What happened to skiing?

The guy/or girl doing the coolest ish is always going to get more props than the guy in the coolest ish, unless he's got both.

But I don't understand why there are so many people against baggy pants. I have been wearing my pants baggy since before M.C. brought out the Hammer and was busting out the ill. Theres no difference between wearing baggy pants because you think they are cool than wearing tight pants when you think they are cool. And part of park skiing is style; the way you move in the air and on the rails. I am not afraid to admit that when I am in the park, I am definately about my look. When I am skiing the trees, it's is pure and spiritual natural dope. And where I live there is always somewhere that has powder and is more fun than the park, so I am not in their too much.

"Ski Time", from 1983, is one of the illest ski movies ever. It's got a 117 ft. cliff drop at squaw valley. It's got Frank Bare doing a frontflip off a cliff and multiple 360's off rocks in the same run! He also was a stunt skiier for Aspen Extreme which also has one of the illest ski scenes ever. The realm was my favorite vid from the late 90's, early 2000s.

word to degenerates, first movie i ever bought and i still watch it to this day...

as for all time fav. probably 1999

If you let that kind of stuff affect you, your not a true skier. True skiers are all about the pure skiing, they don't ski for good looks or other people. They ski for themselves, their buddies, the mountain and the good time. Yea the market has changed and more people are getting into it, but face it, thats kind of what we wanted. More recognition....we have that now, and we have to deal with the up and commers and the new fashions and shit, just as any industry would have to deal. Just ski for the snow man, don't even focus on stuff that bothers you. As long as skiing is still around, Im happy.

haha i remember global storming... had vincent dorian as mini me for seth morrison it was funny. the first ski moive (besides warren miller) that i watched was "The Sick Sense" and that is an epic movie. if there are any young kids on here who haven't seen 13... im not mad, im just disapointed

the blue 1080s? i rode mine some this season just to fuck around, and they have at least 80-100 days on them now, and still ride beautifully

yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh same with me...first ski movie i have ever seen...i saw it and i was like waaaaaaaaaaaaaa

dude what r u talking about. oldschoolers was such a huck fest, it was like the racing mentality on twins. i say hooray to the new shit and put that cockroach style back in the closet with mogul skiing.

if anyone actually skies to be cool they're idiots, cuz no one else even gets what it is we do, so who is there to be cool too? they just like to look good when they are skiing and do shit with style, a pretty innevitable progression considering that style is one of the only things that you can keep changing/improving without really reaching many physical limits. the only thing i really disagree with is that people not landing shit all the time back in the day was cool. the super sketchyness of oldschool skiing is the thing that really annoys me about it, cuz anyone crazy enough can throw a lincoln loop or front flip off a cliff and land on their ass, or spin and flip around in the air untill they're too dizzy to land. I think the best progression that skiing has seen has definately been the high demands for clean and smooth tricks. even what we now called hucked 1440s and stuff these days are way smoother and more often stomped then the 7s and 10s of yesterday.

Honestly it is cool that new schooling is getting popular, but i like it better though when the snowboarders would try to kick us out of the park. When only a few people knew what was going down. When it was just you and your buds on the hill, no kids juding you by the gear your rocking.

in my mind, newschoolers has greatly sped up the elevolotion of nerwschool skiing....but NS never ruined anything, this site is the greatest website in the world

as far as old school dying out, i beleive that is incorrect

neon styles that were cool in oldschool yet still newschool skiing have came back

old school tricks are being thrown into newschool tricks such as shiftys(its really just a twister)

and as long as the kids out on the hill are just having fun skiing, newschool skiing will always be there

kids messing around will find new things that blow our minds and change styles,

i garuntee a double true nose was first down by some kid messing around with his buddies

just have fun cause cause thats what skiing is all about

sorry to say it, but fasion is pretty much why the whole industry works. Athletes get paid to where their sponsors gear, so that kids will see them in the movies and subcociously will automaticlly think that the gear is dope, and "cool". Without this "fashion" there would be no Profesionals (meaning, paid skiers), without pros there wouldn't be legit movie companies like Level 1, Poor Boys, Bigger Picture etc... Then ther would also be bc terrain, and big mountain etc... but parks wouldn't be as good due to the lacking money and investments in the industry. Stop whining about fashion, its here yes,you can't change it, and its good for the Industry, so stop bitching.......

