What do you find interesting in the world and why?

Im the same way. Have you read anything about the counterculture in the 1960's and shit and what kind of influence it had on the computer industry? Some real interesting stories in there. Hippies + computer shit. Pretty interesting

Ps i love the responses in here, but lets try to bring a little more detail into it :)

What interests you guys about life or cultures? There has to be some more defined aspect that you like.

quantum physics.

string theory, the universe, the concept of space and time, and spacetime.

it's all crazy shit, and we as humans haven't even scraped the surface of what's really out there...

oh, and why i think its interesting?

because no matter how you look at it, our culture, civilization, EVERYTHING is sooo miniscule and so insignificant it's ridiculous. and to see how serious some people can take everything, and how serious they can be about their lives and futures really cracks me up.

i'm not saying that you shouldn't try in life - i'm a full-time college student applying for internships like crazy. i'm just suggesting people lighten up a little bit, because regardless, we're all going to die someday. and our accomplishments will vanish with the existence of our human race - which is inevitably going to happen when our sun turns into a red star.

as for quantum physics - there is so much we as "intelligent know-all humans" can't even grasp. shit that the world's leading physicists can't explain, and odds are we as humans may never be able to grasp all of it.

space. it just fascinates me. The idea that when i go outside, i can look at some point in the sky, and think that i could move in that direction at millions of miles per hour for years, and never hit anything. The idea of it going on forever makes me feel so small and insignificant. I look up at the moon and think of how close that really is. It's crazy to think of how long it took us to even launch a tiny tin ball that could make "beep" sounds.

That, and aviation in general. Come on, 100 years ago we barely knew how to fly and planes were really more of a novelty thing that anything else. Now its just become so common. That was one of the first things i noticed after 9/11. Looking up during the day, and not seeing any planes way above or hearing them on approach to boston (closest to me)

I'll just throw out a few random things on my mind.

In 100 years, no one living right now will be alive, what will the world be like?

What do other species on other planets look like, think, and do they think about us?

What is in the farthest depths of the ocean?

How is it that dragons show up in every culture with similar traits but these cultures never met?

how much will technology advance in the next 50 years?

the 10th dimension

Also another thing to think about that is pretty interesting is just look at the technology in 1900 and then now. What amazing things will happen between 2008 and 2100?

What will life be like in 20 thousand years? Will we be around? Probably not, it's strange to think how insignificant we are, which leads me to think, what is the purpose of life? It just evolves and dies for no purpose? Are humans doomed the second they are born? Are we made for a purpose? Why were people made, just because of evolution or is something shaping species and things like that? What would happen if we found an alien, would it destroy religion?

I'll add some stuff to this later when I think of more things

Here are just a couple of things:

First, I love how there are all these little niche worlds of people, like groups of people brought together by a similar interest. Like I watched this documentary about crossword puzzles, and there's a whole little world of people obsessed with crosswords.

Secondly, I'm taking anatomy and physiology this year and I'm really just so amazed by how complex and perfect our bodies are. It seems like such a miracle that we can even move, let alone see and react and so on. On that same note, our brains are incredible. I watched this great discovery channel program about the stuff our brains do when we're in extreme situations, in order to stay alive. Like, if you're starving, your hair and nails will basically stop growing, to conserve energy. That kind of thing is so cool to me.

SPACE. I can learn so much about physics, theories, dynamics, etc. and I still understand next to nothing about it. It's rediculous to even try and comprehend any less basic aspect of the universe. I end up completely in awe over its size.

I never really thought of NS like that. It's very strange to think that there are over 100,000 members, most, if not all got here because we all liked some of the same aspects of skiing. Strange how we all have specific preferences about skiing, yet here we all are on the same site talking about roughly the same things all year.

The other day when I was getting out of work and I said by to my co-workers and managers and left. I looked to the my right and there were these two teenagers with a puppy and for some reason I realized that I did not know anything at all about these people but we were both at the same place at the same time.

To me it is amazing how there are so many different people that co-exist, living together, leading their own lives. You can see some one once or everyday. you can even see a person you have never seen before everyday. The communities we all live in, the towns and cities. Each with our own individual homes and families not knowing about the person you pass while walking out of work. Just think about how little people you really know and then see how many people you pass during your day that you have never seen before and dont know one thing about them. Its really amazing. hard to explain.

