What do you think of my live show coverage.

im starting a blog soon featuring my videos and a photographer. A big part of the blog is covering events and creating exposure for our productions and the events.

Here is the first installment of a festival we are covering. I have 3 more shows to cover so I would like to know what you guys think.

It was only possible to have 1 camera so I tried to make it more interesting by filming the crowd a bit and adding slow motion. The sound quality is not great, this should be fixed starting tonight.

thanks for your feedback guys!

personally, I would like to see more coverage of the event itself, instead of just one song with similar angles cutting back and forth. It just got a little repetitive and since I wasn't learning anything new with the shots and I have heard that song so many times, I got a little bored (IMO).

I do a decent amount of event coverage and it's definitely hard work, especially with one camera. My advice would be to show up to the venue at least an hour early and film a bunch of prep: b-roll of getting food, drinks, getting their tickets checked etc. Basically, give a bigger picture of the event. Hope this makes sense. I mean the quality of the footage is great and what you have here works, but to improve there just needs to be more variety.

Hope this helps.

Here's a couple examples of same-night edits we have done for events (pretty similar formats)-

Your videos looked amazing man, definately shows its a niche you have developped.

This video was not planned at all, it was really just a last second decision to include it in our coverage because we didnt get to book an interview with their agent.

The problem with this gig is that its full of restrictions and I want to knock the videos out quick. I'm doing 4 or 5 of them and they all need to be out the next day. I have no access to the stage, the front of the stage is only accessable for 2 songs then we have to be in a small corridor towards the stage so no angle possibilities. Its also not possible for me to have a second camera because of limited passes.

Im trying to find a formula that is quick and high quality with the restrictions I have. For today, since I have an interview with the band, I think I will have a tiny intro ( people arriving) interview mixed in with live performance and crowd shots, different angles. should be nicer.

thanks man!

oh wow, so you're really limited to what footage you can get. hmm...well, being able to have an interview with the band will be really helpful. what lenses do you have/what are you shooting with?

If you can shoot the crowd from the corridor, just focus on the band for those two songs that you have access to the front of the stage: shoot the song you're going to use as the soundtrack like you did with this one, then for the second song, focus on details of the band like their feet moving around, hands on the mic (close up details) etc

Then get all your b-roll of the crowd afterwards? definitely a tough situation...

Yah thats going to be the plan for tonight. I think I will shoot a little intro of people arriving. Then I will focus on the stage smooth and safe for the first 2 songs. after that Im going to get one song from far and then focus on the crowd and some nice close ups of the band members. mix all of that up with the interview and Im done.

Im going to shoot with a 35 1.4 and just a 18-200 for the show since it gives me flexability with all the restrictions I have.

here is yesterdays video. I ended up having horrible sound so I went with a different format, its a little long if you dont speak french so its not a problem if you skip over it a bit.

This is one of the biggest bands in Quebec and they are huge in france. I got to have an interview with them and mixed it up with some shots of the show.

sorry, just saw this post^ nice work man! I think for what you were working with and the format of this video vs the other, it looks great. I bet they were really happy with it!
