WHAT CAR SHOULD I GET?!

Get a truck if youre going to haul shit and go offroad, thats what their built for. As for fitting a sled AND a toolbox, forget it. Only way you could do that is a long bed and since you want an ext cab or crew cab, you will fucking hate backing the fucker out. Better to just get a truck and invest in sled trailor IMO.
As far as trucks go it sounds like your needs can only be achieved by a fullsize. You can pick up 88-98 Chevy 1500 models from anywhere to $1500-6000 depending on condition. However with those your going to look at 15 mpg tops unless they have the newer LS Vortecs in them. Better choice would be the newer 99-02 Silverados, they get better gas mileage, but also more expensive (still in that price range though).

 
2010 chevy equinox gets 32mpg highway and is AWD if you need an SUV that gets super gas mileage, and it looks pretty good in my opinion.

2010 ford fusion gets 34mpg highway and is really practical.

Both of these vehicles you can find used for $18k with minimal miles on them.

i would be all about subaru's but they suck at gas mileage from what I can gather.
 
Those are female cars and cannot actually carry or haul much (sled, gear, etc), and definitely cannot go off road whatsoever. The "AWD" in those type of vehicles is worthless, as the rear wheels cannot receive enough torque to power the vehicle by themselves. The subaru AWD system can function with just rear wheel traction. They are also automatic.

Maybe 18k is something your parents can afford to buy you, but it sounds like the OP sounds like he's looking for something cheaper.
 
yeah but he said gas mileage was important. which kind of meant he was hoping to not get a 22mpg highway gas guzzler.

The Equinox will get great insurance rates and come with a warranty still. It's definitely not a cheap vehicle coming in at $17-18k at an auction house, but SUV's are never cheap, at least a decent one.

you can get an old RAV4 or subaru something or Izuzu somefuck if you are on a budget.
 
so i decided even though everything i want can be on a truck, its just to massive. So i think im going to stick to an suv type, and i can always have a hitch and just haul a sled on a trailer. still undecided on whether it will be awd, or 2 wheel and 4 etc. or manual, or automatic drive.
 
If you want to do any serious off road, look for something with selectable, true 4WD. Newer GMC/Chevys (~03+) have available 2/awd/4hi/4lo options on some suvs, but you would have to take a mileage sacrifice, even with the smaller engines available unfortunately.

I expect to get some heat for this, but stop being a bitch and get the truck. They arent that much bigger to handle and after a week of driving you will be fine. In no way is a 1/2 ton truck "massive".
 
Ya thats fairly horrid gas mileage, trucks get that much and there twice and big and 3x more powerful

i have a 98 XJ. do NOT get a older jeep unless you are mechanically inclined and can work on your own shit, otherwise it will cost you soo much money to fix.

i love my xj though, i have a 5.5inch long arm lift on it with 33's and some more mods. its my daily driver and im always working on it, practically every week something new needs fixed but thats what you get when you buy a jeep.

im looking for a diesel truck for a daily driver soon so i can tow the jeep around.
 
I've got a manual 2001 subaru forrester, it runs like a champ and it's pretty much what your asking for. look for one of those!!
 
No. If he wants to put the sled in the bed of the truck, but doesn't want a truck big enough for it, then a truck does no good at that point. Trucks handle poorer than a forester, get worse mileage, and suck in the snow compared to a forester. Get a forester and trailer the sled behind. Great AWD system for when you have no sled, more fun to drive, handles far better for those windy mountain roads, cheaper insurance, and definitely the most economical choice.

you can fit a sled in a short bed truck. the track might stick out a bit, but if you have it strapped down properly you would be fine...
 
thats what im seriously considering, and just getting a sled trailer! but im not 100% sure yet, still looking at trucks and some of the newer more reliable jeeps
 
Still recommending a 1995.5-2004 Yota Tacoma Xtra cab 4wd (selectable 2hi, 4hi, 4lo). The available 2.7L 4cyl or 3.4 V6 have about the same mpgs, so I'd say the V6. A sled can fit in the back with the gate down, or you can tow it no problem with a hitch. Xtra cab seats 4 (although its not comfortable for the back 2), but the back area is also great for gear and such. They are also not large trucks (classification: compact truck), and they do mighty well off road.

Failing that, subaru forester, 05 or older. But you may have trouble towing a sled.
 
one of my buddies has almost the exact thing, and im gonna test it out sometime this week. ill see how it goes and see if i wanna go with that kind of truck
 
get a subie, outback if you want better gas mileage or a forrester for more ground clearence. Get it in manual and you will never slip ever. Just drove mine in a 2ft storm last week and didnt slip once.

alright so here is what I got from your paragraph you are looking for in a vehicle.

so with that list I would need to know what budget you have? You probably are not going to find a truck that will fit your need being that most trucks have V8s in them and only newer trucks have 4 doors and such, you could get an older one with a half door or something but it won't be massively comfortable.
I would suggest a Durango but you want decent gas millage so there goes that idea.
SInce the average sled lets say weighs in at 550lbs, really anything can tow it at a later date. assuming you are looking for something fun along with easy to maintain I would say get a Jeep Wrangler with a I6 under the hood or a Cherokee with the same engine. it will tow a sled easily when you get one, they both seat 5 comfortable enough. both are good gas millage. and both are known outdoor vehicles and have huge aftermarkets for parts if you so desire them.
from what you listed I don't think you will find a truck that will fit a sled in the back and meet all your other needs so a trailer will be needed down the line.

Also depending on your budget look into toyota 4runners. I love those and if I had a bigger budget when I was looking around I would have gotten a late 90's SR5 4runner.
if you think a car might work, and depending on your level of shitty roads you plan on driving, go Audi., screw Subbies get the original. My old A4, before I totaled her, would take me everywhere I wanted to go, the only problem was that I cracked the oil pan and hit the oil pan on things to often for me to suggest them to people who are going to be driving on dug out gravel roads or offroading of any sort.

I love my Durango but it seems like you are not looking for 13MPG city so I won't suggest a big Detroit V8 to you.
 
Nissan Patrol! Dirt cheap and easy to mod into a crawler!! Plus the U.N. use them so its not like youre f**king up the environment?!?! Surely?

I'd honestly say get a piece of crap truck because its your first vehicle and such, I got a 90's toyota truck for my first vehicle and I was looking for alot of the same things you were and I pretty much tried driving it into the ground and didn't work, can't beat them. Plus their are alot of them for parts and they are relatively inexpensive
