Welfare

I don't like arguing politics. I try to listen to other people's arguments and then ask them questions, that will hopefully lead them to a point I want to make. kind of like a socratic type thing. anyways...

there's a lot of hate on government "handouts" like social security and welfare etc. my friends are all about private savings accounts. I don't know much about them, but I do know one thing.

as a first world country, and also the most powerful nation in the world, the united states can't have its disabled, elderly, and psychologically unfit to work citizens starving to death. this is vitally important. we can all agree some people are incapable of working for some reasons. therefore, somehow we have to take care of them. right?

so how do we do it? like I said, I don't know much about private savings accounts. but I'm pretty sure that any type of program like that has to have one or two aspects to work properly. either the rich have to pay more into it, or the current generation pays for the retiring generation. otherwise it just doesn't work.

also, I don't know a lot about welfare. but anyways, lets say for the sake of argument that 9 out of 10 people who get it don't deserve it. but that one person who does deserve it...see where I'm going? reread the 3rd paragraph.

I just see a lot of hate on safety-net type programs, and it leads me to believe these haters want to abolish them completely. I never hear anyone suggest any alternatives. please, I invite anyone to counter any of these arguments. I don't know that much on the subject, but that's the impression I've gotten as to how our country works.

i personally feel as though all people over the age of 70 should be exterminated in the most painful way possible. that would end the whole social security bullshit and these old ass people worrying about money. they serve our society nothing but being a burden to us. fucking old asses.

that was a little harsh dude...

but seriously when i turn the age where i cant get it up on my own im gonna just start doing some hardcore drugs off my welfare

haha i was just joking. although i do think they waste our money, that has nothing to do with it. the sarcasm meter was needed. and yeah when i get too old to do things, i'm gonna buy the most insane drugs that have been created by that time.

how do you starve a poor black man?

hide his welfare check underneath his work boots.

jk jk. im not racist or anything, i just thought the joke went along well with the thread.

imagine if there wasn't welfare and food stamps. I would be scared to screw up so much more. It would be like africa, you would just starve to deah if you messed up bad enough.

word

believe me, people living on welfare are not living it up. my friend works at 7-11, and he says people come in all the time and spend their welfare checks on slurpees and other shit. but their lives suck. I don't really care if they abuse the system, they have shitty lives. they marry ugly people, have ugly children, blow all their money on beer and cigs, and then glare at me in my nice clothes, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation.

I hear what you're saying but..yeahhhh

Lil story here.... I went up to my local grocery store the other night with $50 on me (that was my budget for the week for groceries) and a list of food. Before I enter the store I hear the loudest bass ever from this pimped out Lexus two spots over from where Im at. Red car, red tinted windows, red rims, the whole deal. I head in, start my shopping, basically counting everything up to the penny to make sure that I dont go over my budget. Just so happens the driver of the Lexus was ahead of me in line with his groceries which was A LOT more than mine. Total comes up and he swipes his gov't food card, pays for his beer with his own money and walks out. Now here's the problem. I work 45-60 hrs a week and have to budget myself like no other, rent, car payment, car insurance, electricity etc and yet this guy has literally the flashiest car Ive ever seen, "fly" clothes and has the gov paying for his food. Whats wrong with this?

your missing the whole point.

you should care if you want people to stop living their shity lives... and stop abusing the system. welfare should be a stepping stone for people to get back on their feet.. not something to live off of.

no I get it, I think you're missing the point.

thats what welfare is ideally, but some people are going to abuse the system. and some people simply can't work. they have deep psychological problems and if they had money and intelligent people that cared about them, theyd be institutionalized.

I dont know what you would even call me out on....I was just telling a story about what I encountered the other day. I didnt offer a solution to the welfare problem because I dont have one.

that IS too bad. but the argument that since things like that happen we should NOT have welfare or redistribution is asinine and wouldnt stand the light of day.

Well then change the system? There should be a way of helping those who need while at the same time providing a system that isnt being taken advantage of.

How can you say he doesnt get it and is missing the point, when you clearly said at the start of the thread that you know very little about the topic? He is spot on, on how welfare should ideally be ran. I agree with others that there are HUGE gaps in the system, where people will take advantage of social help programs and either try to live off them or fraud the system.

I dont quite get what point you are trying to make. You asked for people's opinions on the subject, but in each of your posts, you've made condescending comments towards those on welfare. You seem to already have an opinion on the subject, you just dont want to defend it.
