What camera, GL1, VX1000, or PV-GS500?

Hey guys, I'm looking into making a high quality film this winter. I have a low budget. The cameras that I have found through research in my pricerange are: The Canon GL1, The Sony VX1000, or the Panasonic PV-GS500. The GL1 and Sony look more professional and have the handel on top, while the GS500 looks more like a soccer mom camera. I've heard good things about all of them. I can get the GS500 for just under $700 new. The GL2 would be like $800-$1000 used, as will the VX1000. What would you suggest? I really want a camera with the handel for easy follow cams. Please give me educated opinions and information, thanks.

No I want all types of shots, like tripod and set up shots. What I mean is follow cams would be easy on the cams with a handle and hard on the GS500. How do you hold it?

I hold both sides from underneath. With a handle it tends to rock side to side. I use to have the 1k. The only thing I use the handle for is when I'm just standing around, not filming.

dont get a gl1 they are crap, if you can try for a gl2, and if you dont have enough money get a vx1000, they get awesome color and are pretty damn cheap.

i wasn't impressed with the results from the gs500. i'd say go with one of the other two. probly gl1 because it has a lcd which comes in handy sometimes.

i would say vx1000 out of those, the colors are amazing and you can get some great shots. One thing you might want to know is if your going to be doing tripod shots with a camera like that, cheaper tripods cant support it. If you really want to put your effort into it i would say the best, most affordable tripod head would be the manfrotto 501.

yea a tripod would be the next best thing to invest in after purchasing the vx1000, the handle is sick and all, but sometimes hard to get a steady shot, i think the vx2100 is the best all around camera tho, and much less grainy then the 1000, but other then that theres not much difference.

and also, for the manfrotto head..... does the quality of the legs matter and will the head fit on any tripod? i have a tripod but it doesnt have the main screw on the top, and was wondering if i could just replace it? is there any tripod you guys recomend...

hahaha it be really interesting to know your thoughts on why the Gl1 is crap and the GL2 is good.

they both got same size CCd chips, same number of them, same optical and digital zoom, 6 lux for low light, probably the same damn settings...

If you can pick it up with one finger you need to replace it. That is unless you've just spent 5 grand on a carbon fiber tripod. Also, the 501 has a much bigger mount than the cheapo tripods.

this is where i am stuck too...but I think I will just charge it before, at lunch, and after...and keep an extra battery and I think it will be good.

Like I heard the actual camera just like craps out and doesn't work in cold......I don't think they were talking about the battery.

oh....well, I would hope it would be just the battery but I don't know

It is a 13 year old camera...but a good deal, and yet a few hundred more and you can get a better camera...don't worry, I am lost too.

another things because the vx1000 is quite a bit older you will probably want to buy a crappy minidv capture cam

when you use playback it wears down the heads and its pretty expensive to replace. it doesnt have ot even take footage only replay it for capturing on to your computer. i think id go with a gs 400 not 5 because it has a viewfinder which is realy usefull

keep saving and get a vx2 or 21, i have a vx2000, i like it i can get some pretty good colors, i hate uploading shit online because the quality always goes to shit for me, but it was worth saving for, you can find them for around $1250 if you look hard

i have a vx1000 and it didnt come in very good condition, but i used it like every week for 2 seasons and i never had it die on me or anything. though i have a vx2100 now and i like it much better, its gona cost like 600 more for the 2100 and mabye 300 or 400 more for the 2000. the colors are similar, and i think the overall picture is better, its alot less digital looking. but you have to us all manual controls all the time, or the picture can look like crap.

whil with the vx1000 ive put it on full auto while my friends are filming and it still turns out great.

so its harder to get a good picture out of a 21k but when you spend your time setting everything up it looks much better than a 1k and the 21 does amazingly good at night.

a gl2 would also be a good choice, i think they are cheaper than vx2000 and still look good.

theres also the dvx but that costs even a little more than the vx2100, but that gets great looking footage too.

so pretty much if you can only spend 900-1000 get a vx1k if you can spend a couple hundred more get a gl2 or vx2k. if you want to spend like 1600 or so get a vx2100.

Im amazed at the prices you guys are throwing around for these cameras. Is it really possible to pick up a vx1 for under a grand and a vx2 for just a couple hundred more? Where do you find prices on used cameras like this because every time im on ebay everything is at least 1200+

i got a dvc30 which is really good but it is a little more expensive but the vx100 is really good it is also good for skating if ur into filming that too

I think I'm getting a GS-320......just for this season. I'll continue to save up enough and eventually get a VX2000 for the season after this up coming one. How is the GS-320. Any shots with it? It's better than the shitty 1ccd GS series cam i have right now.

1ccd isn't necessarily shitty. The ccd is all about color, not definition or quality. I have a 1ccd HD camera and it looks amazing, just as good as a gl2 or vx21 just maybe dimmer colors but that is what FCP is for.

hope your kidding..

im trading my beat up vx1000 and death lens for a mint condition dvx100b, bescor lights, case and external mic.. if that tells you anything

the only real cons

-difficult to get clean solid blacks, without grain in low light situations

- no lcd for inside/tripod shots

gl1 and gs are both shitty

I'm like getting the GS-500 for sure and then upgrading to a VX2000 at the end of the season when I have more cash. I need a decent camera for this year. I can barely get the $600 dollars for the GS-500.

anyone who doesnt say vx doesnt know what they are talking about, party because it shouldnt even be in the same class as the other two cameras mentioned as far as performance.

ALOT of people take vx 1000 over GL2+VX2100, mostly skateboarders thoughhhh

makes some nice warm colors, way better than vx 2 on snow visually if warmth and that nice orange glow is what your into

no you could at least get a TRV if you don't have the money for a vx. GS29 is only used as a capture deck and by soccer moms , dont waste your time and money
