What happened to the dollar?

Ok here is a question. Three friends check into a hotel. The cost of the room is normally $30. They are suppose to get a discount on the room, but at the time of check in the lady at the desk does not know of the discount and charges them the full price. So each of the friends pays $10 to cover the cost of the room. Then later the front desk lady realizes the friends were right, and the cost of the room should have been only $25. So the lady gives a bellboy a $5 bill, and asks him to give it as a refund to the friends. On the way up to the room the bellboy decides that the $5 bill could not be divided up evenly by 3 people. He then takes the five and pockets it, but gives the friends back $1 each. Ok so here is the question, if the friends only paid $9 dollars each that equals $27. And the bellboy made $2, then the $27 + $2 only = $29. What happened to the other dollar?

 
They paid $10 each first, then the bellboy gave them back $1 each, and he keep $2, so they paid $9 each after getting back $1 each. 3X9=27 plus the $2 the bellboy kept only equals $29.

bell boy keeps $2 and returns 3$

3+ 2 = 5

the same amount of money exchanges is maintained at all times.

yes the multiplications don't add upbut thats coz each man has paid more than they should in the first place. (27 rather than 25)

It's just that it's told in a way that makes it sound like the number don't add up.

yea that is a dumb way to put it~

they gave her 30 once they never paid anythign again so she took 5 away making it 25 and the bellboy got 2 and 3 was divied among the friends no missing Kabling

i do see what you are saying though... if each boy spent 9 dollars (10 and got a dollar back) well multiply 3x9=27 plus the 2 dollars, i dont know why that doesnt work... but if you don't multiply it does

It is just a riddle, a play on words. If you say it the way its meant, then it doesnt add up. If you over think it then you lose the meaning. Its just to joke with people.
