What is America?

After reading the "I'm Ashamed to American" thread I started to wonder what most poeple on NS consider it to be American. to me it seems like alot of americans fall into two groups. one group says they are ashamed to be american, the other group belives logic does not apply to themm as they drive a massive truck they bought for the soul perpouse of being able to say " I love America, I do want, suck my balls and fuck you. for me being an American is summed up in events such as the race to the moon. america is all about hard work and talent paying off, to be the very best, and for everyone to have an equal oppurtunity to become the best. what event, saying, or idea does it for you guys?

To be honest I see America as a pretty shitty place but that is mainly due to Canadian media.

I see poverty in the south, ghettos all over the place, a massive obeisety problem, an illegal immigrant problem and you guys almost single handedly destroying the worlds economy.

I obvioulsy know that this is not all true but I feel like that is what a lot of the world may see you as.

after spending a year abroad in germany and having a german mother myself I completly see were you are coming from, and met alot of people who had these same ideas. I just think its interesting to know what americans think of themselves

the US seems to be the place to go if you want to prosper. if you're rich, have a private health plan, live in a good neighborhood, you're going to be very well off and probably very happy. on the flip-side of that, if you're poor, you're completely boned, as you'll have no health care, live in a crime-ridden zone, and are going to have a tough time clawing your way out. the mean is the same as it is anywhere else (small family, nice, cozy little home, 60k salary living in the burbs), but the extremes (rich vs poor) are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum, whereas most other places, if you're rich you're drowning in tax to help support the less fortunate, and if you're poor you really aren't in all that deep since you still have access to the same shit as anybody else.

america is all about hard work, perserverance and will.

i drive a big truvk because its practical for me. i have to workk hard for everything and dont take hand outs. and thats how it should be.

Americans have given up. This generation just doesn't want to be involved and they want the government to do everything for them. However, the US is one of the few countries actually contributing to the UN, even if it doesn't benefit us. We don't have much money, we seem to have no spending limit and the population seems to think cars make great status symbols, even if they can't afford the damn thing. America needs to wake up and start working again. Where did the pride go? The war starts and six years later everyone starts to think America sucks, they can't find a job, but they aren't willing to work certain jobs, so illegals end up taking their place. It's a sad world. If people began believing in America again, maybe we would be better. Bitching about who WE elected does us no good.

Some of its fucked but it doesnt really prevent me from doin what I want to do sooo its not too bad

America is a good time.

America is diverse.

I could travel the states all my life and never get bored, so much to see and do.

and finally America has the best skiing on the planet. Don't worry about what the media tells you, come down and see for yourself.

I think it's funny how Canada media covers what goes on in America because they don't have enough going on. When's the last time we saw something on the news about something occurring in Canada? Never. I think it's funny you have to rely on putting down other countries to make yours feel better about itself. I know America does it with many middle eastern countries, but to chose Americans news to put on television and in the papers, I honestly think that's a joke. Everyone hates on America all they want, but in the large scheme of things America is such a great place to live and anyone blind enough not to see that is undeserving of living in the country. We don't realize how great we have it.

lol at Canadas media

Nope that statement you made sucks.

I get the info that I stated in my above post from YOUR media. Like NBC and fox.

Also I straight up said that I know it is nt true, also when has any news network ever reported on a postive thing?

Obviously you don't watch the whole show. They report on all this negative shit, then close out with some little happy/cute story to make you feel better and forget about all the terrible shit.
IMO, America is an ideal, but it is flawed. The sad truth is though, that it is a shitty country, but it is way better than some others.
P.S.: Did you know america spends 3 times as much as Chile on health care but we still have the same life expectancy? Its true.

The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific.

At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2) and with over 310 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and the third largest both by land area and population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries.[7] The U.S. economy is the world's largest national economy, with an estimated 2009 GDP of $14.3 trillion (a quarter of nominal global GDP and a fifth of global GDP at purchasing power parity).[4][8]

Indigenous peoples of Asian origin have inhabited what is now the mainland United States for many thousands of years. This Native American population was greatly reduced by disease and warfare after European contact. The United States was founded by thirteen British colonies located along the Atlantic seaboard. On July 4, 1776, they issued the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed their right to self-determination and their establishment of a cooperative union. The rebellious states defeated the British Empire in the American Revolution, the first successful colonial war of independence.[9] The current United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787; its ratification the following year made the states part of a single republic with a strong central government. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten constitutional amendments guaranteeing many fundamental civil rights and freedoms, was ratified in 1791.