The reason people ski is because it rivals sex as the funnest thing to do on earth. I don't know about all of you, but it makes me happy, and that's why I do it. Relax about the whole fashion thing. Its not hurting anybody. If anything it's attracting more people into the sport and is pumping more money into the economy of the ski industry. People still ski for the skiing; what they wear and how they ski should'nt bother you so stop bitching and whining already.

this is the first time ive seen you start a thread richie.

god i spend too much time on NS. especially for a kid from indianapolis.

i understand what you are saying, but i actually like where skiing is going. more interest is allowing me to meet and have things in common with kids. i just went to new jersey, and using NS, met up with and hung out with 2 kids from NS. i like the style, the colors and patterns armada is throwing out. i love new movies, like bermans stuff and OBVIOUSLY UP:1 and haha actually anything armada is cool, and they are pretty new to skiing. i like how freesking has this image and rep as a cool thing to do. i know it doesnt really make sense to say that, but i think its cool people now respect the sport. its just as free and fun as it was, you just have to remain uneffected by it all. dont let it get to you, everyones just out there having fun, just like you are. who cares if they need material satisfaction and to talk like they are the champs to get it? i just laugh them off.

skiings always going to be a huge part of my life, and my heart. i know i more or less had to abandon it when i moved here, but its one of my favorite things to do, and i love to be involved, no im proud to be involved and associated with it.

believe it or not, some kids rocked baggy saggy clothes before they were skiing.. if you are worrying about what other people are wearing on the slopes, please stop skiing now, and hold onto your 'glory days'.

i just ski cause i enjoy every moment of it, its like the moment that you never want to end ya know, but freeskiing is just another reason why i like skiing so much cause it lets me enjoy myself do anything i want at my pace, and as far as trends go, i do wear baggy stuff, but instead of being all serious and stuff, i just have fun with it, just like everyone else should, and happy dayz is a kickass movie, i still watch it all the time and such

I don't really have a problem with where skiing is going. I like it. THe industry right now is killin it, and there are more new start up companies than ever. Some will live, others will die. Skiing, just like any sport, will have it's phases, some good, some bad. I think i made this thread out of spite, and anger towards something I saw. i'm over it.

Chapter Three...Tahoe locals at their finest, too many to count, and NO ego or bs wanna be rockstar inros...just skiing

Thanks you constatine!

Before chapter three was Butter...even more lowdown local sick tahoe skiing...

Fun days when skiing was changing right before our eyes and EVERYONE was stoked...unlike now when attiude and percieved cool rules the typical park...deny it ALL you want but for those of us who helped seed the start of Newschool, it is painfully obvious how much the sport has changed...pros just aint the same and they act (for the most part, some are rad and deserve much props) like spoiled little rich kids...

This past early summer/late spring at Squaw we built a major feature for Tanner and co. Instead of given respect and thanks for the guys who made it happen, he (and many of his friends who were invited acted like little shits...

What happened to skiing?

Money, too much attention and self inflated egos...

true but that movie wasnt about much clothing style. its was a little but nothing like today.. i even herd jon olson is sponsord by soem fashion designer.

I

anybody ever watch the show, "Real action skiing" way back in the day. I used to tape that shit.

If we are gonna go back a bit, what about 'cosmic winter'. Anyone out there remember??? and propaganda was the shit!

any time the use of the word "core" becomes favored all extreme sports go to hell...and, if I'm not mistaken, skiing is still the most fun thing to do in the history of the world...so....who gives a shit if there are some douchebag 14 yr olds in the park who think they're better than you.

