What has snowboarding taken from skiing?

I came in here on my annual voyage for X Games links and as a Snowboarder of 20 years, I couldn't help but get sucked into this thread and subsequently make an account.

All the snowboarders I know watch as much (if not more) skiing than snowboarding.

It's impossible not to, there is just so much more skiing out there. Big Mtn stuff especially. You've basically got Jeremey Jones and ten thousand skiers. And it's all equally good.

As for the original question...I guess almost everything. I mean skiing has like a few thousand year head start on snowboarding.

Bullshit. Either you have an incredibly small circle of friends who haven't been riding very long, or for whom it isn't their #1.

It's entirely possible to miss Skiing content completely, no matter how much of it there is.

It's called Social algorithms.

YouTube/Facebook/Insta, etc. are as likely to serve me up videos of Skiing as they are videos of Jamie Oliver fishing with Barack Obama in the Bahama's.

Between Insta, web edits, and full parts, there is an insane amount of creative content to keep us satisfied in our own little box.

Candide's viral shit gets a total pass. We dig it, he's the GOAT.

with the increasing number of splitboarders, the backcountry

Truth. Skinning on Ski's is infinitely better than any other method of uphill pedal powered transport. And we thank you for your service.

The question is what have both industries taken from Skateboarding and Surfing?

I can't speak for you lot, but don't forget the fact that Snowboarders were always Skaters to begin with, which is why almost trick is named exactly the same in both disciplines. Notable exceptions include our terrible use of the term Indy for frontside spins & Cabellerial for anything Switch Frontside.

Styleturns

Havin a giggle m8.

All older Snowboarders want to carve like Tom Curren, and the younger lot want to rip into turns like Dane Reynolds or John John. Don't even try....

It's 2018. He's allowed to be Bi. I want to see a Sean vs Jossi edit.

You're lying to reap Karma and everyone knows it. Stahp.

plenty of shit that skiers have done was before snowboarders, the whole idea of flatground tricks, some grabs and a good chunk of jump tricks aside from off axis stuff were done in the 70s.

Wtf. What grabs and flatland tricks specifically did you have in mind? Everything in those categories came from Skating.

Saga. But they can keep it.

No thanks, you can have it back.

Culturally, Snowboarders look to Skating for inspiration long before we look across the hill at you guys.

I don't know what's been going on with you lot but the last 5 years have been all about trendy adidas & dad cap fits that scream Magenta/Polar/Palace, etc. etc. as well as wallride to rail variations, tech nose & tailpress variations on big rails, and a general rewind away from quad corks and back to simple turns and sidehits at the local. Relatable shit that the wider populous can appreciate.

All my friends ski except for me and one other guy so its natural id be into skiing

plus look at my post history and you'll see I just bought a pair of skis and started skiing again

I think the main thing snowboarding has gotten from skiing is there is just SO MANY casual snowboarders that are basically ignorant to the industry and just watch whatever Audi ad Facebook tells them to watch. IDK if they got that from skiing, but it seems like there's more half ass snowboarders than half ass skiers these days.

One of the snowboarders who I ride with daily started using all skiing terms for tricks. And if we happen to all be working on a similar trick he'll adapt it to the snowboard. He also is a "lipb2 is the only trick in the world" guy. Probably just because our core crew is mostly skiers, but funny nonetheless.
