What makes an edit a good edit?

a lot of things. good quality, good filming and editing, a good song that isn't overplayed (usually helps if it's good on first listen). i personally prefer edits under 2 minutes unless it's a pro edit or something.

Well first off, this song must be in it

Then your riders have to wear Super Duper big Tees and sweaters that go below your knees.

After that as its been said, just taps, nothing else

the final tip is to always afterbangs and throw gangsigns at the camera before and after a feature

That'll give you the best

There are a couple things.
1. Clips. You want to have good clips that are interesting and would actually capture the viewer's attention.
2. Song choice. Choose a song that isn't overused but fits your style. If you're doing a park edit, some genres are hiphop/dubstep/indie rock. Really it's personal preference, but don't put in anything stupid.
3. Editing. You should have a basic knowledge of editing before you attempt a ski edit. iMovie would work, but if you were to use something like After Effects or Sony Vegas you'd probably have a more interesting edit. Then again, these take some skill to use. Try to edit your clips into the song, so beats correspond to transitions, etc.
4. Actually be good at skiing... If you're just going to be doing 180s and straight airs, my personal opinion is that you shouldn't even bother but whatever floats your boat.
Hope this helped..

OP, you don't need this to make a good edit...

in fact I wouldn't bother trying to use it yet if you're not familiar with premiere or fcp, and photoshop

I did state that iMovie would do just fine; I implied that in order to make a very professional looking edit with amazing stuffz a program such as After Effects would come in very handy. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

Don't use too much slow motion, don't use a dubstep song, don't try and be thug, don't use a country song, don't use a song you've seen in an edit before, and don't forget to color correct.

I disagree.

It takes time to learn to both ski and edit. I see no reason not to practice the two things simultaneously.

I used to have the same opinion... But then I saw lots of kids make edits that recieved lots of hate, and many gave up. one guy even.switched to boarding

There are four things that you need to get right.

1) Editing. I'm a firm believer in keeping it simple. I like to use regular cuts timed with the beat of the song I'm using, maybe a crossfade when I can't match a cut with the beat. Only one or two fancier editing tricks per edit. For me, the B&E Show is a good example of terrible editing. The skiing is amazing but I hate watching the videos, because there's a cut almost every second and it just feels like the editor is trying to show off his Final Cut skills in every clip.

2) Skiing. You don't have to be the best skier out there. I like seeing creative tricks and I hate seeing repetition. No matter how good your mute 5's are, nobody wants to see ten of them.

3) Filming. Try to find good, interesting angles that still show the action. I hate the shots where the rider disappears behind the knuckle and I have no idea whether the trick was landed. Variation is the key here too. Even if your local park only has two good jumps that you use for filming, you can get many different shots out of them. Come up with a few angles for the jumps and maybe add some follow cam or POV and you've got some variation!

4) Song. In my opinion as long as the song isn't something I've seen in five edits already or super annoying in some way, you're good. If the editing flows well with the song, even better. I love everything about the Austin Torvinen season edit but goddamn that song grinds my gears. I have to watch it muted. This is the easiest mistake to avoid. Don't pick a terrible song. Please also consider whether we really need the 413985th gangsta rap edit.

General advice for filming and editing: especially if you don't really know what you're doing, KEEP IT SIMPLE. Complicated and fancy angles or editing tricks are easy to fuck up. Regular cuts and crossfades are hard to fuck up.

when it comes to edits even on like window movie maker and imovie you can change up colors dont over do it with cutting stuff but i must say cameras and views can be the make or break

just make it creative with a fun vibe. ex) gap into the side of landings, 3 over rails, get some shots of gapers going hard. It makes watching more enjoyable.
