What is a good filming camera

I am planning on getting a camera. Looking at getting the canon t3i. Just wondering what you guys think. Nothing too expensive

Canon's T#i line is very outdated. Its cheap, but I dont think it will be worth buying. You'll want to upgrade buy next summer.

I would look at the Sony nex-6 and Panasonic gh2 or gh3 over a t2i

The t3i will be fine for just starting out. It's cheaper and allows you to do everything someone starting out will need.

I would look at the Nikon d5300 if you want something in the t3i range. It has better video quality and better photos

Canon t3i - $549 with 18-55mm

Not true 1080p HD

Nikon D5300 - $629 with 18-55mm

Better sensor than canon

Sony NEX 5r - $549 with 18-55mm

Better video quality and 1080p at 60fps.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=B0090QXG92&linkCode=as2&tag=tomantfilan05-20

The t3i will film videos that are fine for a beginner but it's not the best value for the money you are spending.

Why do you think the t3i is the best option?

An ARRI ALEXA mounted with Angenieux's Optimo 24-290 f/2.5 is what you want.

I agree the Alexa is amazing to shoot with. But you'll need a tripod for that beast. Handheld gets to be a little heavy for long takes

Wondering why you think the t#i line is outdated?

I'm only speaking about video. I do not shoot many photos.

The sensor was released around 2009 with the t1i and 7d and hasn't changed much since then. They have added a little faster processors but nothing too amazing. the only real upgrades from the t2i to the current t5i are flip out screen, touch screen, faster photo burst from 3.7fps to 5fps, slightly better auto focus.

nothing major has really changed since 2009 when almost every other camera company is making more advancements with DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

it also only shoots 8bit 4:2:0 at 40Mbps bitrate in h.264, a highly compressed video codec, so the footage doesn't hold up will for color correction or vfx work.

only has about 8 stops of dynamic range

you can't go above ISO 800 most of the time and get useable video, because of issues with noise.

it also clips the highlights pretty hard so you always have to expose for that.

To make it shoot quality video you need to hack it with magic lantern and use a custom 3rd party picture profile.

Canon essentially keeps releasing the same camera, they just change the model number and add a few small features like a fold out touch screen, or slightly better auto focus ( still garbage when compared to their competitors AF)

I don't see the point in buying a camera from 2009 when its almost 2015

its not a good long term camera investment.

if you want to go with an older camera the Panasonic GH2 or GH3 are better

I'd get a gh2 over a gh3 tbh..... I'm thinking about switching back soon

OConnor 120EXe Fluid Head - $20,045.00

Arri MB-20 Mattebox - $3,877.14

Still Arri doesn't allow just anyone to buy their Alexa's.
