What if...?

Yeah so I was lying bed last night, havin' a think while Cyclone Zoe blew overhead. You know the one that devastated the islands in the deep south Pacific (again) with 350+hm/h winds and stuff. I was thinking what if a the whole world, or a contenent or even just a large country was completley devasted by a massive natural disaster, say an earthquake or to stay on topic, a bigass cylcone? What if we lost electricity, lost the roads and powerlines and water mains and stuff. How would people survive? How would humanity carry on? I believe countries like New Zealand would be generally okay because we are a nation of people who work the land. The same is true of parts of the USA and Canada and of course other countries. But what of those people who live in a concrete metropolis all their lives? There are people in America who don't even know that apples grow on trees. They just see the finished product on a supermarket shelf. How are those people going to know about bartering for things they need or how to run down an animal and cook it up for dinner. I believe that modern day man has lost the ability to survive un-assisted and has come to rely far too much on 'things'. It would certainly be an interesting time.

I think for most people in that situation, natural instincts and the desperation for survival would serve them well. There would be enough people to know how to make a fire without matches, and enough people who know how to hunt game or pick berries and fruit that the human race would survive.

Don't think just jump.

yes, people learn by trial and error.. and in the situation you just described humans will adapt to there surroundings. While these people dont know how to hunt there food right now, they will learn to if such a situation comes.

right on the other end of the topic, aren't there still people in like brazill still hiding in the jungle coz they think the wars still going?

Lagwagon. Is it legal to marry a band?

hey phatt bitch do you know how to run down a squirrel and eat it or do you just run down sheep and slap on the velcro gloves and rip that shit. that is the only way you survive is with hitting that tight sheep ass. the world would not change if a cyclone came and devastated your country full of beastiality freaks.

AMA-RIP

ya man.. there would be such caos. many people would be flipping out, worrying that there was no longer television.. meanwhile, the people that really mean business would be out gathering the things that would enable them to survive.

hooray for intelligence!

(and as much as everybody would like to believe, all of us are not blessed with common sense, and the ability to think rationally.)

I think we would start mating like retarted monkeys and eat all of the food we have and use up all of out natural resources.

Oh waIt, we're already doing that

that is one reason why i believe in renewable, distributed energy. having centrally located power is much more susceptable to terrorism, power outages from downed lines...

it really pissed me off when i went to sunday river once on a 22' day and there was no power. i was thinking that if the area made their own power with windturbines on lift towers and peaks, and solar panel roofs on condos and lodges, i wouldn't have to worry as much.

DISTRIBUTED RENEWABLE, the way to go.

Well you'd only have about 10 days to learn from trial and error, you can't talk about adaption and evolution within a week coz you'll die of starvation. A shitload of people would perish. Weiner would be gone in the first 5 seconds or so as soon as he realised that if he was a cock like that in real life he'd have his face kicked in so hard he'd have to brush his teeth through his ass.

did you know NZ exports it's best 'perfect' apples to Japan where they are seperatly wrapped and boxed and sold in stores for about $5(NZ) each!!!

thats like $15 american for one apple!!!!!

when we here in NZ pay like $2 for a 10kg bag, of second grade apples which i grew up on and seem normal to me!

Lagwagon. Is it legal to marry a band?

What you talking about Nicky? NZ$5 is like 30 cents American, well (US$2.73) to be exact, and no it doesn't cost at all that much. I should know, I live on an orchard, have done my entire life and have eaten export quality fruit since forever, yeah, it's good, very tastey, no wonder I don't eat supermarket fruit, haha. And by the time it gets to Japan or Asia or the USA it's just the same as the crap in the store anyway.

I think that if that ever happened, I still wouldn't need to know that apples grew on trees. I would concentrate all my efforts on creating as much of one product as possible (lets say houses) and I would trade my houses for food and clothes and other things I need. The idea is that I could make 10 houses / month by concentrating all my effort on one task or I could make just 2 houses and 4kg of apples if I had to split my efforts and resources. Basic economics.

