What do you want to see in a ski movie?

Sup ns,

With summer in full swing I can't help but wonder how I can go about filming and editing my next film project (TBR fall 2022). The past decade has seen some impressive and really creative projects. The bunch, HG (RIP), LTC, Inspired Media, Zoot space, and Stept has been at the forefront of creativity and progressive video projects that, as well as other lesser known crews, has influenced myself to get behind the lens and do something different.

In my opinion, there seems to be a divide between those films and Level 1, PBP, Carnage, Forre, Strictly, Child Labor ect. This genre of ski movies portray skiing in it's best light, they are well edited, most of your favorite skiers, absolute insanity and style oriented. The truth is most of us have grown up on ski porn esque movies. I love both styles as most do, because I love freeskiing.

There are many factors that influence a great ski film/segment; music, sound, color, rider, spot selection, clothing, personality, and whatever antics revolve around the skier(s) in the film. The list goes on.

I guess my question is: what do you want to see, what can be done differently, and which movie style do you prefer?

Just to add. Every year I find myself gravitating more towards those that show greater perspective. Whether it be the environment they are skiing in, the people watching, the spot, the obscure and craziness you see when shooting, and the stories that go with it.

I agree, ski porn can be fun but I forget half the tricks I see. I’d rather see more “behind the scenes” style footage behind the clips because it makes the shot more interesting

In terms of web series and the like, such as LTC, I like when they take audience input from the comments, such as asking for funky tricks or new feature layouts.

this is a good topic. what do u mean that there's a divide between those films?

For me I think one of the most important things is being creative and avoiding things that have already been done too many times. Some common issues i have with videos are too much slomo, certain clips being too long, using songs that have already been used

I personally dislike the use of gopros and drones

I honestly think watching pow skiing is super boring. Most “films” I watch include pow skiing, and although I bet that shit is fun, I always skip to the next part. Even booter clips get a little redundant and boring to watch too. Using it as b roll is fine but if there’s a 4 minute segment of pow skiing there is a 100% chance I’m just skipping it, even when i rewatch videos.

Honestly I think that's fair. the type of skiing that I like most is what I can somewhat relate to. when I see clips of people heli skiing or riding sleds I can't really relate at all regardless of how fun it looks or how heavy the tricks are. Stuff like the last Carnage video is sick undoubtedly, but street videos will always be what I give most of my attention to

We need more resort segments with natty features on non pow days. Skiing for the everyman. Urban edits are great because things aren't perfect and they make do with what they got, but 99.69420% of skiers dont hit urban either

Ski porn park edits with perfectly manicured park features and the same jumpline over and over and over is just as boring as watching certain movies that involve titty deep pow slashes just outside of jackson hole mountain resort™

I tend to agree but style is a big seperator imo, I could watch someone like Duncan adams, Pwhite, or delorme ski pow all day, LSM and mango too because they have such a unique take on it. Lot of other pow skiers have such a meh turning style tho, almost makes powder look less fun than it is

Its a crime that Stricly's films don't even hit 20k views. Their shit is easily better than anything the big producers have put out in the last 10 years.

MSP has catered toward boomers for a long time now but "Return to Sender" was actually pretty damn good. It still has the usual cook cutter bs like obviously scripted conversations and a fucking narrator for some reason. NS might shit on me but fuck em its worth your time

Yep this is the answer. I want to watch people skiing the places I ski, in the way I try and ski it, but 100x better. I'm literally never skiing steep, bottomless, blower backcountry pow because avy conditions in CO allow it once every century. Never hitting the xl jump lines and throwing dubs cause I suck. Just gimme the crew going mach1 down the pally doing ridiculous shit on features I look at and decide are too big and then grilling in the parking lot once its all said and done.

Their most recent film Bermuda currently has 125,000+ views on NS

I don`t really have a ski resort here and pretty much only go skiing when there are decent powder conditions so im mostly inspired by the "freeride" segments, i guess everyone prefers what they can relate to given where they live

Atmosphere. Not that the skiing is bad in movies from teams like MSP, TGR, etc., its just the seriously over-the-top hardo vibes and typical ski movie cliches that kill it for me. No disrespect to the riders, filmers, editors, producers, etc. at all, It's just I thought I'd never see the company that made classics like Ski Movie I/II/III turn into some WME-type generic stuff thats boring. And yeah ski movies need to bring back awesome intros.

Honestly would like to see more movies like North Country, Motherload, Solving for Z, where they tell amazing stories about skiing. Different perspectives from all over the place from fellow skiers would be really interesting to see.

a lot of people like to hate on ski porn style videos that are just skiing and music, but then zootspace drops a movie that's literally just bangers for half an hour straight and people love it.

I'm here to watch skiing

I want a mix of serious and down to earth from a full length film. There's some stuff that's absolutely gnarly that deserves the 'serious' take, cause I think we've all felt that way when we land something new, or ski a new line. Stuff like Tanner's triple back to stomp in Here after, or Ahmet's switch 5 in partly cloudy, that deserves a serious thing. At the same time, seeing clips of the B-roll reminds us that these guys are human. Except Candide, he is not really human and is just a perfect ski machine.

More behind the scenes / hearing riders talk and interact with eachother outside of skiing.

like in is there time for matching socks we got to see the team interact at spots more and actually speak. Would want to see more random clips though, like talking at a gas station or around a fire, the car ride up to the mountain. Idk.

I like the hijinx stuff to be included too, which zootspace did… but I think cutting the clips so fast and it just being table breaking was too try hard. Like more context for the hijinx would make it actually entertaining.

Oh and all of the artsy Wes Anderson-ish shots in is there time for matching socks were phenomenal. More of those definitely.

for everyone that just wants strictly only ski clips….chill. it’s too creative/artistic of a sport to demand only stacked clips back to back to back to back.

Candide’s b roll = everyone else’s bangers

More non-pow resort segments, it can be hard to capture hard charging to look nearly as good as it looks in person. A good resort segment always gets me hyped tho
