what do resorts do when it snows over 5 feet?

i heard some resorts had to close, but how do they deal with that much snow? it seems like you could sink into it and get stuck and shit. kirkwood got 9 feet? 9 inches here in ny would be a blizzard, 9feet is our season total, they got it in 3 days

im going to go cry some more now

I went to wv this morning, and it was absolutely bulletproof due to the lack of snow. There hasnt been a significant snowfall in over three weeks. This winter has sucked for the entire EC so far.

yeh but in places where its too flat for avalanches what do they do? does the snow just settle and you can ski mostly on top with out sinking if you stop?

Im sure they groom flat spots so people don't get stuck, but on really deep days people tend to stay off the flats anyway.

Wow I really can't imagine that much snow... Right now, it is almost 50 out and most of the snow on our lawn has up and gone.

at baker in 98/99 they had an anual snowfall of 1140 inches...they dig out the lifts groom the grommers and everyone skis powder

there was over 5 feet of pow that came down in just a day.. so it is pretty much like that. And the storm has already brought over 116 new inches of snow and it keeps coming down.

what happened at bridger last year with 100 inches is they bombed alot of stuff then everything else got skied out

it was 65 in PA today. i was gauna go swiming it was so hot. i think the last time this place got anything more than 8 inches was in 1996. a hill that closess for TOO MUCH snow is only a dream to me. and to top everything off my brother is leaving for snowbird tomarow for a week. i should just drop out of school and move to utah.

 
2 years ago in CO we had a 7 foot storm in a matter of 2 or 3 days. they closed the freeways so the lucky few people who got stuck up there got to ski for a whole week on an empty mountain because nobody could get up to the ski resorts.

yes heavenly did there best to manage to open 2 lifts yesterday, and when they did there was an hour long wait at each chair. Talk about having the worst powder day of my life.

when they say 5 feet or whatever its not really 5 5 feet right? the snow settles down a bit, so like 5 feet is prolly like 3feet depending on how heavy the snow is, i think thats how it is but i could be wrong.. still that is a shit load of snow

they dig out what they need to, the snow cats groom the important areas, patrol throws a shit ton of bombs, they try to get the road open, and then we get our time in the whiteroom. It's very easy to get stuck, you gotta avoid flat spots like your life depended on it, and try to stay on your feet no matter what.

 
bomb the life out of the entire mountain once, then agian for good measure over the course of 2 days. Then open!

Yeah, they shoot rockets into avalanche prone areas to trigger the avalanches before someone skis over them and does it themselves. And they usually cant open everything right away.

Dig out the lifts, bomb the step stuff and get out of the people's way as they race for the deep stuff. That's how it was all last week.

 
haha yup. Its like the army took I think it was Squaws shooter thing for use in Iraq. It was towed by a groomer and was a full blown cannon to blast out the mountain and cause some big avalanches! WOO BOMBS

They use either howitzers, avalaunchers or hand thrown charges. The hand thrown charges are about the equivalent of 2 sticks of dynamite to give you an idea...
