Gawker reports that the driver of the car was trying to get away from

cyclists at the back of the pack who were threatening him and his

15-year-old son:

The highly disturbing video shows several riders

piling up on the hood of the car before being thrown to the pavement.

Richard Neis has been identified locally as the driver of the car and

according to his lawyer, Neis was being threatened by cyclists at the

back of the group. Also in the car was his 15-year-old son, who told a

local newspaper that riders had been banging on the sides of the car and

his father had sped up to get away from them.

Eight people were taken to the hospital out of the ten reported injuries.

It looks like some sort of Critical Mass event gone wrong. As a cyclist, that shit pisses me off more than anything (Critical Mass, that is)

No idea if that's what was going on in the video, but for those who don't know what it is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass

It's basically a way for bikers to "take back the streets" while organizing and blocking traffic and shit in major cities. I personally think it just makes all cyclists look bad.

haha oh man thats fuckin gnarly.

in drivers ed we watched this video about divers hating cyclists and cyclists hating drivers and there was a bunch of stories about people getting hit and stuff. didnt see this tho

this

i understand you want some exercise but when you insist on acting like you own the road, fuck you

i've had bikers riding in the middle of my lane when there's 5 ft of shoulder

i wanted to hit him so bad

I fucking hate road bikers, they ride in the middle of the fucking road when theres perfectly good sidewalk because they have some ego problem about it. I would love to mow a bunch of them over like that

They are they because they are stuck up ignorant pricks that think they should get to ride there just like cars so honking wont do anything.

It's illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk in most places, dumbass. It has nothing to do with "some ego problem"

You make absolutely no fucking sense.

Bikers are supposed to be on the road. The road sometimes contains bike lanes, sometimes the road contains no bike lanes, in which case a bike is essentially a car as far as the rules go. No one is allowed to ride their bike on a sidewalk. A "bike path" usually refers to a recreational pathway alongside rivers and through parks, which obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with people who are riding to get from place to place and need to use the roads.

Cyclists have JUST as much of a right to the road as cars.

Slow down, give them safe space, and pass when it's safe to do so.

God forbid you get somewhere one minute later than you would've.

I'm not saying they don't have the right. It's just annoying when they are going 10mph down the middle of a 45mph lane when there is 10ft of shoulder they can ride on.

Idk how you do things up in Canada, but in the Metro Detroit, Oakland County Area we have "Bike Paths", asphalt pathways like sidewalks, that go for miles and miles through citys. We have paths that run from Milford to Pontiac, which is a good 30 miles, that run right next to the road and have distance signs and are made for commuting bikers, yet there are still the jersey wearing, tight short douchebags that insist on riding on the shoulder of the road because their $2300 trek is too good for "the recreational biker path" when they lead to the same exact places. Share the road with Motorcyclists they have a higher accident rate than anyone

You know what's more annoying? Having some idiot in a car tailgating you, possibly honking and yelling, while you're on your bike.

My parents live in Franklin, and I live in downtown Royal Oak, and I have never once seen these bike paths that you speak of, so I'll continue to be a jersey wearing, tight short, douchebag riding my $2300 Trek on the road.

Really i'm all for having bikers on the road, but if they are stupid about it and ride down the middle of the road, they are just being stupid and endangering their own lives when they could be on the shoulder and be much safer.

The main problem I have is that 80% of bikers(atleast around me) absolutley refuse to stop at stop signs. Then when they pull out in front of you and you hit them it's still your fault because you are in a motorized vehicle.

commerce road all the way down to orchard lake road. to Woodward. Fuck dude In Keego there's a path that disects the whole downtown that is blocked off to cars for bikes only. Or drive across M59. I could get to 4 bike paths that all take you to different citys within 3 minutes of my house

There's a variety of reasons that the person may not be hugging the shoulder. Sometimes the road is in poor condition with cracks, or loose gravel and potholes that may make it dangerous to hug the shoulder. Perhaps they are even riding closer to the center because they have nearly been killed when some impatient asshat did not wait until it was safe to go around and nearly hit them as they sped by in their 4,000 lb moving cube, while they apply make-up, text and eat a triple cheeseburger at the same time.

