What is a Coupe?

ok im not really a car person but I always thought that a coupe was a sporty car with 2 doors and a hard top.

but now there are some 4 doored coupes such as the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class CLS500 and others

so im confused. could any of you enlighten me on what makes a coupe and what makes a sedan since there are some 2 door sedans also.

 
why does it matter?and usually its just a smaller car thats not like a family car is a coupe and a sedan its like a larger 4 door that can easily fit 4 ppl

sedan

n 1: a car that is closed and that has front and rear seats and two or four doors

that's wierd t-man i just saw a commercial for that car and was wondering the same thing. I always though a coupe was two doors so a foor door coupe would just be a sedan wouldn't it?

I'm looking to buy a pair of Big Stix 8.0 if anyone knows a site or a store in the NY area that has them please message me.
 
well seing how all of you have the same definition as me im going to assume that its the shape of the car like its shaped like a 2 door car but they put some extra doors. thats the most logical thing I can think of

ya im pretty sure coupe is like a 2 door small ass car.

well a sedan is more of a 4 door midsized family car.

a sedan comfortaby seats four, whereas a coupe is more of a 2 + 2, where two sit comfortably and the other 2 are crammed in. idn. that might work

coup is the french word for a hit (like a punch) and Etat is the word for state (country) so a coup d'etat is a hit on the country in other words a revolution.

with older cars a coupe is a car with a roof... im not sure if it means the same with newer cars though
