What is on the bottoms of skis?

at least one person is gonna say 'wax' so before they make a fool of themselves...it ain't wax...or ptex for that matter. I used to know when i worked at a shop a couple years ago..but now i have no clue.

hahah...if that's the case then i'm a fool. I was sure it was some other material that was more porous then ptex so the wax soaked in better. nevermind then.

it depends there is a few different qualities of shit, and yes i do actually know because i work in a factory.

its called base. p-tex is shit. If anyone lives in Calgary they should go to COP to get their skis tuned we got the new winterstager base gun, which replaces core shots with base material not Ptex. Your ski is as good as new.

 
yah, i was so sure it wasn't ptex. You use ptex to repair the base because you can light it and drip it into the holes, actual base can't do that.

i dont know what it is exactly, ptex is what you fix it with, but its not what bases are made of.

its a combination of plastics.

Don't those winterstager guns or whatever they're called cost a real lot? Like a few hundred at least. I'll stick to P-tex and live with a few rough bases.

you can get cheaper guns that take p tex sticks or you can get expensive guns that you can change tips on for like plastic welding a boot or p texing a base, and they don't use the big p tex sticks they use a lot smaller ribbon type stuff, andits a lot smoother base weld

the gun he is talking about is for core shots whenit goes all the way through to the metal core of a ski.

p tex wont stick to metal as u obviously know because it never sticks to your edges.

the gun runs just under 4 bills.

every company has a different name for the base material

there are 3 or 4 different types of bases and the main difference is how harfd they are twin tip skis are generally made from harder base materials and therefore dont absorb as much wax but do last longer do to the pounding they take.

the gun is not p tex and and what comes out of the gun is not base material it is something else similar to p tex but a lot harder and thicker.

neither p tex or fcore shot stuff absorbs wax that well p tex absorbs way but the other stuff does not at all i have a spot on my skis where i used the gun and when waxing it you can tell it is not absorbing the wax.

Quick tip if you ever get a core shot where it goes down to the metal or wood stop skiing immediately because if water gets in there it make it really really hard to fix even with the gun and sometimes it cant be fixed it will just bubble.

i know cus i work in a shop and it took me a week of fine tunning to fix it on a ski that was skied on with a coire shot it kept bubbling.

i finally fixed it but with labor and the cost of a core shot which is between 40 and 80 bucks each this guy ended up paying like 160 to get his skis fixed.

the gun is 2100 american. It isn't just for core shots its for any fucked up base. Its super sick and don't stick to Ptex for the whole year you should go to your shop and get a complete tune once a year or so. the rest go with your ptex.

 
Sintered bases are much much better than extruded. I don't know of any ski manufacturers who are using extruded bases now.

extruded bases are only used on crappy beginner skis. everything else is sintered. there are several types of sintered though, some with graphite, all kinds of other stuff out there too.

burton uses some sick shit...go look at hteyre bases...maybe more snowboard companies do it too, but thye take diff pieces with diff graphics then just kinda fit them into like a jigsaw thing to make up the bases then they press it all together so yea...it makes the graphics stand out clearer and shit...way sick, do any ski manufacturers do this ?

Something that all ski companys should start concidering is doning a process like K@ is doing, im sure others out there are doing it to but right around the entire snowboard k2 cuts about a 1/2 inch of graphic all the way around off and more where needed and replaces it with a base matiriale that cpntains ceramic particles. they do this cause that part of the board or ski get the most friction and you get really bad edge burn. the ceramic particle base mixtire on the perimiter of the base holds the wax in alot more so you decrease in edge burn, and your board/boards ride alot faster and smoother, this also increase the internal structure of the board/boards. Some of my info may be a little off but im sure there some ski techs on this site that will be able to clatrify what im saying.
