title pretty much says it all. I wanna get a general consensus on what an alchy is and also, what do you consider a drinking problem.

boys and girls be serious please i need to know

alcoholic to me is someone drinking a lot all the time, and getting drunk almost everytime. they need they're alcohol.

an example: at a friends house at 9 in the morning, his dad walks in right from bed and says "morning boys, im kinda thirsty." (goes to the fridge takes out a couple tall boys and leaves).

When you feel sick, frustrated and tired from alcohol withdrawal after how ever long up to a day or two. not to be confused with a hangover haha.

Somebody who is drunk all the time. Never goes a day without drinking, because they need to be drunk. People who get the shakes. People who drink heavily all the time.

what about drinking to fall asleep easier and to be able to have inspiration to write and such or just to feel happy?

i think its probably drinking like more than should consistently....

e.g. drinking like more than 1 beer or like drink in a night probably

hey ass im trying to find out if im adddicted to alchohol I wanna hear from realy ppl not docters. sorry my thread didnt really say that. relax man sorrry

1 beer = 1 shot = 1 glass of wine

more than 1 of these in one night = alcohol

e.x.

1 beer + 0 shots + 0 wines = not alcoholic

1 beer+ 1 shot + 0 wines = Alcoholic

0 beer + 0 shots + 2 wines = Alcoholic

undersmell me?

as soon as they NEED (keyword here) alcohol for any reason it is considered alcoholic behaviour. Now, that does include "I've had a shitty day an need a drink to calm down" which is very common among young adults.

The difference comes is the regular occurrence is when you are a alcoholic. So people can have some alcoholic tendencies from time to time but not be an alcoholic, but those tendencies tend to lead to more alcoholic behaviour and becoming a full blown alcoholic.

My dad just got out of treatment a few months ago and I have had some problems with booze this year so my therapist has been helping both of us out with this issue.

Bottom line is that some people can handle alcohol, some can't. Everyone has their limit and going past it leads to disaster. The key is to know them and stay within them.

alcohol actually prevents the deepest levels of sleep, and if you want inspiration for writing then i'm willing to bet you could do it stoned/sober a lot better than drunk. and if you find yourself drinking "just to feel happy" every day or almost every day then yea i would say your an alcoholic. all good things in moderation man,

you must have disciprine!!!

I really think I get what you mean, It makes a lot of sense to me wich unfortunatly puts me in the spot of not knowing. I dont necessarily need alchohol as much as I just drink to be be unstressed when I sleep and like it helps me 2 think

yes sir smoking makes my mind right the best shit, but Ive had drug problems through my family as well as alcohol so I refuse to do anything beside drink anymore because i Know ill get addicted easily. Took vicoden for a month for surgery and felt like I needed it to live,

im way to easily addicted to things so I dont do them

As has been said b4 when it affects other aspects of your life.

I would classify an alcoholic as anyone who is hiding their drinking habits from friends and drinking alone more than 3 times a week

Hell, I can drink 5-6 days a week just a beer or two but can stop no problem and I have zero social dependence. For example I'm living at my parents house for the summer and haven't had a drink for 4 weeks now and this is the first time I've thought about it.

Moral of the story is that it depends on you and your habits

OP seems just shy of 16...

Really though I think its the manner in which you drink as apposed to how much you drink.

A person that gets drunk to much and can't handle them selfs: get belligerent, sloppy and act like a dumbass.

Well I got in over my head this year (freshman year of college) and I never drank in HS. So I went from not drinking to some insane levels of drinking pretty quick...which led to a huge drop in grades and other shit that I really don't wanna talk about in NSG.

So for now I'm not drinking, mainly cause I'm living at home, but when I go to school again in the fall I'm going start from the bottom, drink 2-3 max, figure out what I can handle and what I can't. If I can't handle any, which is likely then I won't drink.

I never needed to drink, but my friends and I were didn't have much else to do so we drank.

you realize that alcohol is alot more addictive and more potentially harmful right?

marijuana is alot better for those three things that you get drunk for imo. (sleeping, creativity, and stress relief)

but whatever floats your boat. But if your drinking every day to cope with these simple problems id consider that an alcoholic.

I understand that completely man, its just from an outside view ppl would rather see you drink then smoke from where im from.

and for they ass who said I sound just shy of 15 fuckoff, im probably older than you are.

Didn't really read the rest of the thread because I'm kinda tipsy (ironic, I know), but I would say that true alcoholism is when you are dependent on alcohol to get through the day or do normal tasks, start showing withdrawal symptoms if you don't drink alcohol, or you let alcohol affect your relationships, schoolwork, regular work, and other social interactions. When people joke and say they are alcoholics because they are in college - that's just binge drinking on a regular basis, not alcoholism. Real alcoholics wake up and NEED to have a drink or else they are miserable. It's basically the equivalent of being addicted to cigarettes, except the withdrawal can be deadly. It's pretty brutal. Having more than one drink a night regularly does not make you an alcoholic. Hell, I do that most nights, but I'm not dependent on alcohol for anything, and have no problem going extended periods of time without it.

there is no number count of drinks that qualifies you as alcoholic. I love to drink but daily see the consequences of drinking and alcoholism. I would say that many americans read the guidelines of what constitutes alcoholism and either disregard it and continue with a drinking problem, or dont understand what is acceptable and judge/overreact/not understand real life.
the clinical definition of alcoholism:

Alcoholism is characterized by:
  • a prolonged period of frequent, heavy alcohol use.
  • the inability to control drinking once it has begun.
  • physical dependence manifested by withdrawal symptoms when the individual stops using alcohol.
  • tolerance, or the need to use more and more alcohol to achieve the same effects.
  • a variety of social and/or legal problems arising from alcohol use

1.) When you are dependent on it to get you through the day.

2.) When your use becomes abuse, lack of respect.

i guess i cant put a number on how many drinks, but it comes down to how much you rely on booze in daily life

that reply post makes me feel so much better lol yes im pretty drunk rn but drinking in no way inhibits anything i do

hah that picture is great and like i wannabe at peace with everyone right now. im years older the 15 btw

and im having a seriously bad night so like im sorry if im a dick

addiction means when something takes priority in your life. like, if you blow off your friends or doing home work to drink. i guess thats sort of part of alcoholism but more of the mental addiction. Physical addiction would be when your absolutely craving a drink, like a smoke craves a cigerette

Not even just drinking a lot, they can't control themselves while drunk all the time. They depend on drinking to get themselves through everything, and reward themselves for getting through things by drinking even more.

Acting like you're in college when you're not in college = alcoholic
Being in college voids all chances of being an alcoholic

When you drink at work regularly (unless you are a bartender or something)

or when you put brandy in your morning coffee.
