What if Freeskiing Could be a College Sport

Wow you're clearly read none of this buddy. I won USCSA collegiate nationals in slope this year. Stop acting like you're a genius and everyone else is retarded.

Also basically half of what you said is false. There is only one intercollegiate comp (nationals), you qualify though usasa, most teams don't have uniforms, and just a little nit pick, individuals get medals and teams get these engraved plates.

Skiing in college in USCSA is pretty sweet in my opinion, but I think that at least 80% of USCSA involved schools are college club sports. Not that that’s a bad thing, but equipment, travel costs, uniforms, scholarships etc... Are rarely going to be funded by the university or college and when it is, its probably from donors. But its important to note that it’s the school's fault for the lack of funding NOT USCSA's

What I see happening at my university (Washington State) and many others, is the need for college sports to generate money to succeed and continue to get funding from the school. At Football and Basketball games they can charge for tickets, concessions, beer. There are big sponsors, and lots of times the stadium is filled... They can use this money to upgrade equipment and facilities, pay for travel, scholarships etc.

I know it can get fucking real at the regional and national level, to the point where some people might want to watch the event. But with freestyle skiing you aren’t going to pull as big of crowds as football or basketball can.

The non-Regional/ non-national events like the qualifiers give off more of a beer league vibe that certainly doesn’t cater towards making money. But even if a substantial amount of money could be made at USCSA events its unlikely that the school would be getting even a percentage of it. It is much more likely that the host mountain would get a cut as well as those working the event.

I don’t think creating a NCAA freestyle skiing league will change anything because at the end of the day it’s the university’s and college’s that need to fund freestyle skiing teams and I don’t see that happening...

tldr:

competitive skiing at the college level is really cool, but will probably stay at the club level where it is now.

Thanks for the nice reply. USCSA is great. They put in a huge effort and the events are totally awesome, didn't mean to put them down at all if it came out that way.

Ok, Rugby is the same way for many schools but taken very seriously and widely accepted...

Little nitpicky bro hahaha

There's rugby in the states, then there's rugby outside of the states.

It's kind of like professional soccer.

Both at least make sense versus whatever the fuck cricket is. I've played it, I've watched it, I taught jonty rhodes kids how to ride park, and heckled him into taking some laps, and I still don't understand it for shit.

Haha yeah, believe me I want collegiate skiing to become a reality too, but realistically we are pretty far off... Maybe one day!

But until then I say enjoy what we have. You said you won USCSA slopestyle thats amazing dude, nice work!

Went pretty well for me, it just takes balance and commitment to getting your studies done while also having a great time. Just like anything extracurricular.

From my understanding (loosely based on conversations had whilst piss drunk) the main concept is to try try harder than the other team, grunt a lot, and "brotherhood" is everything man...

I know most NCAA sports require that you have the facility required for that specific sport on campus. For example, my school doesn't have a ice rink on campus so we cannot have a NCAA hockey team and instead we only have an ACHA team (club team) even though there is a rink that we co-own 5 mins away. Not sure how that would affect freeskiing.

Just more hate. It’s becoming comical. To think that if skiing was included in collegiate sports it would derail skiing altogether? Dude I need the shit ur smoking. Let me make this abundantly clear to you - there is no correlation to street edits and shit. There are just different skiers. Don’t be such a fucking wack ass hater cause some people want to expand the sport. Instead, do something productive and try and promote more of what you want to see out of the ski industry. Some closed minded ass people on here, either that or just stupid. You can’t help stupid.

Its not hate, dude was just speaking his opinion... And he made some good points. Some kids egos are big enough already, imagine them "on scholarship" for D1 freeskiing... No need to be a defensive dickface about it.

Like I said, there are some things you can't help... You're either a giant hypocrite or don't understand logic, but if you did the same could be said the same for my post (just sharing my "opinion"). Regardless, when someone starts their post with "Im may be one of those guys that thinks this is the worst fucking idea ever" I can reasonably assume that its just hate.

Did you read all of OP's post? Me saying "this is the worst fucking idea ever" is referencing OP's label of someone who would disagree with him. I disagree with him, simple as that. I would argue your response to me exuded more hate than my contribution to this conversation.

in any case, If you have little experience with the skate community, I cant blame you for not understanding my point.

Sheesh you guys are wearing me out... This will sound redundant, but... all you 'contributed' was a negative opinion, which in turn can be interpreted as hate.

Furthermore, if you read it, you would have read that someone will have some reason as to why it would be the 'worst idea', yet your contribution was, in short, full of nonsense. I do not need to take the time to break it down for you, and it certainly fell short of providing a valid reason as to why it would be a bad idea,

Skiing is bigger than you, and your poor attitude, so relax a little and stop criticizing everything for no VALID reason.

I think I see why we are disagreeing, and it has to do with how OP framed his question.

OP wants to have a "nice convo" about freeskiing being a college sport, however he labels anyone who may disagree with this concept as "wack".

By not leaving room for a disenting opinion, this "nice convo" really isn't an open conversation. Now I hope you are smart enough to admit that basic conversation can include an opposing opinion.

You are exemplifying fallacious reasoning by than labeling my response as hateful. By that standard, every time you think you have a good idea and someone disagrees they are being hateful? If you need a definition of hateful speech ill give you one, but start by looking at your response, because I guess i'm the "fucking wack ass hater".

I appreciate opposing opinions I just would like them to be stated in a civil manner. That's what I meant by nice convo. When I said NS has been wack lately I just mean people are being dicks to each other for no reason. I love skiing, you love skiing, we'd probably get along great if we skied together, but because we have opposing views on the possible direction of the sport, and tone and intent can't be discerned through text, we get into a full on fight.

I appreciate your opinion, we disagree, and thats fine

My man, like I said I am not going to spell shit out for u. At best, go back and re read your initial post on this thread. To keep it simple for you though, You’re close minded and arrogant with what you “expect/want” and can still claim to be a whack ass hater.

"and can still claim to be a whack ass hater"- Wait so I am claiming to be whack ass hater? When did that happen bruh you make no sense.

Tell me, is getting upset over any opinion that doesn't agree with yours a good representation of open mindedness?

we disagree, that is OK.

I actually tried exploring the idea and seeing if there was something I could do up here at MSU to get a team going and see if there was a way the NCAA would ever consider it as a legit sport. The biggest problem to the NCAA is that being an individual action sport, sponsorships are a huge problem. Under current terms, in any sport no player can be considered ‘professional’ and still have eligibility. Well many kids who would be candidates to be athletes already are making money using their sport, which by definition is professional. In the jist, it’s a huge headache to overcome because they would essentially have to break the rules and are concerned that it opens the door for other sports wanting the same treatment. I think it would be cool to see young kids who maybe give up because they aren’t quite good enough to go pro and maybe want to pursue an education while the improve. But until someone comes in from up high who has a passion to make freeskiing happen, no progress is gonna be made.

I realize this is an old post, but I'm wondering if recent changes to NCAA rules regarding endorsements remove this roadblock?

Bad idea

also skiing already is mainstream

best thing for skiing would probably to be kicked out of the xgames

This would defiantly make things easier. I've spent the past year building a free ride team at my school. From developing the club, getting funding, getting athletes, and coordinating competitions. If we actually had support and competitions from the schools that would make things run smoothly. I know bigger schools like CU Boulder have well established teams but they still run outside organization comps like IFSA and USASA. Having to get absences and tests moved for midweek comps also sucks. Our grade at the will of the Prof. and if they are nice enough to cooperate. And god damn would scholarship money be nice lol, comp prices and travel fees already drain the account.

As long as we agree it's just for entertainment and not determining a winner or loser then sure it's a sport.
