Getting some stuff going this year and need a camera any help would be awesome!

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right

away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future? –I could spend from 700-1000$, obviously I would prefer a

lower cost if it is quality. And yes I can invest more in the future.

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used

one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned

your own? –Have used HD camcorders and I own an old

sony handycam.

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics,

etc) –Not much, may have a tripod.

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are

you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think

you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc) –A lot of skiing, but also some short films and just filming

life in general.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could

not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the

filming? – I will be doing a lot of the filming but I would

want to be able to hand it to a very trustworthy friend or two to film me

sometimes.

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on

record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc) – a lot of filming from a tripod, some follow cam(will have a gopro for this

soon)

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing,

what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard

drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great. –will either be using macbook pro or imac. Good specs

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just

learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout) -final cut pro

Hey man, welcome to posting on ns, glad you saw the thread up top and followed it, most newbs don't do that.

For your camera, I'd suggest one of the canon flash cameras. They record to SD cards which are a very cheap and reliable medium, and from what I've seen produce a great set of images. I don't know too much about them so I assume somebody else can chime in, but if you could find a used or refurbished version of the camera linked below you'd be right in your price range.

It seems you are willing to invest a good chunk of change which is good, I would recommend this camerahttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/671645-REG/Canon_4355B001_VIXIA_HF_M30_Dual.html
And I like how you said you mostly use a tripod, and if you have a little more money invest in a nice tripod, you will not regret ithttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/567602-REG/Manfrotto_190XDB_with_701HDV_Video.html
this one is nice and would go well with the camera listed above and you can get a $50 mail-in rebate so its a really good deal in my opinion.
Then get some 2-3 SD cards for the camera and since you said you have access to a computer, go out and film.

Any of the HG or HF series from Canon are your best bet. Your probably looking at around $700 for the cam and then add maybe a lens and some accessories and your looking at $1000.

I personally like the HF S200 or The HG 21.

Good first post though glad you actually looked around before you posted. +k

Thanks for the info people! any specific suggestions on lens upgrades for these types of cameras? any links to info on those would be awesome too!

I have the HF200 and it's great. Bought an opteka fisheye off ebay they aren't that expensive if that would be something you want. I also have the 701/190 tripod someone linked to above and I made a steadicam too. PM me if you want more info on any of this stuff