I like landscapes. I love exploring unknown places and finding hidden spots that contain natural beauty. I like the solace and remoteness I feel in some places.

Space, concepts of time, natural world, geophysics, BIOLOGY, microbio, psychology, physiology, geography, architecture, phenomena unexplained and random trivia. Deciding on a major was, uh, difficult. English was right out tho.

I like looking and people and trying to figure out why they are who they are why they do what they do and i am pretty good at it i come up with some mind boggling theories in my head about society and how things click but i can never remember them im gunna start carrying around a thought book cuz i have some pretty crazy thoughts

I actually do the same thing!

and quinny, i'm a big fan of nature and landscapes too. Nationgeographic.com is my desktop wallpaper tresure chest...some super bitching landscapes shots on there.

Love

Why do people love certain hobbies, people, foods, etc? And what makes someone love something? Obviously it's attraction, but why are some people attracted to skiing and others snowboarding. Everyone loves something, but why. People have different tastes and likes, which leads them to love certain things and people, but why! There's so many questions about love. I know I'll never understand it, but would it even be that great to completely understand love? Then you'll just over think it, like I kind of am now.

I find it interesting that nearly all of our technological advancments in recent history have first been researched to be used in wars. We seem to have an obsession with finding easier and more efficient ways of killing eachother.

politics and religion

politics b/c every country has some form of it depends on wat type of ppl is ruling

religion since alot of people have wars over it

How complicated our human bodies are. How complicated it is to create another human being. I wonder what other planets with intelligent life are like, and I want to know how advanced aliens are. They are out there, because it's mathematically impossible for them not to be. It's some weird stuff.

1. The idea of music, just think what you and the world be like if the world didn't have a beat or rythem.

2. The idea of consumerism, why do we buy stuff? why do we need money? all that stuff

3. Religion, I know it started because people needed something to look up to, but why all the detail and struggle, I don't think it's worth it.

4.The human body, why it can only take so much stress and wear, are we eventually going to evolve to something more like a Kryptonian?

Are we going to be able to eventually aquire new abilties? Like stuff from the comics?

5.The idea of numbers being used to represent stuff, so many numbers have different properties.

4 is my biggest question

this thread kind of reminds me of making a resume in a highschool class, pretending you do all the things you wish you did to make you seem more interesting.

I like to go on long hikes while painting a picture and getting in touch with nature while i write a poem and a song and contemplate how the world works....riiiight

limits interest me; my own mental and physical limits and those of others.

I was thinking of this today

do you think that one person got the idea of liking the opposite gender and then people just caught on, kind of jumped on bandwagon? then it just evolved from there?

where did the instinct evolve from?

I have to say people. I went to a strip club(my friends dragged me into it) last night and it was interesting to see all the differnt kinds of people there. Even the people that worked there. There were definately shady old men, but there were also regular young guys, and even businessmen looking people. I was talking to this one stripper and she said how she is a lawyer too and just does this for fun on the weekends. I just thought wow you dont really know people till you see them up close. Its interesting how people can seem on the outside at first glance but once you see them up close you always find something unique.

listening to a really nervous person say a speach into a microphone because u hear them gasp for breath really loud and it cracks me up everytime. i do the same thing tho. anyways i find alot more stuff interesting i just cant find it in my brain right now

I find most everything interesting, it is just who I am.

But since you want specifics, and since I am thinking about it right now, we'll hit up the Christian religion.

I am currently taking a class that explores the question of whether or not God can suffer in Christianity. We have surveyed a decent number of theologians and their answers to the question, such as Augustine, the Lutheran confessional writings, Tillich, Thomasius, Kitamori, Moltmann, Calvin, etc; and we are only halfway through the course.

Throughout it I have been astounded by the material, but even more by the fact that so many of my Christian friends have no idea where the ideas they subscribe to come from. They believe in doctrines, but they have no basis of understanding beyond some selections of scripture.

