U.S. plans program cuts, Cheney says

WASHINGTON - The U.S. administration is planning cuts to 150 programs in the budget it will send to Congress for consideration this week, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

Farm subsidies, the Amtrak railway service, native schools, environmental protection and Medicaid – the health service for the poor and disabled – will all face cuts.

The administration wants to reduce spending on programs that are less effective or deemed unnecessary, and try to find the best way to make savings, Cheney said.

He called the proposed budget 'fair, reasonable, responsible.'

Its costing taxpayers trillions a year to keep old people alive for an extra 6 months of intensive hospital care. dude I took an amtrack from cumblerland maryland to hartford CT. It took about 16 hours and cost 300 bucks. I can make that drive in a car in about 7 hours for about the same in gas or I could fly in about 1.5 hours for the same amount of money.

the headline says that there will be cuts FOR those programms. not that theyre doing away with them. the cuts could be somthing like eliminating needless buerocracies where the only people getting screwed are federal employees who dont do anything anyhow. (as a state employee, i have some idea how government employees act)

or maybe youre all right, and were secretly preparing smaller reservations in the middle of nevada to send all the Indians to after we take away their schools. (its okay though, since they have all that casino money to live off of)

point being, that the article doesnt deliniate what these cuts are. so simmer.

Medicaid- I believe we should go for socialized healthcare, less lawsuits etc. So I do disagree with this.

The Europe thing is a good point, admittedly... but then again, that's a bunch of small countries each maintaining their own rail system. It would be quite a challenge for the US to pull it off.
