Terry fox deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame. Terry was a man who despite having cancer and having to amputate his leg ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry raised awareness of cancer and inspired millions of Canadians and people worldwide. He raised money for cancer research pushing it forward and giving hope to many. Terry Fox deserves to be in the Canadian hall of fame. His great dedication and determination towards this cause proved that anything is possible if you simply believe.

In 1977 Terry was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. To stop the spread of cancer, doctors amputated his leg - six inches (15 cm) above the knee. Terry then learned how to use an artificial leg. After three weeks he was walking. (Terry never forgot his experience in the hospital he was angry how little money was spent on cancer research in Canada. He turned his anger into a mission he would run across the country to raise both awareness and money for his fight against cancer.1) Others who had suffered were also never forgotten in the eyes of Terry. He deiced to stand up for others and for him to raise awareness for cancer. “That's the thing about cancer. I'm not the only one. It happens all the time, to other people. I'm not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It'll inspire more people. I could have sat on my rear end, I could have forgotten what I'd seen in the hospital, but I didn't.”2 He decided to run across the country and give the public knowledge and understanding about this fatal disease. This is what he intended to do and he did exactly that. (He averaged 43 km (26 miles) per day, and as he progressed across six provinces in Canada, the image of a solitary young man running slowly on an artificial leg drew increasing attention from newspapers and television.3 ) Terry Fox’s name is known world wide and is an image in the hopeful eyes of citizens suffering from cancer. (On Sept. 13, 1981, the first Terry Fox Run was held. More than 300,000 Canadians took part in the event at 760 sites across the country. The run raised $3.5 million. The Terry Fox Run is a family affair for the Foxes.1) This event goes on annually to this date and now Terry Fox has raised more money then he could have ever dreamed of. (To date, more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.22) Terry was the start of something bigger than he could ever imagine.
