What is time?

in physics today, whilst talking about heat, the subject of black holes came up. i forget the transition to get there, but anyways.

so we are talking about black holes, and then we discuss how time itself is bent by the black hole: if a guy were to jump into one, he would be dismembered, but on lookers wouldn't see him be torn apart: he would appear to be frozen.

in another discussion, a subject came up that if you were to put 2 perefectly synched clocks, one at sea level, the other 1 story higher, the clocks would synch out. (but im guessing that has to do with the clocks and gravity acting on the pendulum, not time itself).

also, i read somewheres that the astronauts of the apollo missions were a couple millionths of a second younger then other people on Earth.

so my question: what is time?

is it some sort of effect of gravity?

and where does einsteins relativity theory come in?

what does speed have to do with time?

like in the incredibles: the kid is super quick, and he puts a tack on the teachers chair faster than a blink of an eye, so does this mean that time is slower for him, so that he can see everything that he is doing at "normal speed", or does his brain interpret things quicker, slowing down time?

i'd really like to know.

also, our clocks time goes by faster when we are amused, so is time just an invention of the mind?

i think its fascinating...

bah, sounds like grade12 physics. i'm too tired, and exhausted to explain it (it's 6:00am here and i'm studying for exams) but do a google search on 'special relativity'. that should answer your questions.

it also explains how we can never reach light speed (according to einstein's theories) which is pretty interesting. and, if you send a dude to space with a watch synchronized to a watch on earth, he wouldn't be milliseconds younger, he'd be several minutes younger, depending on how fast he was travelling in space and for how long.

yeah, grade12 you do special relativity, learn all the equations and shit, but you can look into it now, its not that complicated.

but aren't they a hypothesis? like we can see affects that are supposed to be caused by em, but its just hypothesis?

yep. like einsteins theories. we don't know for sure, we just haven't proved them otherwise... yet.

time is somoething humans made up to count the days... what do you think all definitions come from? someone had to start the "rumor" also know as a word/definition to some object.

time is in a deeper sense, light.

if you travel faster than the speed of light you wil go backwards in time. or something like that, im only 15 so im not learning about this at the moment...

so, if you go faster, does time slow down for you then?

so say a race car that goes at 300 km per hour for a day, and a yugo at 50, will the race car driver be younger?

To answer your question nobody knows what time actualy is, we have theories, but nobody knows for sure. We know how to use it, ansd what it does but not what it is. The theory of relativity was that einstein thought that time its self had a viscosity. Like when you do smething really boring time seems to pass by slower, but when you are concetrating, time seems to pass by quick. Some o your questions just can be answered..............yet. Hope i helped.

a bit, yes. thank you. time is relative in that sense, when something is boring it goes by faster, and when you do something interesting it goes by quicker, and it changes from person to person...

but so what does gravity have to do with it?

- Patty

Well there is a connection between space time, but i don't now how this is or how to explain it. Well balck holes are so large that they affect the gravity of everything and all the planets around them. So i guess if you have a such a big effect of space then you must have an equal and opposite effect on time. I guess sort of like newton's third law....wait it is his third.... don't remember. That is just a guess.

time is just a manmade invention that is an indicator of the point of the earth in it's rotation.

when you were talking about clocks being influenced by gravity, that is right. the weight (in the pendulum swinging variety, such as a grandfather clock) acts as an energy storage device so that the clock can run for relatively long periods of time unattended. these clocks are windable, and when you wind these weight driven clocks, you pull on a cord that lifts the weight. this gives the weight potential energy in the earth's gravitational field.

Time is a construct of our minds, and therefor is what we precive it to be.

In the movie "waking life" they touch on this idea. They explain that infinity is an instant, its the present, but we dont want to accept that. We keep saying no to infinity and stay inside the construct that time passes. The moment we say yes to the infinity of existance is the moment that we die.

whats time? time is the amount of time it takes to move through space. space and time are the fabric of everything

EXACTLY!

it cant be defined without using time. this is thus proven that everything can be broken down into space and time. world as we know it wouldnt exist with either therefore they are the fabric of everything

You can't use time to explain time itself, try explain it with out useing the word time. Oh and what you explained was speed, not time.

hahaha, that is the trick isn't it, but it can't be done. People, including einstein have trying for thousands of years. And i hate to say this but for those who are annalysing time through people humanity' s interpretation, he wants it in a physics, scientific view. I am sorry but the films like the nes mentioned are all phylosophical, and not scienctific. So let stay on subject shall we.

well, so far, its either a human invention by our bored brains to keep track of stuff, or its directly influenced by speed and gravity on ones self.

which leads to another question: our time is related to the earths speed right? so if the earth moved faster, then we would live longer, because we would be younger longer? and if the gravity were less strong, then would we have a longer life span too?

- Patty

*NS Skateboarders* Vas y il l'a cassé!

Sorry, if nly it worked that way, actually how long we live is determined by how long our cell can keep reproducing, and other factors like that. The length of our life is affected by biology, not gravity.

Matman10: Man lat you had that 7 down but you binder poped off

Laterails:Yeah i think they aren't adjusted, or it could be the fact that all that is holding them together is one of my pubes

but is our biology affected by the gravity on earth? our biology is affected when in weightlessness, like lower bone density etc., so why should that be any different?

- Patty

*NS Skateboarders* Vas y il l'a cassé!

No because grvity does not affect our cells, and the way they divide. they years would be alot longer though, and that would be about it. Theorticly it would not do anything to us in life wise, but who knows. this part of physics is very thouch and feel, if you know what i mean.

read "The Fabric of The Cosmos" and "The Elegant Universe". Both are by Brian Greene. It talks basically about everything that has to do with quantum physics, all the different theories and explains them. He explains them pretty simply so you dont need that much background knowledge.