More frustrating to me is that before this class, I also did not fully understand the complexity of what a person ascribes to when they label themselves as "Lutheran" or "Methodist" or "Unitarian" or what have you. This was the case in my own faith, and while I wasn't completely ignorant and certainly was not opposed to thinking about other religions and challenges to my own set of beliefs, I knew very little about where the ideas I ascribe to came from, and know only a little more now.

It boggles my mind that anyone can hold a world view or religion or philosophy without fully understanding where it came from, or why they should believe it.

This is not an attack on Christianity, but merely pointing out that we are often very complacent about where we place our beliefs, and that the majority of people who claim to be Christian don't even know how what they ascribe to came to mean what it does today.

I like this thread.

Agreed that this thread is awesome. I find many of the things people talked about interesting, but one in particular I don't think anyone has discussed yet.

I am always blown away by how tiny decisions and changes in our life can have huge repercussions. Such as how choosing which route to take when walking somewhere or what to do on a Friday evening can lead to you doing something or meeting someone that completely alters the entire route of your life. It can be tiny things too. For example, I went on a run tonight. As I was walking into my room, I saw my friend at the other end of the hall, but he was already walking the other way towards his room so he didn't see me. I just thought that if I had been gone literally two seconds less, I may have hung out with him tonight, met someone new or had a discussion that would change my life. All because I stopped to tie my shoe or went a little slow. Amazing....

Everything About Skiing.

-Other People-

I understand us, park folk, we go there on a mission every day. Whether it be to learn somthing new, shred, or have fun with your friends.. But when I look at everyone else at the mountain, I don't see them as individuals. I see them as a big group, which now i refer to as gapers, joey's, or 'people from jersey'. Its just mind blowing when seen from a new perspective, they ride up the gondola, look at the map.. i've come to hate all of them almost, especially racers ( sorry mattyb and 518brattt, you guys are the exception ), but i fuck with racers like its my job.. especially in my alter form. The masses infest mountains, they do it as a big organization too. Through the park, not just 1 gaper will change somthing, but when all the gapelings ( young gapers ) decide to go over the lip of the jump going .5mph, it degrades the features we know and love. This is why I can't look at them as individuals, but as a whole. I think for the half of it, people go skiing to have the status. For example

-Rich Guy From Jersey

"Oh wow, you missed a great weekend at Gore Mountain."

-Poorer Guy From Jersey in the Work Place that probably had to Work over the weekend

"Gee Snazzles, Your a lucky duck!"

Basically a richer form, from jersey, of a Claimer.

And you can't say you haven't seen these people. Your riding up the lift watching people ski down beneath and they are just going down and they look like they are having no fun at all. Like they just have to get down, so they can do it all again... BORING.

--Racing--

Racing, in my opinion, is just a glorified sport by anyone that goes skiing, that has money. Referring to the sport as a whole, they are our sport, but in a mirror that reflects the meaning and reasoning. Because I for damn sure would not be wearing a tight ass suit, but backwards because it would be in a mirror.

A racer, in my eyes, strays to have the best time.. (Correct me MattyB)

I can relate to this, but my 'best times' would be 'lap times' or the time it takes me to make 1 complete lap from the endpoint of the gondola, through the parks ( upper and lower sleighride ) and back to the gondola. I have worked on being able to get the best lap times, by getting friendly with the lifties ( they are all awesome ) and cutting the patrol/instructor line, which is always empty and it has a landing pad so you can go fast into it. And right back up the gondola.

Thats the Time Aspect.. but DAMN, theres so much more to it, like what your going to do in the park.

Theres soooo much you can do its rediculous, Thats why I always take laps, unless there is powder.. but even then everythings soft! So the park is that much better!

For me, the mountain without park is no fun. I can shred diamonds if need be, but straying from the park is just plain boring. Thats why, I butter shit while im skiing when im out of the park, because it adds another element of freestyle'ness to the lap whilst your not in the park.

I could go on for hours, because skiing to me... is that interesting. ( Ive been at ACC ( Adirondack Community College )) for this semester and last semester and this is probably the 2nd longest piece of writing, Ive Written. I cant focus in school, i just wanna be out there or doing somthing else. After I get my associates I wanna move to Utah and see what life is like at the real deal..

