Weed accepted in 2014 Olympics?

Cannabis May Be Removed from Banned Lists by Sports Anti-doping Agency

John Fahey, the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has indicated the body may look at changing the criteria for cannabis as a banned substance for athletes. The idea that cannabis doesn't fall into the descriptions applied to performance enhancing drugs isn't new, but the fact that it's gaining traction is.

A coalition of Australian sporting bodies met with David Howman, WADA's general director. They wanted to express their contention that cannabis should not be on WADA's banned list of match-day performance enhancing drugs. After the meetings, a statement was released.

"There are those who believe that our current criteria need to be amended and that will be given appropriate consideration through this review process," Fahey said. He went on to talk about drugs that are banned in some sports but not in others. That's the crux of the argument for changing the criteria on cannabis.

What's really at issue is whether or not WADA, or any athletic governing body for that matter, will go on listing cannabis as a banned drug in sports where it is clearly not a performance enhancer. Currently, an athlete testing positive for cannabis can receive a two-year ban. That's incredibly harsh for something that has no discernible effect on the sporting outcome.

No decision this year

There won't be any change in the rules in time to mean anything for the 2012 London Olympics, but changes could be put in place as early as 2013, which would have an impact on the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

It seems WADA is considering the wider social picture wherein cannabis isn't seen nearly as negatively as in the past. People are becoming more accepting of the substance as a medicinal or recreational substance.

What sports would cannabis still be banned from?

WADA isn't looking at not testing for it at all, but not looking for cannabis unless it's use is shown to give a potential advantage in a particular sport. While it's not something that will help a competitor in most sporting endeavors, something which requires a steady hand is different. Two given are shooting and golf. The criteria for banning cannabis would be if it is shown to be performance enhancing.

It will be interesting to see how sports organizations in the United States react if an ant-doping body like WADA determines cannabis to be something they aren't going to test for in many competitions. The attitudes about the use of the plant are loosening in the U.S., but not as quickly as in some other countries. How will sports testing for cannabis be handled?

he's stoked

Nah anyone who was going to compete would've stopped for a little while and anyone who wasn't gonna compete would've kept smoking. This doesn't really change anything.

Glad to see some good news about the olympics, there hasnt been much yet! haha. Many people are rejoicing about this

It's really fucking sweet that this issue is being recognized though. For it to be in writing from officials is a huge step and hopefully just the idea instills a lot of thought from other athletes and officials. This is a positive foot forward, not just in our sport but in the global recognition of weed not being a harmful substance.

any smart athlete would not smoke in the first place. Any smoke like that in the lungs or whatever is terrible for any sort of sport, besides like poker if thats even considered a sport. The fact freeskiers are like ohhhhh shiiittt gotta smoke my weed just pisses me off. Weed is the most over rated, over priced, stupid drug ever.

weed smoke, in relative moderation, is not 'terrible' for your lungs. it's not doing your lungs any favors for sure, but athletes put worse things into their bodies.

i'd be surprised if it gets removed from the ban list this time around, but even if it does i doubt we will see a big difference. i'd say it's more just a sign of widespread acceptance of weed in the future, especially if a group that i wouldn't expect to be progressive is finally starting to view it in a more logical way. good on them

I definitely do not think it is performance enhancing, but its good to keep in mind that weed speeds up the metabolism and burns fat very quickly, if you can restrain yourself from the munchies, you can loose a lot of weight in a short amount of time, especially if you work out high.

you can check my sources on this, but I had heard that restrictions on thc didn't have as much to do with social norms. THC in your blood and urine can mask some of the tell-tale chemicals they look for when searching for EPO or HGH, forget which ones. Maybe they've got better screening methods now. the testing technology is probably what the official decision will come down to.

Well, my state college educated Health Teacher, as believable as that is. I trust him though, he seems to know his shit. But I mean it makes sense that it speeds up your metabolism thats why you feel tired and hungry.

so many damn myths, to be honest, I highly doubt cannabis has any effect on metabolic rates......it would be cool if it was true though

Source? A quick use of common sense and every study ever made about inhaling smoke/fumes into your lungs tells me you're wrong. And please explain relative moderation, it seems to be a very subjective term?

dude, studies have shown thc kills dead and/or dieing cells, so thc in itself is not bad for your lungs, its the smoking of heated vapors that is harmful to your lungs; smoking anything isnt great for your lungs. As will said, moderation is key, theres no specifics on how much you should smoke, if you excersise regularly, the effects of smoking cannabis will be even less....if you're that worried about it vape.

Oh No! Duz this mean Timmy Wallnutz will do a marijuanas and OD the TVs across tha world!?!?!? :''''''(.

I would really hope this wouldnt change anything. If you wouldnt quit smoking weed to compete in the olympics to represent your country in skiing then you have some problems.

Did you really even read my post dude? I implied that smoking anything is definitely not good for you. But compared to something legal like cigarettes, I wouldn't described the damage caused by weed smoke as 'terrible.' it's still hard on your lungs, but to a much more mild degree. There was actually a recent study that showed that smoking weed in moderation (in this case about 1 joint per week) actually can increase lung capacity. If I weren't on mobile I would link it. Of course many weed smokers smoke more than 1 J a week, so it certainly isn't good for the lungs. But the drinking that many athletes probably do isn't easy on their bodies either, so why does it matter?

its not like skiing is the only sport that will have the rules changed. Really this is a good thing to do, not so people competing can actually smoke weed, but so if they were around somewhere where weed was being smoked they would test for a false positive. Im pretty sure something like that happened to a snowboarder in one of the last few olympics, and he got disqualified.

i wanna see someone take a bong rip at the top of their run, stomp the run, win gold, take another rip at the bottom before stepping atop the podium to accept the gold all redeyed n cheezin hahahahah