In the 19th century, the United States acquired land from France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Russia, and annexed the Republic of Texas and the Republic of Hawaii. Disputes between the agrarian South and industrial North over states' rights and the expansion of the institution of slavery provoked the American Civil War of the 1860s. The North's victory prevented a permanent split of the country and led to the end of legal slavery in the United States. By the 1870s, the national economy was the world's largest.[10] The Spanish–American War and World War I confirmed the country's status as a military power. It emerged from World War II as the first country with nuclear weapons and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union left the United States as the sole superpower. The country accounts for forty percent of global military spending and is a leading economic, political, and cultural force in the world.[11]

America is FREEDOM and freedom is power. You can also throw in bits about democracy and variety if it makes you feel any better. The United States of America is an amazing country and fuck any of you who say otherwise.

Well I'm dual Citizen, (AMERICAN-CANADIAN) so i can represent the american side right now. 5 days studying and doing labs and the other 2 i'm studying AND working catoring and for a pharmacy. I am also sitting in on a genetic engineering lab 3 days a week that's working on altering bacteria to make them produce things that help humanity.
I don't have a car, I ride my bike everywhere and am working on graduate school applications.
DONT tell me that Americans are lazy. Most are hard working, but some are fucking stupid and spend all their money on booze and forgetting self awareness as much as possible.

America is an awesome place to be. IMO after traveling a shit ton ive been to some pretty cool places, but i still cant think of one place id rather be than here.
the problem is just what the other guy said. Americans are giving up. we expect the government to wipe our ass constantly and are not willing to risk anything to gain success. not to be a dick, but Ameica is becoming like the rest of the world in that way. what used to set us apart was that we were a nation of people that worked their ass off to get what they want, any risks associated with almost complete freedom were completely worth it. people were willing to risk their lives to have freedom, now people risk freedom for anything that makes living easier. The whole idea of America was to have the smallest government possible and be run by the people. government should almost be the enemy, and fear the people, and it used to be that way somewhat, but it has made a complete 180 now.id say America really started to loose it around the 50's. and it really started becoming apparent in the 90's. people want to be told what to do, how to live, and be given money and oppertunities rather than working for it themselves.
here's a sad story, in my debate class a couple weeks ago, we had a discussion on freedom of speech. it was related to the westboro baptist church protests. the professor had us raise our hands to see who believed they should be able to say what they want, when they want and where they want and have no restrictions, and it was me and 2 other people who raised their hands. then 7-10 people raised their hands saying they shouldn't be able to do it at funeral's. and about 15-18 people raised their hands saying they shouldnt be able to say anything at all if its that offensive. thats how fucked we have become. maybe its just this generation, but the fact that the majority of the class was willing to give up freedom of speech, our first amendment to not get their feelings hurt is completely pathetic. one girl even made the comment that the 1st amendment was "stupid" luckily an ex marine in my class (one of the 2 others to raise their hands with me) basically murdered her with words, even called her a bitch. our teacher was smirking the whole time, it was awesome.
that being said. there are still awesome places in the US. you just never hear about them, obviously all the major cities suck ass, and everything you hear on the news is bad news because thats whats interesting. but if you really think America is a terrible place, i suggest you go to places like nebraska, middle of nowhere texas, colorado, utah, wyoming, montana, etc... even some better areas of the south. and you will meet some of the most interesting intelligent people ever. people who are basically living in the 50's still. where modern government and law's just dont apply to them. out of all the places ive visited across the world, the most interesting people ive met were in these happy little towns in America.
so yeah, America is still awesome, just dont expect to go to some shit pile part of LA and expect to see what America is all about.

America boiled down to fit my values:

Some of the best ski resorts in the world

Freedom to talk shit about anything and everything ever.

The opportunity to be whatever I want in life.

Tits, trucks, Coors Light and chewing tobacco. Even though I don't chew.

yeehaw?

Freedom is the same all over the world and it looks like this:
Credit-Suisse-1-KG-Gold-Bullion-Bar-999.9-Fine.gif

The more money you have the more freedom you have. And it's as true in Colombia as it is Colorado.

Where did I say every American is lazy? Living in Vermont, you probably don't see where I'm coming from. I live in central California, Fresno to be specific. While I live in the nice part of town and go to the nice school, it doesn't mean that I don't see the poverty south of me or not-so-good stats for my city. We have a high unemployment rate here in Fresno. Quick background info- Fresno is the world's breadbasket. We have tons of field jobs worked by illegal immigrants (guess what, they're real! They're not just a conspiracy created by the Southwest to gain federal money to "secure" our borders). Many of these impoverished, legal citizens, who are living off of welfare could easily be out picking fruit for minimum wage, but the labor is just too hard for them, so they just continue to live off of the people who do work hard in this country. To make matters worse, these illegals aren't even spending most of their money here, it's being sent back to Mexico to help their family. That is what I was getting at, am I enough of a dumbass to think everyone is lazy? No and I never said everyone was lazy.
