What do you guys think of this?

Bullshit...It's not the fucking truth...it's theories based on a census of the past few years. There is no way we can compensate facts demonstrating the cause of the recent climate change "global warming"

Now I am not by any means denying the fact that humans have an effect on the planet, because we do. It is very obvious that human activity has caused harm to the planet, BUT I don't believe the severity shown in this video has come from human activity alone. The earth has been around for billions and billions of years. There is no possible way of telling the weather patterns accurately of anything past 1,500 years MAXIMUM. Think about 1,500 out of a possible 5-6 billion. That's like comparing a high school to that of the outside world. Al Gore is a meathead. I think it's great he is trying to help clean up our planet, but he isn't approaching it the right way. Scaring people into changing the way we want to live is not the way to approach an issue such as this. I can only hope the people of America are not flocked like a herd of sheep off of a cliff like people such as Joseph McCarthy and Michael Moore have done in the past. Cleaning up the environment is a great thing to partake in, but being lead by elaborated truthful foundations is not the way to change human behavior and societies.

just debated this topic in english, during the middle ages there was a time of great prosperity that has been lnked to the earth being warmer and therefore allowing crops to grow better and have more grown. Also later in the middle ages a period of economic decline was seen and linked to the earth being colder than normal. The earth goes in cycles, it warms and then cools. The most polluting thing on earth is a volcanoe and it is natural.

Fucking word. Heating trends are naturual for the planet. Scaring people to be clean wont do it. Why? Because its all OVER EXPRESS problems. Sure, there are problems. But, they are not as big as they are shown in that vid. I say boycott the vid. Just like South Park showed al gore, hes a fucking attention whore. He's only doing this to get attention and prob so he can become president or some stupid political reason. Fuck gore. Global warming is natural. Just wait, its just going to get colder over the next 100 years. Sure, it may be very hot the next few years, but after that, it will get colder. Im claiming it because i know.

most of what you said i agree with except for this, volcanoes have been around for many years and the past 14 have been the hottest on record, last year was the hottest. I don't know what else to say, I'm not saying I'm right, just the facts.

just because that movie said it doesnt mean it is true. Hollywood gives awards to any movie like that and hypes because they want to push their opinions on everyone

Pompeii was believed to be the hottest on record and the fact that there have been how many eruptions since the time we have been able to record temperature.

in some other thread about global warming some guy quoted an article. it said something like wats been said before. Earth goes through cycles. then he said that it is predicted we may have a miny ice age in 2012. i believe the earth goes through cycles. we are damaging the earth but its not goin to cause the end of humunity. People can not stop the end of humanity. (im catholic so this is what i believe)God will decide when the end of the world is. We cannot deciede when the time is right.

w.e if he just wants attention, this movies looks very well done and it's what he supports, the movie may not match the trailer and may be horrible but its difficult to produce an incredible movie when you really just care about being famous (in my opinion)

its jsut the earths cycles but we should still stop poulution because its bad

oh ya al gore needs to go home and dont go out in public

all the stuff about cycles makes perfect sense except the fact that it is possible that we have fucked up so bad by using all the fossil fuels and polluting the air and cuttin down the rainforests and shit that we've completely altered the cycles and may have fucked ourselves over

i dont think we've altered it, just spead it up until the end of the heat part of the cycle (if this is all true) and our generation (most of the kids on this site) will be the ones to find how end it, or deal with it

You are retarded my friend, you can no longer participate in this thread.

