The 2002/03 Winter outlook includes:

Below-normal precipitation is expected in the Northwest including Washington, northeast Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, western parts of North Dakota, and northwest South Dakota. Precipitation is also expected to be below normal in the Ohio Valley states.

You dont think the filmers for MSP and TGR and the rest sit around for the storms to come...They are always there at the right place at the right time of the year because they rely on data.

Last time I experienced el nino, in 1999, I was at mt. washington. it dumped snow like crazy. we had a 950+ cm base. it broke the previous record from the year before of 545cm. So el nino = snow, and lots of it.

DREW - I'm sure you know what it means really and that it occurs as a result of a failure of the easterly trade winds which in a normal year drive the advection of warm surface waters and associated heat evaporation and precipitation laterally Westwards along just south of the equator in the pacific. The result in a normal year is a 'bulge' of water (a hydrostatic head) 120m high off the Eastern coast of Austrailia (a 30 story building). When the trades fail, this mass of warm water collapses and backed by the East coast of Australia, flows Eastwards in a large Kelvin wave where it meets the coast of Peru at Christmas. It is therefore associated with the coming of Christ the child hence the name El Nino. More importantly, once it reaches these normally dry climbs (due to the cold humboldt current and offshore upwelling off Peru) it bring moisture and rain. The warm water then spreads north and south in a Raleigh wave bringing storms and increased precipitation behind it

This means it should increase precipitation along the west coast and bring larger seasonal snow-falls.

As for the original question... Ehhh, it's all sketchy where I live. Eastern end of Lake Erie. Just a few cold weather weeks and boom, we could get like 200 inches of snow easy from Lake effect storms.

I heard this year is like, 1/10 of a normal el nino so it'll probably be the same as last year with a little more precipitation, so if it stays like -4 celsius all the time, there will be a LOT of snow (NorthCost BC that is). I saw some great pics of pow getting my seasons pass pic today in the ski hill office, it made me want to go skiing so bad... and aroused me at the same time.

Can you do anything about the weather? NO! is there any point getting all wound up about a forecast that may or may not pan out NO! So sit back relax and wait for snow. I am going to fernie regardless this season. I've never skied in the northern hemisphere anyway.
