It just hit me today that new school has become pretty lame. The cool aspect of the sport has been lost. I remember back in the day like 3 years ago when newschool was so new and exciting. Now it seems to be turning into snowboarding or skating. And after reading that post on the future of skiing i have decided to get out of the newschool scene and go back to real skiing. This fad is getting old.

Ok this is what is happning to newschoolers, it is getting bigger. More people form all diffrent sports are comeing and waching vids and posting on the site. I think is a good thing and a bad thing. The good part is that more people are starting to become free riders and support the diffrent compnies like Line and Armada. The bad part is that now more ass holes are comeing to the site and critzing what they cant do. As for the diffrent names from other sports the only other sport that skiing should use names form is inline. Grinds that come from skateing are used in skiing like front side, flast slide, front slide. Also the reson why this site also inclueds skateboaring and skateing is because the snow melts and thats what people do when they dont ski.

newschooling is not a fad. its a movement of skiiers who would like to see change in the old boring tight ass ways of traditional downhill skiing. dont EVER call newschool skiing a fad cuz your tottaly insulting the sport for what it is. its people like you that slow down the progression of the sport...salad tosser...

i just think that if people looked at more of the upcomers and enough of the pros/amazing amateurs that we could progress more... i see a vid of a kid tryin his first 3 and ppl are like 'gay'... i mean i just learned my first 3 this year and im pumped... i hate to see ppl just hate because they are better, it will push the sport nowhere!

Unfotrunily ghettoprep is right there are alot of people that do this cuse its 'cool' and a fad. I skated skateing when everyone was and now im one of the only people that skates im my town, thats what is going to happen to skiing the true skiiers will keep going even thoguh everyone else has left.

i dont think you could really say that skiing has 'sold out.' A sport cant grow if its like an 'underground' type deal. If Line, Armada, and 4front were the only companies making skiis right now the sport would not be pushing as far as it has today. Rider owned companies are awesome and they represent the core of the sport but what they dont do is put enough money into the industry for it to expand. Companies like the ones listed above are barely makin by. Line is the prime example, look what they have done. They make thier first bindings. It fails TERRIBLY, all sorts of problems. They probabaly lost so much money last season on those bindings. Since they dont have a major line of carving skiis to sell, they have to rely on twin tip sales, which isnt so large in this day and age. Companies like Rossi, Salomon, Dynastar, Atomic, Head etc. do have major lines of skiis to back up thier twin tips, This puts money into the industry and expands it for the better. The money making companies are the ones supporting our sport financially. and in this world money is everything. The major companies get our sport out there to the genral public even if it only is for the numbers. So what if it takes a whole line of womens carving skiis for a company to put effort into a decent twin, let it be. Skiing has not sold out, the only part of skiing that has sold out would be Mosely, and i dont even wanna start about that guy... Anyways, skiing has not sold out, its just doin what its gotta do to get to the next level. Skiing is never gonna be 'core' or 'underground' or 'non-mainstream,' no matter how much you want it to be. Just let the companies make thier cash so they can bring us a better product and dont label them sellouts for doing so.

That was such a long post, lots of rambling, i apologize to whoever just wasted thier time reading it.

I just realized something. In a lot of sports now, competitions are just a big publicity stunt. People like Tony hawk and Dave Mirra, people that have games and movies made after them, that appear in commercials, these are the people that will always have an advantage in competitions no matter what. Im not saying that Tony hawk cant skate, or Dave Mirra cant bike, because everyone know that they can. Its just that a lot of times, other people put up a huge effort, and may have the sicker run, but the big names will usually get just as high of, or a even higher score, just becausethey are, well, big names. Take the summer x-games, for example. The majority of kida watching that on TV are between the ages 8-14, or somewhere around there. Who do you think that they'll be routing for to win? Someone that they've heard of, and the people that have video games and commercials are the people that they will have probably heard of the most.

Right now, I dont think newschool skiing has achieved this status, and thats because not very people have heard of it yet. However, if skiing becomes what some people in this thread predict it will, I think we will start to see things like this start to happen. What do you think would happen if they made a game like 'Tanner Hall's Pro Freeskier', and it was a halfway decent game? The general public would start recognizing the names Tanner Hall, and start routing for him at comps, and what the public wants, it gets. Espn and other major sports netowrks would make more money if Tanner won, then if someone no one has ever heard of did.

So anyways, that was an even longer and more boring thread then the one above me, but if you read it, I think you will understand what Im trying to say, andlets hope that skiing doesnt get like this.

newschool skiing has plenty of room to grow, and we are responsible for molding it and planting seeds to make it bigger and better.

If it dies down like you guys predict then that is because we, the riders, the companies, and everyone else involved have let it become so.

If you want to see it grow then help out in everway you can.

Encourage the young jibbers and contribute as much as you can, keep places like ns.com alive.

This is just one small step we could take, but small things can plant the seeds

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

 
What applies for NS applies for the skiing populace in general. Right around the time when NS started gaining all the 13 year old newbs is when skiing started gaining all the little shits who do nothing but cause trouble.

