What camera should I buy

I want to get a camera before the season starts. I have little experience with any camera but the one on my phone and I’m not sure what to get. My budget is anything less then a 1000. I want to do some photos but mostly videos but I also want to be able to hand it to my friends so they can film. What would be the best option, or the right direction that I should go.

Hey man, i would go for Sony. If you're willing to spend a couple hundred more, B&H has a great kit deal on a Sony A7II (i put the link below). Sony will give you the best balance of photo/video output. I'm a photographer and almost exclusively shoot on Canon, but there is not a great photo/video dual threat from either Nikon or Canon. My last few jobs ive used the Sony A7R and been incredibly impressed. It's lightweight, solid sensor, strong for both photo and video. The A6500 would be a good starting point too, bit less money. Just invest in a good lens. Your style will evolve, you can upgrade your body, but a good lens will get you further.

thanks for the help i think i'm going with the Sony a6500

just so you know I think Sony is less than a month away from releasing the A7Siii and A6700, could be worth waiting to see what those bring, and also it'll reduce prices of the A6500

There might be some better options around in your price range than Sony.

If you don't mind using a micro 4/3 sensor camera, Panasonic and Olympus make some sweet cameras with a ton of lenses available. Check out the G85 for instance, you have to up your budget significantly to get all it offers in a Sony. Or Olympus e-m5 mkii

I have the same requirements for my new camera, so read thru most of the threads and what I can see, is if your budget is high then get a mirrorless camera (usually around like 600-1000 dollars) I liked the GH5.

HOWEVER there is no way I'm putting a +1000 dollar beauty like the GH5 in the line of fire that is the terrain park OR in the hands of my friends. (idk whats more dangerous)

I think im just gonna go with the Hero 7! the hypersmooth seems dope, you can throw it off a cliff into a pool of water, leave it out in the snow all night with time-lapse on, stream a live vid of me smoking a bean on the lift ... idk just seems like my kinda cam!!

maybe one day ill nut up and get that GH5...

yikes I don't even know where to start with this post

$600-1000 isn't "high" especially considering the fact that you need a hell of a lot more supporting equipment than just the mirrorless body to start filming, I'm not being condescending, just realistic

GH5 is $2k+, and you're never going to get any remotely decent footage if you're a pussy about using the camera, thats a fact. The GH5 is a tank and can survive snow no problem. As far as friends go, thats your prerogative but again its not a precious gem, its a camera meant to be used. Its not going to disintegrate when someone touches it, neither is filming in a terrain park "dangerous"

Hypersmooth is the opposite of dope, I posted about it earlier today in M&A, its bullshit marketing. The sensor is 12mp which is super close to 16:9 4K, and Hypersmooth is EIS not OIS, so its cropping into the image, lowering the resolution, and also making it so you can't use ND filters. If for some reason you don't believe me, read this blog post from GoPro employee Abe K:http://abekislevitz.com/gopro-hero7-black/

Very insightful, I don't really think your being condescending, just telling it like it is. You know I don't really know all that much on about these babies & had no idea the GH was tough like that. But I do know that attachments are vital upgrades that run up quite a check over time & up front. I think what were trying to find here is a set up thats not a MASSIVE down payment and would be upgrade well over time. Feel free to recommend anything

inb4 nooooob. at least were in the right forum lol

hypersmooth itself is trash and the fact that it’s the GoPro 7s only defining feature is laughable compared to previous gens. If you’re remotely serious about filmmaking hypersmooth shouldn’t be considered as a usable option IMO

rip still waiting on a7siii ;(

yeah I was wrong on that one, all the major rumors pointed at end of October :(

it goes to show if you wait on tech you never know how long you’ll be waiting, might as well get a great camera now and capture great content in the meantime