But its bullshit, and now millions of people are gonna freak out about this movie and its gonna be fucking stupid! Cause we could stop driving cars, stop warhouse/factories that emit Carbon and shit, and it WOULD DO THE SAME SHIT! Its all natural, the earth WILL get warmer and then it WILL get colder. PERIOD.

so has colorado, im kinda curious what that means because i know that the "net" temperature of earth's surface will rise, so im curious to see if in 50 years there will be skiing in utah and colorado

What everyone has been saying about the earth going in cycles with regard to global warming/cooling is completly true (it is called the carbon cycle). In the past the earth has responded to rises in temperature/CO2 levels through a variety of methods (such as absorption into the oceans), and continued the cycle (the orbit of the earth also has a role in this cycle). However, these methods only can do so much at a time, and if the CO2 emmission levels become too high these natural methods will not work well enough. So the CO2 will be dumped into the atmospehere, and global heat levels will rise. Eventually the global system will probably be able to pull all the CO2 out of the atmosphere, but it will take a long time and likely poison much of the earth (especially the oceans). I think these two charts may illustrate my points the best.

This first chart shows the CO2 levels over the past 400 thousand years. You can see the cycles working, but the recent industrial revolution has caused a hugh increase in CO2 past any previous high.

Here is the corresponding heat graph. Again you can see a rather large jump at the end.

i agree with you, there just trying to scare people to use clean cars and such, which isnt really a bad but its beign done the wroung way

no they dont. global warming is happening, regardless of what politicians say. magazines like nature and scientific american have been providing proof for this for the past two decades.

also, someone mentioned that the earth goes through natural cycles. this is not a natural fucking cycle. even if you tried to blame this as a periodic occurrence, this type of cycle usually happens over thousands of years, not a few decades. if youll compare the cycles of the past with the evolution of plants, youll notice that plants usually had bursts in growth/evolution to use up all the CO2 because it is favourable for plant growth. that wont happen now, because we are killing all the fucking plants.

if your ignoring this you are an ignorant conservative. it is happening. its not fucking hollywood that is such a stupid fucking copout.

I won't comment on this thread, if any of you knew me I'm sure you'd know my stance on this issue. However please don't type like a moron if you expect anyone to take your insightful political/scientific opinion seriously.

Looks like a neat movie, but I think that the whole global warming trend, is simply a facade, thats been created by such "important" figureheads such as politicians. For me the reason why our planet is becoming hotter and hotter is due to (like someone stated above) global heat trends. We are just finishing off the latest ice age, there is nothing more than that. Now I don't know when the last one began, but since the beginning of intelligent human existence the last Ice Age has been slowly leaving. The next phaze is a period of warmth. It's just typical weather patterns that have been occurring long before we ever step foot on earth and will be here until we leave, (or die).

I dont know if anyone else wrote this same or similar thing, because I just skiimed the thread, but yeah, thats my thoughts. Read A Short History of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson (it touches on this a little bit).

And I think humans are infact harming the earth, to say that we aren't is just absurd. We are the worst thing to ever happen to this planet. With approaching 6-7 billion (I dont know) people, there is nothing more we can do to prevent further damage to our planet

yes, it IS a natural cycle, the earth heats and cools itself every couple hundred years (or whatever) and its been steadily going up for the last many thousand years. howver, the last decade or so have been hotter than the should be, but its been hotter than it is right now. Right befor the ice age it was even hotter than it is right now, which most likely (in my opinoin) means that an iceage will come within the next couple hundred years if we are to fallow the trend that we have seen in the past.

I can see where they are coming from, however there is also the fact that although some glaciers are receeding, some are also growing.. which kinda contradicts.

its known as an interglacier period, but I believe that in the last 50 years humans have drastically helped speed up this warming trend. The earth is not used to having huge cities as heat sinks and pollution in the atmoshpere. I don't think fifty thousand years ago there was huge industrailized cities pumping out massive amouts of pollution. The earth has been a self suffiecient ecosystem for millions of years without any problem. But now there are many factors that were brought on by humans that now affect and interfere with the earths balanced ecosystem. We have done harm to the planet and it will continue to affect us.

Are you retarted. Scientists have been well aware and have preached the global warming issue as the politicians have tried to supress the hype and kept trying to get oil and other fossil fuels. Its definetely not the other way dipshit.

