What is the point of hockey stop on jump lips

I get it’s a speed check thing but what are you looking for? Is it like if you start the hockey stop midway up jump and finish the stop at takeoff of jump then that’s the speed?

it's just to get a feel for the speed. if you're experienced enough with jumps the idea is that flying into the jump at speed can help give you a feel for whether or not you would have cleared it if you hadn't stopped

it ain't an exact science, that's for sure haha

I think it has to do with comfort, like oh shit I really am about to hit this jump let’s get a feel for the run in and what not. Definitely all mental and not actually a test of the speed

When you build a backcountry booter sometimes you have to build a steep or sketchy run in. If your bounced around too much or thrown off balance it can screw you when you get in the air. The speed check is to make sure the rider is comfortable and is able to get a good set up and pop when they hit the lip.

I always do the same sorta thing for mtb drops, just to picture myself going over the edge at the certain speed. It's definitely all a mental thing.

Even if you start slowing down before the transition starts, you can get a good idea how that transition and lip will feel at speed. It actually works pretty well.

Hockey stop on a lip on the east coast and get shanked. If you're not a hack you can do it on the knuckle. Accidentally did a blind 2 off a jump cause it was so icy.