Seeing all the posts which are like 'Sn0Wbo4rd1nG SUCKS!!!11' and 'Racing SUX LOLOL NEWSCHOOL 4 LiFe' and people in general talking shit about other sports makes me (and I'm sure others)realize how gay the community has become. You're no better than the 'mainstream' snowboarders who do nothing but rip on skiing. The infusion of 13 year old punk asses may to some be some kind of 'Injection of youth' into the sport of skiing, or 'progression' or 'the growth of a sport' but I say that its like a virus which is going to cause the sport to stagnate. As soon as it became the cool thing for kids to do, as soon as elementary school kids started bragging about how cool their new Scratches or 1080s or whatever are, and other shits started picking them up. As soon as the MOTHERS of kids started picking up 1080's and such. The sport started to stagnate. Money going into a sport can be a good thing, but its also a bad thing. A sport that has no money in it is sure only to have people who love the sport doing it. People who actually care. As soon as money shows up, it destroys any 'core'ness of the sport. The family ties that run the sport and the people in it, the whole struggling to survive mentality which makes the sport so damn cool. I love skiing more than anything, I've just been driven away from it so much lately because of the community nowadays. The whole mentality is to become the best, its no longer to have fun with your friends and help them progress. There used to be a specialness to when you saw someone else with skis throwing down in the park. Now its common place. Now most (and yeah MOST) kids are turning into pretentious assholes. The kids being complete dicks who think they are the shit and the veterans becoming driven away by the kids into seclusion, staying with their own groups. Half the kids who busted up ghettoprep here for his post are like 13 years old (as evidanced by previous posts and their grammar and manner of speech) and are the whole new wave deal. The guys OBSESSED with progression and becoming the best. I for one agree with ghettoprep, so FUCK OFF kids.

one thing i really have to agree with is the apparent arrogance in the sport. i'm sure that nearly every skier on here has been made fun of or ridiculed by snowboarders, and so what. after all it takes two to tango or something like that. i think a little more attention to ourselves and less about what everyone else is doing/wearing/thinking would be a great help.

i'm sure i'll get a lot of crap for this post, mostly because a lot of you people won't understand half the words i used, so to you, i'm sorry.

Nobody has any expectations whatsoever of me. But like andy said about tony hawk and mirra, when the well known athletes get nationwide recognition i feel that the sport has lost what had made ot special for me. This is just my opinion so there is really no point to argue.

I'm totally with andy on this one. every day it seems i see a group of little bastards who just had their parents buy them twintips cuz it's all of a sudden the cool thing to do. These little spoiled brats then proceed to talk shit to everyone who is slightly worse than them, including yelling 'you suck poser' and 'go the fuck home' to kids hitting jumps for the first time. These kids don't understand that skiing (whether it be new- or old-school) is something that should be enjoyed for its pure fun and beauty, and bringing people down when they are trying to have a fun time. They also have seemed to immediately forgotten about the first time THEY went off a jump--they probably looked like a big retard too. I don't care how stupid you look, if you are trying and having a fun time doing it you get my respect. i have been skiing for almost 20 years, and the first time i was allowed to go in the park without a hundred snowboarders chasing me out was the day i knew that skiing was the funnest thing in the world. it's too bad (most) little kids dont realize this until they've talked shit to half the skiers (and boarders) on the mountain.

i agree, i think that it takes a special moment to make u see that skiing is something u love or something u dislike, i agree that the kids out there just doin this cause they wanna look cool and yellin obseen things out are just bein big tools. if u wanna progress don't be in a rush, it'll all come in time, and it'll be more satisfing to just enjoy it for u and only u, i admit that sometimes i get swept away in the fads but skiing seems to be one of the few things that people really aren't gettin into around where i ski. i think that it's gonna get really popular soon and after a few years it'll die down and then true legends will be born.

i stopped reading all this half way down because i have add and a short atension span, but anyway i think people should stop worring about all this shit like whos a sell out or stuff like that, skiing for the most part is skiing and as long as their are people that are skiing for themselves and not worried about if its cool or not the sport will still have the same stoke or whatever it had a few years ago, but anyway i'm just rambaling now and what I'm pretty much just trying to say is stop worrying about stupid shit and just enjoy skiing and do what you want.

 
Do you know how many snowboarders there are @ my hill? tons, how many newschoolers? about 8..now you can't seriously tell me it resembles a more popular sport like Snowboarding. Newschool is like someone else said, a movement of hardcore skiers that are steering the sport into something different. Selling out has its advantages and disadvantages...but who cares. I have fun knowing not only that it is fucking fun, but that i am the only one in my school that can do it.

Also, about the guy above w/ the Polish pride icon. Think about where you ski. Do you ski at a more well known resort or is it small. Of course at smaller resorts you'd have less skiers. 8 is so many more than there used to be a couple years back. I can remember it being a huge deal if you saw someone else throwing down on skis. Up at Okemo or Killy or whatever, there are always like 20+ kids on twins in the pipe/park.

Aughhh...I hate the fact that all these 7th graders at hood keep telling me that I'm a girl and that I can't ski. I mean, I can't do any impressive jumps, but I don't really give a shit what anybody else thinks cause I know that I'm having fun. The kids doing this are usually punk wanna-be's that got some twin tips for christmas because it was the 'cool thing to do'. I had to work to be able to buy my skis and I just have fun skiing the park and the rest of the mountain with my friends. I bet half of those kids couldn't ski the stuff I ski cause they're just stuck in the park all day worring about getting 'really good' so they can impress somebody. I'm sorry if this doesn't bring up any points, but it makes me sick to see these kids who think they're sooooo good just cause mommy and daddy bought them expensive skis. Then when I ask for help from one of them, they spit on me saying that I can't ski, when they've prolly never even seen a double black diamond trail cause they were too busy 'hanging in the park'. What the hell is it with these kids?

i think ghettoprep is right about skiing being a fad, as much as everyone hates to admit it. I bet those hotdoggers who started throwin twisters thought that would go on forever and progress. But in 20 years, we'll probably be making fun of 'newschooling' like we make fun of 'hotdogging now'
