What are your strategies before you head to the hill before a comp

I block it out until Im ready to step up to the start gate. Im easily stressed out and anxiety kills performance.

A couple weeks before the comp, I switch to a high protein and carbohydrate diet to build energy storage. My training becomes longer and more focused on what I want to accomplish, If its a slopestyle, Ill work on my complete run and making sure the motions are memorised. If its skimo, then I focus on transition techniques and breathing routines. For freeride/moguls, I simulate the terrain to practice certain tricks.

On contest weekend, I make sure my sleep patern is right and I will do a complete warm up and stretching. Make sure I eat an early breakfast and bring lots of small snacks. Practice is about feeling confortable and not doing the biggest tricks. When the course closes, thats when all hell breaks loose for me. My heart skips, I shake and sweat like crazy. I stay relaxed and focus on having fun and not expecting to throw down the best line of my life.

So far, Its been working well.

Can't tell if that was sarcasm or not but that just made comp skiing seem so much more gay

Thank you for letting me brag!

Never heard of it, but you know it’s a legit ski event when the dude in second place is wearing snowboard boots

It’s basically a fun comp that’s put on for the cold smoke powder fest at whitewater, there’s not ski or board category so it’s mixed

Also there’s only one way to prepare for a Freeride comp and that’s smoking a bunch of weed and forgetting what you’re supposed to do

Works for ski boss

Not much of a brag it’s fuckin cold smoke dude that barely even counts as a comp, and I know because that’s me in 3rd place in the photo

Why havent we rode together yet?

I tied for 3rd as a King overall. I did the randonnee in 2h48 and place 7th on the pro category that morning... so a lot more going on there. Plus, its been 5 years I have tried to win the event, placing 3rd and 2nd 3 times.

I was dissed by a few members from my tips to prepare for contests. The claim was proof that I actually compete and not blow smoke out my ass. If I would have pulled out scores from 2005, the NS Trolls win and I would have looked like an insecure child.

So I put in my 2 cents for OP, got trolled and now starting to regret even posting.

My sacasm meter is off to the repair shop.

I dont like competing in reality. Im 31 and have to sustain my first passion with a career; if I get hurt and loose my medical certificate, I loose my home, car, skis, bike...everything. There is too much on the line. Before every contest; I couldnt sleep, get sweats, shake and ultimatly... get psyched out. With practice, it gets better.

So why do it? I truly believe that the best skier is the only one that can ride all aspects of the sport well. Ski instructing, park, pole bashing, moguls, HP, skimo... and the contest scene; I try keep up with all of it. Contest skiing is another game psychologically. You have to send it on demand, flawlessly on the first try. Dude... that is a skill in itself.

Im sick of overuse injuries. Blowing out my knee while getting off the couch after a long day touring was quite humbling. For 5 weeks I was crutching around and 2 weeks of physio to gain stability again. I was lucky enough to blow it 2 months before going back to work. Contest scene takes a lot out of you; emotionnally, physically and financially. My time has past, but to the younger generation; I have these words:

If you wanna win, you are going to have to climb over me to get it. Then lets party!

Dunno man let’s ride together I’ll be at whitewater most of next season, your response was pretty accurate if this was a serious thread... but it’s not. Most people here don’t do any serious competing so....

hahaha

Oh goddammit... when is my sacasm meter gonna be fixed?

I get all excited when people are thinking about competing. Tend to make great friendships through competition, even though I only do a few.

This season, I got really excited about the Pass and racking up mileage. It was easy to find hikers. But, when I set out to build a booter or get stoked about mixing tricks in the back country; cant find anyone who wants to join. Miss those huck days...

The younger generation is on the rise man, I just turned 20 this year, there’s plenty of hucking going on, and if you want to meet some awesome people through competition come to some of the FWQ’s nearby like Revy or Red mtn
