West Trip Ideas

Hey everyone I’m in the middle of trying to plan a trip out west in March and I’m kind of stuck. There’s 4 of us going, ideally we would go somewhere that’s not too far from multiple mountains… and not terribly expensive. The only place out of the question is Bozeman since we did Bridger and big sky last year. Any lesser know places that would fit my bill? Thanks

What is your threshold for "terribly expensive"

Everything is kinda spendy especially multiple mtns. If you have one of the big passes go where there is a cluster of them.

Idk, where should I go out west is kind of impossible. You know about bridger and big sky. Go where you find good flight deals lodging seems reasonable. Conditions can very in the spring. March will be more spring vibes in Tahoe but maybe you want to go somewhere colder. Good park/ dont care? Idk.

Yo come to Targhee

Targhee is the place to be, went on multiple spring break trips in college and the snow was great, zero lines, fun terrain, and overall one of my favorite ski areas. Hoping to get out there at some point this winter to check out the new lift.

Fuck ya bud. Still super thin on the new terrain, so give it at least another month.

I would second Tahoe for March and multiple mountains. Can still find reasonable accommodations down in Carson or Reno if needed. Snowpack tends to stay a little later but can be hit or miss

Jackson, Tahoe, Utah check those. I’d rather ski one place all week and acquaint myself with it then go nuts and never have a clue what’s happening for 7 days straight.

Fly to Europe if you're old enough to rent a car. Will cost less if within the EU and you're not out there for the light powder so might as well go for the absurdly huge mountains.

March in Tahoe is rad. It’s either dumping 20 feet of snow or it is 40 and sunny. Staying in Reno for four people could be pretty cheap and the drive to the mountains isn’t bad.

If you have an epic pass, you can hit northstar for good park or Kirkwood for sick terrain (skip heavenly if you’re crunched for time or check it out if you’ve already got a few days at the other two). Both are good for pow days if it’s coming down. You can get 2 for 1 tickets on tuesdays at mt rose or reduced price afternoon tickets on Fridays if you were out in Reno the night before and need the morning to recover. Also, night skiing at boreal to keep the park shred going all day and all night. if you have ikon then obviously alpine and squaw, plus mammoth is doable if you want to take a day trip down there.

Anyone have any Epic pass tips for going west for a few days? Did Keystone and breck last year. I liked keystone much better due to less people there and better park. Anything I might not know? I wanna go when it’s warm, last year we went in February and it was -20 lmao

Stay in Truckee of Kings Beach and ride Northstar for a few days. If you want to do something steeper hit Kirkwood, also on the epic. CA can get cold too but it's about as good a bet warm sunny days. Usually by spring they gotten some good storms. Sometimes early season can be boney. Kinda feast or famine for snowstorms but if you want warm nice days and park laps, Northstar is one of the better options on the Epic imo. Also Kirkwood friggin rips, though a bit of a drive from north lake. I've done it plenty of times in day trips, but usually would stay with friends in South Lake to make it more reasonable. Heavenly kinda sucks though lol. Also on the epic. Good place to take a picture, and I guess you can make some turns while you're there. Sometimes they have a park of sorts.

Thanks for the advice homie. I’ll definitely look into North Star , also “good place to take a picture” ??? that’s how I felt about Vail.

2nded that heavenly is overrated. Kind of a trashy party vibe. “#1 destination for Most first chairs missed”. Northstar park is sick

I know people are saying not Colorado but just don't go to that Colorado. Southern CO in March is where it's at. The base is built up and huge storms are pretty common. Hit up unguided season at Silverton, then Wolf Creek, then Taos. Can't go wrong.

SW Co and NM are both pretty sick in spring. Flying there is the issue but I guess there’s montrose

Go to Utah. They’re having a great season so far and you can stay in Salt Lake, 25-45 mins from the resort depending on location, for pretty cheap. Also multiple resorts right there if that’s what you’re looking for

Here's the left field answer. Buy Indy passes and fly into Boise. Brundage, Tamarack, Soldier, Anthony Lakes, and Pomerelle all day tripable from the city and you can ski Bogus at night for $19. Not a typical trip and you won't ski any major destinations but it would be different and probably cheaper.

I would hit up Red Lodge, Montana. It’s on the way to the Bozeman area (about an hour from Bozeman coming from the Billings side). I usually go there in February-March time cause it usually dumps consistently, if you’re into powder and fun tree skiing.

Their high speed lifts, Cole Creek and Palisades are really awesome when open (usually are in March), fun laps where you actually ski more than you ride or are in line, most of the time on those lifts there is no line. The park is alright, nothing too special or unique about it, pretty typical for a mid-size montana ski area.

pic is from March 29th of last season, entering Coal Chute, deep renewing pow