I

Skiing is still the thing i enjoy most in life, if other care more about gear then skiing, why should it affect me and the fun i have with skiing?

Sure skiing has changed but its still "core". people still go out and ski and get better at it because they love the sport. Unlike Snowboarding. Snowboarding is all about the hype. People think that snowboarding is where its at so the say "oh ya i snowboard and its way better than skiing". Most of the people i know have no idea about free skiing. they just picture the old racing style of skiing and automatically think skiing is a "gay" sport. Most of the "snowboarders" i know don't even have a passion for the sport and probly go 1 or 2 times per season. where as all the skiers i know go atleast 10 times per season because they love the sport, and its not all about looking cool. If it were i might just consider snowboarding.

^^^^^^ True in many ways including how people think you ski like a racer. Its pretty funny most of the girls and some of the guys at my school snowboard and the buy brand new boards and clothing just to go up and sit on their asses in the park and theirs whole groups of them thats exactly what pisses me off. They only go up like 2-6 times a season.

No way you droped the "core" bomb. Fuck being "core" who gives a fuck!?

So you're saying that you would rather watch movies where they don't land anything? And nothing has happened to skiing, except progression. Sure old ski movies are sweet to watch, but i think the "change" that has happened is good. And sense when have people skied to be cool? Last time i check skiing wasnt the "cool thing to do" that would be snowboarding. I kinda see what you're saying but you're not excepting change. Id say my fav old ski movies are happy dayz ski movie III and propoganda.

i'm basically just reiterating what many of you have already said... skiing is where it is today because of people being obsessed with having the new shit. if everyone was cool with rocking 3 year old pants with duct tape on them, then companies wouldn't make as much money. then companies wouldn't be able to pay to sponsor as many athletes or videos or other projects. without videos and promotion, not at many people would be in the sport. not as many people would be helping the sport progress. sure it's really annoying to constantly get shit for my pants not being baggy enough, or my goggles not being sagged enough, or my shirt not being a basketball jersey, but fuck it, that tenacity is what got skiing to where it is today. and i'll take it in exchange for better equipment, more company choices, and a better overall scene.

happy days was sick, i dont think skiing is really going in the wrong direction i just think snobby ass kids who get shit handed to them like new skis every year and new shit there rents pay for are becoming competive on who wears wat and looks the best. but thats not everyone

I see skiing as a creative outlet. everything from the clothes you where, how you ski, what you do, everything. i see it all as a bigger picture, and i love that people pay attention to that.

however, at the same time, skiing is an absolute blast, and by far the best part about skiing is the atmosphere, chillin with your bros, pushin yourself, and just bein outside.

way more core... dude who cares? Do you own thing and forget all those other people. I mean seriously... I didn't read though all of those comments, but dude thats life man. People are all into different things... clothing, skiing, biking, cars, climbing, reading, school, careers, etc... I mean whatever if someone is into the park, gates, backcountry, moguls, or whatever. Everyone is on the mountain to have a good time, if this means you want to have 'cool clothing' 'core equipment or clothing' or just don't care... Our sport is growing, so obviously its going to change, don't get caught up in all this shit its way to 'highschool' I guess if your still in highschool though you'll understand once you graduate...

honestly its just proggression look at skating every one of those fags wears tight pants and cuts themselves ha ha they just jumped the band wagon we need to be original stay true to ya heart and jah roots

"I!"

I'm also going to add that I'm probaby in the 10% of this website that has clothing more than 3 years old. Fashion is for girls with poor self-image, it's sad to see guys doing the same thing. Maybe the next trend in skiing will be puking your lunch off the lift or something. But anyways, I have an old copy of Subject 2 Change on VHS!!!!

who gives a shit...tight pants or baggy- skiing is the shit no matter what you wear...just as long as you dont race
