What do you think: skiing and riding

What's your take on skiers and riders and people choosing between the two sports?

Here's my take (beware, I'm an attempted writer, so it's sort of equivalent to thinking out loud)

:-)

Let's face it: the sport of skiing is overrun by dorks. At the same time,

snowboarding is now being presented in the media as a cool extreme sport.

Now what annoys me is that all those media-hypnotized people out there are

immediately choosing to snowboard. I'm a rider myself, but it drives me crazy

when I meet people who snowboard just because they think it's the cool thing to

do. If you're going to be out on a mountain, you've got only a few choices: skiing

or snowboarding. There are more and more great skiers out there--especially

with the newschoolers bringing a better sense of style to the scene. And this is

the point: I wish the average Joe Cool would stop writing-off skiing just because

they're ignorant. I was a skier before I switched to riding--skiing was never my thing,

I tried riding and loved it. I didn't start snowboarding because I wanted to tell my

friends I did something fashionable on the weekends. I ride because I

love being on the mountain and I am very dedicated to the sport. For people to scoff at skiing and choose snowboarding

just because it's supposed to be cool, is just plain stupid. That's my take. What do you guys think?

 
i hear that all the time, people going out to the mountain for the first time and i ask them what they are doing skiing or snowboarding, and they allways say boarding, if i ask them why they go off how skiing is for dorks and old people and how snowboarding is so cool, even before they have tried either of them

snowboarding is also easier to learn. that is why some people try snowboarding first too.

yeah, snowboarding is way easier to learn, it takes like 3 days to teach. that may be why alot of people who have never done either choose it, or just bc of the image. there is just alot more effort u need to put into skiing to actually be a good skier... its fine wit me if those guys pick snowboarding over skiing - gives the real boarders shit to deal wit and keeps the yahoo skiers off the mountain...

 
i dont know about u guys..but i find boarding a lot harder... skiing i guess just came naturally...it was never hard to ride from point A to point B .. but its hard for my to do that on a board...hmmm

I ski with more riders than skiers. I respect their choice to ride. They do what they love and push hard to progress. They respect me and the other skiers I ski with for the same reason. I guess what I am trying to say is it does not matter if you ride or ski as long as you are doing what you love to do. I don't respect people who ski or snowboard just because they think it is the cool thing to do.

 
you cant say that snowboarding is easier to learn then skiing because that debate has been going on for so long that its not funny. its just a matter of the persons preferance

well, if you take a person and put them on a snowboard for the first time, in three days they will be decent. but if you take that same person and put them on skis for the frist time, more than likely they will be better at snowboarding then skiing for those first 3 days. of course that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

My friend asked me if i wanted to lay out or go water skiing, and thats when i realized that i dint want to answer this question and or any other aquatic sports question and i didn't want to see any of these people again. Next thing I new I went nuts.

 
If my girlfriend was a snowboarder i dunno what would happen. My girlfriend recently told me to shove my skis up my ass. That could be a bad thing.

 
I know alot of people who snowboard just so they can call themselves a 'snowboarder' and brag about how cool they are, It's really lame. It's funny though cause I talk with alot of good snowboarders and they always say that they respect the skiers that can do shit and can actually ski. Fuck, if I was a snowboarder I would probably think that the majority of skiing is gay, fuck I am a skier and think that there is ALOT of gay fucking shit in skiing. Even looking through a magazine like FREEZE, there is a lot of stupid, gay shit in there, but same as Transworld on the snowboarder side. Theres too many damn companies that stick a picture of some lame ass mute grab in an add and then think they are 'newschool' and with the movement and all that shit. Just looking at some of the gayness that gets put in ski mags, it's embarrasing to the sport. And what about all the doctors and phsyciatrists that like to go skiing, shit if I was a snowboarder looking at most skiers on the hill, like the the bitchy moms yelling at thier kids and ther stuck up businesmen, I would be like 'Fuck, skiing is gay'. There really only is a very small amount of coolness in skiing and that is why many snowboards, who dont see it, think skiing is queer.

 
most of the snowboarders who are any good do respect skiing, it's the gay little posers who talk shit.

I remember my first day boarding, there was about a foot of cascade 'powder' if ya wanna call it that, and my friend who boards was like 'hey, i'll try skiing if you try boarding' so i agreed. we left the ski school lodge and headed down to the silver fir chair. i fell a few times, but at least i made it down to the chair. we got to the top and he wanted to take inspiration (a black diamond) being the crazy focker that i am, i agreed. there are these big rocks about half way down that late in the season make about 7 foot drops, and it was powder, so i just had to drop em, of course i landed and rolled a few times, but the point is, snowboarding is hella fun, it's also pretty easy.

the basics of skiing take alot longer to pick up for the average joe, plus newbie skiers look way more retarded so its probably a turn off. they dont know what there missing though.