And I want a tattoo, you guys will love it, ive got this sick idea.

aliens or afterdeath... just straight up creepy to think about an all of the reasons or possiblities

why do 99.9% of all women say they have nothing to wear yet more cloths in there room than most people in the world would go through in 5 or 6 years.

Human interaction and interpretation is neat. I love finding a person who works on the exact same level as me. And how people look at things.

I find tripping a very intresting experience because its basically the most free your mind will ever be. Your thoughts are totally unfiltered and you think of really deepthoughts which one cant usually get without the influence of the drug. Its such a spiritual experience. And Ive always wondered what it would be for a person to trip who was blind. It must be a mindfuck. I think the human brain and how it can be stimulated in so many ways is intersting.

I think Space and the universe is just such a profound idea that is unfathomable.

ALso peoples personalitys. Why isnt everyone the same? What causes a person to be an energetic person versus a relaxed person, what causes peoples skin to be differnt colors around the world? I mean I know its DNA and stuff but why is there even DNA why isnt everyone exactly the same, similar to animals. Why can Humans think and animals cannot.

SO many things. COlors are also another thing. I always wondered if green looks the same to everyone.

i think the most interesting thing in life is thinking about what is after it....i strongly believe that this life is just a time to learn lessons for the next life....i mean why was this world and everything we know of created what was the whole purpose of life even though i love life and i love living it each and every day. just think about what everything we do as people is for sme reason just like we got to school to learn to be well educated for our futures then we get jobs to make money for the present but also the future so we can retire then we retire...then die.....what was that created for....i believe it was for the next thing after this life then after the next life and so on.....i believe we will have some significance to whatever this is we are in........so live your life and always know that every little experience that comes your way will shape the rest of your life whatever you make of it but most of all enjoy it because i believe that that is the key

Go anyway with lots of people. Sports arena, concert, mall, ski hill, and think that every single person you see has a life as complex and interesting as yours. That and, if you didnt know it yet, snapping is the sound of your finger slapping the base of your thumb, not your fingers rubbing together.

i love being on the dock of my lake right before a storm, then you can watch the rain come across the lake until it hits you like a wall its the coolest thing

geology. it impacts almost every aspect of life. from skiing down mountains, to growing food to feed the human race, everyone is counting on it. and it holds way more secrets than you may think at first glance.

I probably spend up to 50 percent of my days thinking about why certain types of people end up being who they are and act the way they do. I believe it is very important to do this with yourself, if you really think about it for days it might seem like your totally depressed but your really just figuring out alot of crazy shit that has happened in your life that has pretty much gone unnoticed.
Seeing the seasons change from winter to spring has really got me interested in whether patterns, think about it you have the earth moving at an angle around this blazing hot sun which causes water to evaporate condense and precipitate and it just causes all this crazy shit to happen, real sick,,just started thinking about it lately and dont know much about this type of science but it seems real cool

repeating words over and over again, untillthey dont make sense to me, and they sound weird as fuck.. its really cool

I am interested in so many things

-Hard math because i think its cool to have something in front of you that you don't know the answer to and you have to find your way there (which is essentially life)

-high points of view interest me, i love to go up to cliffs or hills or something where you can see for a long long ways and observe things, like one above my school where you can see the different architecture in different neighborhoods and soccer games in the park etc. and also ones where you can just see nature forever

-Religion really interests me, i like to have my beliefs challenged so that i can reafirm them and talk to other people aobut what they believe. I love to look for and research logical explanations vs religious ones... ex. parting of the red sea= reed sea plus strong winds and earthquake? and i love to read religious texts. It's fascinating to me to look at different sets of beliefs and realize how similiar yet how different they are when they all arose for the same reason, and many of them in the same areas.

-So many other things, environmental science is really cool, especially alternative energy ( if you don't know what geothermal energy is look it up) because we could really change the way we live for the better, less pollution,. less dependence on oil, healthier lifestyles..., and just millions of other things interest me

people talking in different languages.

i have absolutely no idea what those people are saying but they can understand eachother.

how little people really know about the universe.

earth is one planet in the milky way galaxy when there are thousands of other galaxys full of planets in the universe. and weve only stepped foot on one other planet