Again, take a deep breath and relax. The one minute it may take you to slow down and pass at a safe time is not a big deal.

bike paths definitely solve the problem, but are rarely available to ride on when you need to get to a specific place. When bikes are on the road they are essentially another car and must follow the rules of the road. Also, it is illegal to bike on the sidewalk, you will get fined. That being said, bikes should still stay to the right hand side of the lane to make it easier for cars to pass when it is busy.

I think roads NEED to have bike paths or a shoulder, and if they don't, bikes shouldn't be allowed on them.

Bikes and cars are two VERY different things and while I think it's great that you're riding your bike, getting some exercise, and enjoying yourself, it's dangerous, stupid, and annoying to have bikers riding on roads where 2 ton steel killing machines are flying by at 45 mph.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm kinda just playing devil's advocate here, because I always keep to the side of the road and obey traffic laws (for the most part - if I see there's clearly no cars I'll slow down and then cruise through a stop sign, but I never run red lights) Fuck, I'll even try to move over for traffic. I'm also going a hell of a lot faster than 10mph haha. I just hate that people think cyclists are the worst thing on the road when they're probably speeding, texting, and eating a Big Mac at the same time.

I think it's dangerous to allow 2 ton steel killing machines to just go everywhere with total disregard for their surroundings thinking that their right to getting somewhere is more important than anyone else's wellbeing.

I'm not even a road cyclist, but I am completely on their side. American drivers are total asshats on a whole. I'd say a good 80%+ are unfit to drive with little to no knowledge of the rules of the road and a lack of knowledge of how to properly handle a car.

Drivers Licenses are given out like free candy to anyone willing to pay for them because we live in a society that is almost entirely enslaved to automobiles.

I completely get and support the other side of the argument, but I just get worked up because one of my friends got fucked over. He was just driving down the road and a biker decided not to stop at a stop sign and went right out in front of him and my friend hit him. Luckily it was only a 30 mph road and my friend was going 20-25 so the guy was'nt hurt too bad. But it was all my friends fault because he was in a motorized vehicle even though there were witnesses that saw the biker run the stop sign.

In other words, let's do everything possible to discourage cycling as a viable means of transportation and relegate it to recreational status only, because America isn't fat enough and doesn't produce enough greenhouse emissions as it is.

The city I live in, Calgary, has an excellent network of bike pathways. In general, they're in much better repair - because of the cold climate Calgary roads have a lot of potholes and patchwork. So I would MUCH rather be on the pathways if they'll get me where I want to go... but they don't go everywhere, and in many cases they're a pretty significant detour because they're set up to let you ride by the river and through XYZ park. So much of the time, you're stuck on the roads, which rarely have bike lanes.

Because of the climate, which even when it's not cold is dry, roads get a lot of dirt and gravel buildup towards the edges and on a 700cc road tire with more or less no tread it's easy to fuck yourself up, particularly given that buried in that dust and gravel is, for all I know, a broken beer bottle (I flatted yesterday on a shard of glass some useless piece of shit provided for me). Not to mention there seems to be a global epidemic of stupidity whereby everyone is deathly afraid of getting hit by cars but no one is at all afraid of being hit by a bike travelling at 25mph, as if that won't kill you or put your car in the shop for a few grand just as easily as the honda civic you're so careful to avoid. Basically, I live in one of the best places to ride a bike as transport you're going to find, and it's still a nightmare at times.

Fact is I'm usually travelling at a good enough speed that I'm pretty easy to negotiate and like most cyclists will try to get out of the way where there's somewhere safe to ride off to the side. But calm the fuck down with your "oh my god I can't believe I'm travelling 20mph below what I'd like to be doing for these 15 seconds" bullshit. Look in the mirror, you're an asshole.

Which is why whenever there is an annoying ass cycler in the middle of the road I pull in front of them and slow down abrubtly until I'm stopped.