I agree with Coz that the irrational idiots will die off, but I still only really need minimal knowledge to survive, and by trade I can be better off than people who know how to do everything.

i've never met anyone that didnt know where apples came from. people were designed to survive and we could definately survive if a city came to a hault. red cross and such would kick it into over drive and (most) people would be fine. i'm sure some loonies might die, but to say americans arent that handy in survival is a pretty ignorant statement. the reason america is the strongest most influencial country in the world is because we are the most adept in survival. we have it all. we run it all. its called the american dream baby and everyone, even lamb lovers in new zealand, wishes they could have the same dream.

I think this is a redundant question. Look at Mexico, they are always hit with a hurrican or an earth-quake. Hell most of the time both. But yet the still prevail, well sorta. There still on the map and thats all that counts. Unlike that dirty counrty Iraq. They have 2 weeks and then.....

Hobojibber, the reason people in Mexico and down in the islands know how to fix themselves up and everything is because it happens all the time. The knowledge is passed on through experience and they know what to do.

Jay, you are right, but what percentage of the population knows what you do? How many people would try and make everything for themselves - which wouldn't be possible - and how many would go into a community/specialist trade situation where you would barter for what you needed.

And there are people who have completley lost their surivival instinct. I know people (oddly a couple of them are American, hmm, haha, but some of them are Kiwis too) who have no idea what-so-ever when the power goes out, let alone what happens when the world stops around them. I think that a lot more people than seems obvious have actually lost that basic survival instinct. We're lucky, coz most of us come from fortunate enough backgrounds to have the knowlegde. Think outside your square and look beyond into the lives of others and how everything is different.

SUPilot... I think you might have missed the point. We're not talking about the Red Cross saving anyone's asses... the discussion is over individual survival skills, not societal skills.

Tim, I think you're right... we'd all band together and fare the best we could, and the un-hardy and weak, if they weren't helped, would die. If there ever is a World War III, this is what life would be like afterwards... what's that quote? 'People in animal skins, grinding grain in the streets of a dead city...'

--Disgruntled and Nostalgic Crazed Posting Bro!--

That's exactly the way I see it Ethan. In that kind of situation the Red Cross and Civil Defence, etc, would not be able to do a thing. There management structure and resources would be in such a mess to render the services useless. The skills of individual members may help so they can help people around them but it all comes down to people. Be it going alone or forming a community environment. It would certainly result in a very very primative society again.

nah i dont think i missed any points...think about it. if individuals survive (individuals make up society) then society will survive. even without redcross etc....people could survive...survival is a part of human nature. even gay guys might survive. i'm sure most people would be okay...as soon as we pop out of the womb we aim to survive we just dont think about things like that cause we take things for granted.

SUpilot: sometimes when i'm reading your posts -> and let me reiterate SOMETIMES, i come across something you say, and i think.. well, maybe he just thinks differently than i do, so i guess i'll keep listening to what he's saying. then you go and make a statement like 'even gay guys might survive'..

making an inference supporting the thought that people of different sexual orientations are somehow inferior to the rest of us human beings only does one thing: make you look like a complete and utter fool.

your blowing this out of proportion...gay guys couldnt reproduce. i dont think it was an attack on sexual orientation as much as the statement of a fact.

'You never hear Newt Gingrich say: Now why dont these hos just back up off me. I mean let a player play'

Being able to reproduce doesn't make a single poop ounce of difference to whether you're going to survive or not. It doesn't matter! It matters if you're concerned about reproducing, not surviving. SUPilot, you really should think twice before you start typing.

surviving as a society over generations is dependant on the ability to reproduce...

'If there ever is a World War III, this is what life would be like afterwards...'

If you think that one day it will just be world war three and then it will end and there will be a bunch of people living your thinking is a little off. Assuming that nuclear weapons come into play, i doubt that very many people would survive the initial physical destruction, nevermind the radiation, etc. My point was that if two gay guys survive than society wouldnt be able to rebuild itself, because they couldnt reproduce. But beyond that, the world would be uninhabitable if widespread nuclear war occured...so this discussion has no point.

'You never hear Newt Gingrich say: Now why dont these hos just back up off me. I mean let a player play'

If there was world war 3, I would cover myself in tinfoil to deflect radiation. I would be the only person on the Earth (cause I'm soo smart) and there would be no lift lines.
