just wondering what makes it a super pipe as opposed to a normal pipe.

Little known fact about super pipes:

The super pipe gets its dimentions from king kongs peinis. The first ever superpipe was in down town New York City and it was make by none other than King Kong himself. You see, when the helicopters finaly made him fall off the Empire State Building he went crashing to the ground. And of course when somthing as huge as King Kong falls a few thousand feet it leaves a dent in the ground.

Well who would'a known that King Kong's schlong would have left a perfect, 200 yard long, 18 foot deep ditch in the ground? Turns out the day after the city workers removed the body, Manhattan was engulfed in a massive blizzard. The penial imprint was filled with snow. The local kids were quick to recognize this great natural feature and went to town skiing and boarding on it. Infact it was so good that people STOPED going to the mountains to ride. The mountain people didn't like this at all so they sent their cronnies out with messuring sticks and tapes, made some carful observatios and took some notes.

The fruits of their research was the super pipe dragon. this machine perfectly recreates King Kongs Peinis imprint where ever they want, so skiers and boarders can have the most enjoyable expirience on snow where ever, when ever.

Everyone seems to know that last part, but I gotta give it up for my man Kong and his dong, because without either of them we'd still be riding pussy little halfpipes.

man... pipe skiing has been around a lot longer than all of us thought... king kong was a while ago.

regular pipe has 7-10'walls at the biggest. it very little trany and also should have a 90 degree vert. super pipe is usaly 12-17'walls at the biggest with a big trany (June Mtn), and dosent need to reach a 90 degree vert. then there is the newer big guy super pipe like at sunday river were the wall can reach 22' i have yet to see one. Rummor has it that mammoth will have 2 super pipes next season the main park super pipe will be replaced with one of the 22' monsters. we can only hope

 
that makes a little more sense than the king kong fiasco that was miseducating the children.

The super pipe was invented by Al Clark, whistler local, sweet snowboarder. Not sure exactly but I think the walls are 16' and bigger to be a super pipe.

the canadians can claim all they want but the first super 'sized' pipes were built in the early 90's by the snowboard camps at mt hood. Frank Wells at MHSC, Harper at Windells and Kenyen Robinson at HCS all built HAND SHAPED pipes up to 20 ft tall. Long before Hood got dragons all the pipes were hand shaped by crews of 15 diggers. The cats would come in once at the begining of each session rough out the pipe in the glacier then it would take 2 full days by hand to shape it. because of the snow melt the pipes would start out around 12 ft and get wider and deeper each session until the 4th or 5th week when they got up to 18-20 ft deep. The last great year of monster hand dug pipes was 97 when Hood got a regular sized dragon. Al's 'superpipe' camp didnt come along until 98 or 99

Also, some snowboard magazine last year (Transworld I think) ran an article about pipe construction and the various cutters out there as Pipe Dragon isn't the only manufacturer out there. And they said that the walls are built a few degrees below vert although I'm not exactly sure why.

The first pipe dragon was made by, shit, i cant remember his name, i need to check my history on this one. Anyway, it was made by a guy in Breckenridge, and he used it to cut what is recognized as the first superpipe with walls 15 feet 6' high. 1'6' of it was straight vert, and it was about 35 feet wide. The transition was based on a 15 foot vert ramp used for a professional skateboard competition. The dimensions now have been altered to be better for skis and snowboards to handle.

so to answer the original question, there is no specific requirement, but I would say anything bigger than 15 feet that has at least 6' of straight vert would be a superpipe.

mmmmm...not a superpipe? someone said that a normal pipe is something like 7-9 feet walls or something? the rivers has 21 foot walls and its 400 feet long..i live next to josh lempert don't argue with me fool

Above someone said the inventer was from Breck and it was 15 ft pipe. NOPE. His name is Doug and is from Berthud Co. His first machine waas only 8ft modeled after vert ramps at the time...this was in the late 80's. He didnt build a superdragon until summer of 99. That machine was modeled after the large hand dug pipes of the early to mid 90's at the various Mt hood summer camps. That machine was first used at Hood then Whistler. Whistler I believe bought the prototype, Mammoth bought the first one in production and Breck bought the second. At the same time Sugarloaf was developing the supersized HPG with Bombardier. The folowing year Okemo bought a superdragon and the ASC resorts bought super sized HPGs.

I dont think ppl realize how big sunday rivers pipe is until they actually see it... i tihnk you can just tell when its a superpipe, but the other questions is, who the hell CARES!?

 
not that it matters at all, but id say that anything over the normal 10-12 foot walls is super. then again, arent most pipes these days like 17 feet? maybe this means that the criteria has to change...

 
Al Clark was the guy who founded the superpipe idea. There may have been some in the past that just happened, but he was the guy with the idea.

Also, a superpipe doesn't have 6 ft of vert, what the fuck? It usually just goes to vert or is just under vert, usually just under vert, thats the way pipes work best. You could'nt even ski in a pipe with 6 ft of vert.
