What happened to Big Boulder?

Rip everything Pat Morgan did, vail fucks everything up. That man should be our country’s president

I don’t know the details but something had to have happened once vail bought the hill. He put tons of effort into that hills marketing and terrain parks just to leave after 5 or 6 years. Maybe it’s a coincidence maybe it isn’t. Knowing Vail if something happened they made him sign a non disclosure agreement

Vail doesn’t really put emphasis into park marketing or social media. So that went away. And they for sure are scaling they place back. I’m sure that is one reason Pat got fired or he left before he got fired. Same story at most other Vail acquisitions.

Wait so has anyone been there since they've opened? I only used to make the 2 hour drive based off their social media posts and literally nothing else. wtf are they doing, Vail single-handedly screws up every park they get their greedy hands on and lose more and more customers' respect by the day as a result of it.

Somebody told me that the lift which services the main park there broke last summer, and that it was never fixed so now you have to hike 3 minutes across a hill to access the park.

Not sure on the specifics of the lift, but pretty sure Pat is at Mtn Creek now. I vaguely remember seeing something on the interwebs about that. Their social media presence, at least for "Big Boulder Park", was all his team.

pretty sure the freedom lift is fixed now. but it was broken all last winter

freedom lift got fixed but it was down today, kinda a bummer to hike to hit the top features of the only park there

jf's park was actually decent tho

looking at the map, and also considering past years, i think most of the mountain was a park. now it's literally the most inconvenient trail to access which is a park.

jf's park was so fun for a bit at the very beginning of 2021... now they've removed most features at top and the only sizeable jump they have has a knuckle-to-landing that becomes a platform of ice seemingly harder than concrete after ~2:30. I'm shit and I wouldn't talk trash otherwise, but injury after injury those afternoons...no one hit it for anything but straight air at that point and I barely knuckled (maybe two feet into the landing) and I felt actually sick in my stomach from the impact afterwards.

That would maybe explain their increased output on their insta about the parks, whatever it's called, rather than the main creek one. They at least seem pretty committed to the whole South as a park mountain thing again.

What's funny is on that insta somebody said something to the tune of "why don't you make some room for normal skiers on jumping jack too" and whoever runs it was basically like that's what the other two peaks are for.

Freedom actually looks pretty sick right now and it looks like love and the plaza are going to get features soon. So Vails changes arent to drastic just yet. Dont think boulder park is happening, at least not this year and it sucks that all of their lifts suck.

Can you lmk when Love and Plaza get features? Just chilling at home rn cause I'm tryna keep my family safe but I would drive up and quarantine a little after if some more parks were up and running.

I could let you know. There is Plaza...I had some chill fun there today

And freedom is open. Love has no features yet though :(

Vail really fucked up bb a bit and with blue mountain opening a full run tp on dream weaver I don’t see bb coming back for a bit.

Just wanted to bring this thread back. JFBB used to be great for park riding. A little one park in the morning and then shift over to Boulder for lunch and ride some of the biggest jumps on the east coast followed by some hot laps through freedom. I went there yesterday and it was a complete waste of time for park riding. They also changed the trail map, so it looks like no intention of bringing freedom back. Why the ehf do you need two dedicated beginner lifts. Bring back freedom. Also, the burrito bar at boulder is gone. Used to crush a burrito for lunch. So frustrating

ya buddy its real sad. i grew up going there what felt like every day of each season

Again, this is no surprise. Vail doesn’t do big parks.

And for Big Boulder it makes total financial sense. Freedom is a beginner hill. That’s money and people and learning.

That entire place should just have 1 park.

Nah that what Jack Frost is for

Big Boulders draw is city crowds weekends and college kids weeknights. The park crowd doesn’t spend money. Vail knows this.

I know it’s a kick in the balls for those who loved park skiing, but it’s what it is

Peak Resorts was loosing money like crazy overall. They were a horrible run company. Vail is also a horrible company but at least they can read a P&L sheet…
