What happened financially today?

title says it all, what happened today? Im at work in camp separated from society. I called my dad today just to catch up after 3 weeks working and he said he was busy and had to go and that he had lost a lot of money today

For the sixth week in succession, the US stock indexes closed on a negative note. Discouraging economic news and absence of any major corporate announcements dented the confidence of investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed below 12 thousand marks at 11,951.91, down 1.42 percent or 172.45 points. The Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. composite index was down 1.53 percent or 41.14 points to end at 2,643.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 1.40 percent or 18.02 points to finish the day at 1,270.98. Among other major indices, the New York Stock Exchange composite index lost 1.64 percent or 133.26 points to end at 8,016.39. The American Stock Exchange composite index closed at 2,319.27, down 1.37 percent or 32.14 points.
 
My dad was pumped for today because hes making some money back that he lost a lot of in FAZ. Direxion Financial Bear 3x
 
no shit eh? you buy stocks in an etf that shorts other stocks and the market goes down and you win!

why are you so amazed at the outcome? thats supposed to happen!!

and to the op, does your dad daytrade or something? not in it for the long haul? even if the market took a shit today if he bought in march of 09 when all the smart people jumped back in he would still be ahead.
 
I really know very little about the stock market, and very little about his and my moms personal finances, I just know that this was part of their retirement, RRSP`s. They lost a few years ago and were almost ahead again. Hes always been cautious with the market and the majority of his investments are in property so at least that is fine
