.

And this would save all those annoying threads like "how fat are the prophets???? can i race GS with them??"

My 2 cents.

not a bad idea except for the part where ns doesn't make enough money for that

'kevin whyed nils pull you out?' 'Cuz i was touchin bitches.' 'No seriously why did he put scott in for you.' 'Scott doesn't touch bitches.'

there are plenty of people floating around ns that always get a chance to ride next year's skis and some (not all) of them are able to provide pretty good reviews of all the skis.

all it would really take is one guy to go round and do it. i mean, the bball site only had one dude doing it all, and there is definitely a higher turnover rate of shoes than there is skis...

i dunno, its just something that i would like to see happen....

it would be cool, but another problem is finding someone with enough credibility that the ski companies trust their reviews. if someone started giving shitty reviews of a certain company (regardless of how true they may be), the company most likely will no longer want that person demoing their gear

Sure, joshbryant, I wonfder if he would be biased toward Line and smaller ski companies which he sells in his shop.. I'm thinking more like Ethan Stone/Doug Bishop, they go to the trade show in Vegas and all, so why not nab a few "test" skis.

I went to dealer days over the winter where dealers were showcasing next years stuff just told them I was a ski instructor Rossy and Salomon would not let me try but everyone else was cool. next year I would write up some reviews with NS backing me I could probably get all of the companies to let me in

that'd be pretty sweet, it'd definitely get rid of all the threads asking how stuff rides. Since the reviews on this site by members are ususally biased because the average person only has at most 2 pairs of skis.

this is actually freeskier's job. although they never really do a good job of it. things may get better. they've added some new people who have a good vision for that mag and what it should be.

It definately wont get rid of all the threads about the way stuff rides, the only way that is going to happen is if once reviews are put up there would be a strict policy against posts of that nature. Im actualy about 3/4 of the way making a program that asks what you like in a ski, or how you ski and recomends a few. Not just twin tips, but race skis and rec skis too. Of course the outcome of the searches would be based entirely on my opinion of how I thought things rode, but later some objectivity could be added in. Also plan on doing one for boots according to foot shape and what regular shoes fit your foot good.

^^sounds like a really good idea

The only problem i can think of with that system, as with the actual amazon system, is that there is a huge number of bullshit reviews. Your gonna end up with some kid that gives random skis/bindings/whatever low ratings and completely messes up the system. Its extremely hard to monitor a system like that and weed it out of reviews that shouldn't be included.

Freeskier magazine doesn't know how to review shit. You're talking about the magazine that claimed Yearbook to be "movie of the year", and their gear reviews read like ads for their advertisers.

I don't see it getting better any time soon.

The internet is for slandering others anonymously.

From the position of freeskier though they really can't afford to give unbiased reviews when nearly all of their revenue comes from ads of the companies they would be reviewing. Giving a bad review to one of their customers could be devastating, even if what was said in the review was true. Also in their tests they can't really test durability either because they just don't test them enough to be able to say "the edges peel off the skis after 3 weeks" (ala the troublemaker which they have given the award of best park and pipe ski for a couple years now).

The best way to do it is to just have a few people that know their shit put their 2 cents in, and let people see three or four reviews from a limited number of sources. Huge melting pot reviews are horribly innacurate because its impossible monitor them enough to find out when someone is giving an honest review or not.

The way i have been doing things is to first list the tech specs and tell how they shoudl perform. Then state problem spots that people have complained about in general. Then give my own personal review only of skis i have riden.
