Western State

Hey guys, please don't try and drive me away from gunninson, adn try and be pretty honest. I'm a 17 year old who loves skiing, and loves filming and producing films. I've lived on the east coast my whole life, my family is pretty into skiing and i take trips up north almost every weekend.

When it came to college apps, i decided to apply to western state of CO, i got in. I also got into fitchburg state, a school on the east coast which has a really film/video production program, which i also got into. My mom works at assumption college, a pretty good school, which i also got into. Both of the east coast schools are about 8,000 less than western state. Should i try and convince my rents to send me out there or do you think it's better having a better education and living east. I know i should stay here on the east coast, but i dont' want to live regrets. I love skiing, all i do is think about it, but i just dont' know how selfish that is of me to try and make my rents pay for me to ski.... SHould i take out a student loan? Any advice would be appreciated.

THanks guys

def better ed. cuz when ur older you can have a better job and ull get to ski more than not haveing a good job and just working to keep ur ass in line and shit like that...so take the good school and ski out east and then find a good job that pays well and earn money then go skiing when u have the moola

cuz if u get better education ull have the chance to maybe even own a job and like take as many vacations as u can...my friends dad owns his job and goes skiing every month and such

you could delay admission for a year, and live out here for a winter, working and ski bumming, then go back east to school.

ya but its your choice what you want to do so just come to them and say " hey i haven't decided what i want to do in school yet so i want to take a year to make some money before i make a rash decision"

ok guys, i talked to my rents, and they agreed to let me go, as long as i try hard at the school, ( very understandable). How hard is this school, what are some good majors that you recommend?

I got a Bachelor's in Business, Marketing Emphasis. They have a really good business program, they also just signed a bill allowing them to offer graduate programs, I am going to go back and get my MBA.

You will love it up here man

i'm leaving to CO tomorrow and western is one of the colleges i'm visiting. how many resorts are there near there, isnt it kinda just one. and if so how far are the others?

Crested Butte is sick and is very close. I think Monarch and purgatory are fairly close and if you want to drive a little bit Telluride and Silverton Mt are fairly close. Crested Butte is nasty though and is really all you need. And Silverton=god's gift to Earth. I just got done skiing there and I must say, although conditions weren't prime it was far and above the best skiing I have had all year if not in my whole life. I'm just speechless as to how sick it was. I don't know that much about Western State but driving through Gunnison the other day I thought it was a very cool town and the campus looks really nice.

Crested Butte/Monarch are half an hour one way or another. Summit County (Breck/Key/Abasin/Copper) are all about 2 and a half hours. Telluride is about an hour and 45 minutes. I'd say about 2 and a half to silverton. 2 hrs to wolf creek, and add another 45-hr for purgatory. Aspen is about 4 hours if i remember correctly, and powderhorn is around 2. Its sick if you can deal with skiing cb and monarch. Both are dope mtns, monarch gets more snow, CB has harder terrain and way more vertical, and right now a better park. Next year DC is building there park i believe, or they're training the CB park crew, and they're atleast sponsoring it so the park quality should be improved incredibally from what i've heard. Deffinately fun area if you take advantage of whats around you.

if you dont mind living in a town where there is nothing to do, go for it. id recommend you take a trip out there yourself so you see the college before you commit to going there. check out university of utah...its the shit.

Nothing to do if you dont ski, fish, golf, Mt Bike, Dirtbike, skate, play hockey, boat/kayak, snowmobile, wakeboard, climb, hike 14ers, off road, and party your ass off, then ya there is nothing to do, what a moron. Gunnison/Crested Butte is a Recreation paradise.

haha seriously. My god waht else do you need. Anything outdoors related that you could possibly think of you can do in Gunnison, and it will be sick. The views there are just amazing. The only thing you are missing out on is maybe like clubbing, but I'm not really the type of person to go clubbing all weekend every weekend.

he's right to an extent, it is somewhat boring alot of the time. I find the winter pratciularily the worst. Atleast in the summer you can do like 10 times as many things. Its a blast from April-mid October. Yay frisbee!

I'll be there in augest to start school. I love gunnison and the valley area. So much to do there...ski, climb, bike, jeep, kayak, backpack...i cant fucking wait.

im not trying to drive u away from western but u REALLY need to visit colleges before you go... i wanted to go to CU since i was a kid... but when i visited i was like "this really isnt for me" then i visited CSU for the hell of it and i thought thatd id hate it but damn dude that school is chill as fuck

so just visit the schools before u fuck urself over for 4 years... maybe you'll go and be like this is ill but i wouldnt risk just committing

well i guess its like this. if you are satisfied with just doing outdoors stuff and not having a type of city, gunnison is that. but, if you like a good social scence and any city at all, youll hate it there cause its just a small town.

I decided on Montana State for a bunch of reasons mainly the skiing/recreation being kickass, but Western was one of my choices. I was not particularly impressed with Gunnison itself but the fact that you have god's paradise 30 minutes up the road makes it totally worth it. I spent a while camping/ mt.biking in Crested Butte last summer and I love that town more than life itself. Seriously that is the most incredible place, any of you guys that live there you are very lucky people and I will be joining you someday very soon!

If I were you, I would get out of the comfort zone and go to school in Gunnison. Just drive and hang out in CB all the time and get off the east coast. No doubt you will get a great education at an eastern school, but if you apply yourself and take hard classes at Western you will get a fine education. Take my word- once you experience the seasons in the Colorado Rockies you will fall in love and never go back...

yo new people tell me who you are when you get there.

and to the girl above me.

gunni is ill if you know the right people, its the best party town hands down.

to bad she didn't chose western though, we need more girls.