I'm not going to tell anybody that they're dumb because they're conservative, but i think you have the right image in your head, right now I could pretty accurately say that there is almost no argument that we NOT having to do with the rising temperatures, george bush has said these exact following words after being told by certain environmentalists whats going on with Global Warming: "environmentalist scare tactics" is what he called it. I think that no man ignorant enough to say something like that should be leading one of the largest present day super powers. Absolutely insane that he controls the country that 100's of millions of people live in. Anybody that disagrees with this problem has to be undereducated, not conservative, just undereducted.

all anyone can really say is this, the earth is getting warmer, and there are ways we can atleast slow down this warmth. however, stopping the warmth could be impossible, depending on how much of it is caused by humans

this topic can be debated either way, and i really dont think that anyone should get so heated over it esp on this site cause theres so many diff things you can throw out there that go either way

with the warmest its ever been on earth, yeah they say that, but how far back do they have of temperature averages for all over the world? we can only tell the temp from 1000 yrs ago in places like asia n africa, no1 lived in north america or western europe that had nearly the "technology" to even get close to the accuracy of temperature readings we have today

also, think about this, the ice age occured, first time that people think this occured, but we really rnt sure because no1 knows what happened much longer before that. what caused the iceage? the dinosaures? the earth goes thru cooling and warming phases, and like what is happeneing now, there was a very fast change going into the ice age

also consider this, how are we supposed to stop developing countries from using things like fossil fuels, we may have the technology to come up with something else to use, but they will have to go through the whole time period we did of using them before they will change what they use for fuel

basically this is a huge argument that people have evidence for either way, the fact is the earth is warming up fast and we are effected greatly like this, we could help slow down the warming but this might not stop it first of all, and second to get the whole world to do this would be like hitler killing all the jews in the world, its really not possible if you think about it

i think we should just let history determine itself, okay so what if we all end up dieing and there are no humans left, why are we even alive in the first place? just go with the flow and see what happens

Wow...that's all I can say

We have absolutely no scientific data of a climate on earth other than the one we live in. We haven't had a major climate change ever. IT HAS BEEN THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND THE CLIMATE HAS STAYED THE SAME.....DUHHHHHHHRRRRRR. Biased scientific magazines don't show "proof". What you claim as "proof" is some variabled research done out in the middle of Wyoming claiming to have proof of the world. There is no doubt that humans are having a negative impact on the earth, but it's not what people in scientific magazines say it is. Learn your material before you go calling shots.

I'm starting to think that you might just be the most informed person on this site. it's a refreshing change.

first: we are currently undergoing a major climate change.

second: scientific magazines are the most objective writing possible. it is pure facts, every single article is written by usually 5 or 6 people with phd.s. proof is not some test in wyoming, rather it is looking at data for the past millions of years on the climate

third: we have undergone major climate changes before, such as the carboniferous era

Pre-historic climate conditions are inferred by analyzing tree rings, sediment layers, ice cores, and corals. Each of these contain annual layers whose characteristics depend in part on the climate conditions that existed during the creation of each layer. These characteristics include chemical composition, color, texture, and thickness. The following sections describe how these characteristics are used to piece together the record of ancient climate variations.

You said "we have absolutely no scientific data of a climate on earth other than the one we live in" then "it has been thousands of years and the climate has stayed the same."

Well, how do we know the climate has stayed the same for thousands of years if we don't know what earth's climate has been like before now? I'm not trying to prove you wrong or anything, nor am I trying to be a dick, just saying that doesn't make sense, maybe you meant something else?

Ok, here's the way I see it, we know what's going on with climate right now. Correct. We cannot PROVE what's going on with earth because science cannot PROVE anything, only provide explinations. Correct. Well, if those two statements are true, then we have an outline of where we are going to end up in terms of global climate over the next half century (I'm pretty sure everyone reading this knows what the data that scientists have collected means). That also means that morally we should solve this problem no matter if we started it or not, because that's irrelivant. No profit will be made by solving this problem, this must be understood in order to continue 100%. I believe that this is the main reason that most people do not want to deal with this problem is that they will make no money from it. I hope some of you agree with what i just said.
