Africa was the sight of the greatest conquest of any area by Europeans at one time. Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, France, and Denmark all tried to grab as much land as they could as fast as they could and in turn divided tribes and groups of people that otherwise may not have been friendly, but would not have annihilated each other, against each other deliberately to create an easier to conquer continent. However Euros did this everywhere, including the Americas, but American's were so susceptible to disease their cultures fell apart long before they could be turned against each other.
African society did work together fine, just not with the same social hierarchies and without the same technologies Europeans developed. Until the Euros decided the best way to own the continent was to turn them against each other.
A perfect example of this is Rwanda. Two tribes that got along fine were forced to live together in one region under European rule, but the Germans (and later Belgians) feared the larger of the groups. So naturally they granted the smaller tribe higher social status within the new society to try to divide the africans against each other, and keep the larger group in check. Fast forward 100 years and those two groups are still fighting over superficial ethnic differences that were literally created by the Europeans, resulting in one of the worst genocides the world has seen. But that is simply a microcosm of sub Saharan Africa as a whole. Europeans draw new borders to fit their own treaties and agreements, end up with a new meshing of native African tribes, and divide them against each other to retain control, and by the time the Europeans leave you have groups hating each other for no real reason. Eritrea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sudan, Rwanda, South Africa, The Congo, The Ivory Coast, Senegal, Sierra Leone. All of those countries were directly created by Europeans with no say from any native peoples, and all have suffered horrific injustices because of it.
So lets look at the other options, what if Europeans had not invaded? Well the best example is Ethiopia, which no European nation ever conquered (fuck you, Mussolini!). The worst war they've had was really a civil war in the late 70's over communism, but there hasn't been a genocide or civil war based on tribal indifference or a lack of a functioning society. Ethiopia isn't perfect, but it shows that without thoughtless European colonialism African's can function within a society perfectly fine. There's a reason its the birthplace of the Rastafarian movement, it shows what Africa can do. And the real argument is that if they hadn't spent all the time from 1880-1943 trying to fend off Europeans, mostly Italians, they would be even better off today, as well as if their neighbors would have had the same freedom to grow into the modern world as they have kind of had.

No culture would emerge from a society ruled by foreigners who decided to chop up their homeland with no input from the native groups.
