What balaclava?

I usually just use the built-in one on the Trew merino baselayer, but when I do a separate one, I like the Mons Royale hinged balaclava (they've changed the name a bunch so idk what exactly it's called but the hinge is the most important part). I like being able to pull down the bottom half to get some air, without it constricting my chin like a regular balaclava would when I pull it down. And it's better for pulling out the strands

Merino balaclavas tend to be polarizing, but I like the breathability and the fact that they almost never smell. Main downsides are that (1) some people find them too itchy and (2) merino sheds fibers more than most synthetics, so I sometimes end up with some wool in my mouth.
 
I’m currently using an oakley one from a few seasons back thats hinged and its worked pretty well. I’d also echo what luke said. I find merino tends to conform to your face compared to draping over it and that causes it to be kinda annoying around the mouth.

I wash my black strap one like you have all the time and if you dry it it returns to it’s normal size. Blackstrap is the way to go. They make an even warmer one now too.

another vote for the mons royale hinged balaclava, i used it the whole season and didn't have any smell issues.
 
Dakine for me when its buttfuckingly cold out. otherwise just a mountain hardwear neck gaiter for extra freeride steeze, but really im just too fucking sweaty all the time and cannot wear a facemask 24/7

if it is way cold I run a fleece balaclava from Costco. those things are super warm. mostly just wear two buffs though one as a helmet liner and one as a neck tube/mask
 
What style do you like? Tube? Balaclava? Hood?

As someone said earlier, merino is good for keeping smells at bay but can be polarizing.

Blackstrap makes a hinged option similar to those recommended, too.

Got North Face’s one for cheap and it’s comfy and well fitting as someone who likes to wear a mask over the nose and under the mouth depending on the time

Hey everyone!

When I hit the slopes, I usually wear a balaclava from BlackStrap, Under Armour. I've found these brands offer a great balance of warmth, breathability, and comfort.

Here are a few things I particularly like:

Material: The fabric is often a blend of polyester and spandex, making it stretchy and super comfortable to wear under a helmet.

Moisture Management: They do a great job wicking away sweat, which is crucial for staying dry and warm.

Design: I prefer models with flat seams to avoid irritation. Some also have adjustable openings for the nose and mouth, which allow for better breathing without getting too cold.

Versatility: They can be worn in different ways: as a full balaclava, a neck gaiter, or just to cover the face, which is really handy depending on the weather conditions.
