Weather sealed DSLRs...

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I was wondering if anyone could comment on "weather sealed" or "weather resistant" DSLRs like the Canon 7D vs. a lower models like the T3i?

Specifically, shooting while it's snowing or very cold out. I'm guessing protecting the lens is the priority...
 
threads, i'm getting a 60d but how will that handle when it's snowing or someone sprays me when i film powder?
 
I use a 7D, and it is considered weather sealed. I have used it in negative temperatures and 100 degree weather. I have also used it in snow and light rain. It has worked fine. No water got inside the battery compartment or output ports. You need to use a weather sealed lens though to complete the sealing. Water can get in between the lens and camera I believe. Water will also get into a non weather sealed lens.
 
my 5d3 has been in several rain/snow conditions and still tanks. With a properly sealed lens, it's a beast! I've been horrified with the amount of water/snow on it but it still turns on!

 
buy both weather sealed glass and bodies (L lenses and "pro" bodies) and you dont have to worry about anything

buy a shitty t3i and that piece of crap tamron that everyone always recommends and the chance of moisture getting in them goes up quite a bit

you can pour a bottle of water on a full sealed system, try to do that with a cheap kit and it will die
 
hmmmm, anyone with non-weather sealed dslrs had any problems? guess i'll stay with a 60d and be really carfeul
 
a buddy of mine (mball on here) broke his t2i due to moisture from skiing, no he's using a 60d, which is built better but still is not sealed.

It's not a huge problem really, just be smart about when you use your gear.
 
I've got a T2i and have never had any problems using it while it is snowing lightly. I have never used it in the rain or heavy snow as I know the limitations of the camera. Also, if you shoot when it is pretty cold out, keep it in a bag when you bring it inside so that it can warm up gradually as I have heard about people having condensation problems in various places when they bring it from cold to to inside quickly. Just take care of it, and know that if you decide to shoot in wet conditions there could be consequences.
 
My t2i has done well so far in the snow, obviously you have to careful though, mine does seem to have a problem with the cold though, when I go to turn it off it says that the sensor is being cleaned as usual but then it freezes at that screen and I have to pop the battery to get it to work
 
I used my t2i in rain, and dumping snow, like at 3rd shift this year, no issues... Yet

should be fine shooting in heavy snow and light rain, unless you manage to drop your camera into pow or a lake lol

"weather sealed" is an understatement
 
I have a 60D and have put it through absolute hell. Filming in negative 40 degrees in BC, to pounding wet heavy snow, and filming in the Baker rainforest all spring and i have never had a problem.

That being said, I have a friend who shoots on a 7D and his is always getting a Temperature error on shoots in the cold and hot on the same days my 60D has no problems. Not sure if he just got a shit 7D, but from what I have experienced I would not trade my 60D for a 7d anytime soon(for video purposes at least).
 
An equivalent comparison of powder and a lake is dropping a camera off a skyscraper, and dropping it onto a bed from a metre.
 
You should get off your high horse. I have seen you post so many times bashing peoples camera gear. Not everyone has money for top of the line gear.

There is nothing 'shitty' about a T3i and the Tamron lens,sure there are a lot better systems but if its what someone can afford then they should be stoked on it. The t3i is a great first camera.
 
my only complaint about my gh2. I love the quality, but I get very nervous when shooting on the hill if it is more than a flurry or something. I know it won't shatter or melt from a single snowflake, but I know that it not being sealed means no guarantees
 
it's not even that people don't have money, it's that L lenses are a waste of money for videographers. frankly all canon lenses are kind of a waste of money imo.

OP, cameras are designed to be used outside. i've used my T2i in blizzards and rain and it's been completely fine. as long as you aren't going to be dropping it in water or using it in downpours, it should be ok. just be smart and cover the camera when you aren't recording.
 
Things that are shitty about a tamron 17-50:

-build quality

-telescoping front element

-focus ring

-optical clarity

-CA

-auto focus speed

-filter size

Things that are bad about the t series cameras:

-plastic

-low light performance

-AF

-crop sensor(not that big a deal)

-no top LCD

-SD cards (cf is faster/more durable)

Things they have going for them: price

The t3i does make a good first camera, I had an old xti as mine, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of downsides to it.
 
Just because you think they're shitty from your dip shit photog opinion doesn't mean other people shouldn't use them. I'm a "professional" and i use the tamron 17-50 because it works very well for video and you can't beat the price. I don't need a $900 dollar 17-55 with IS and fast AF because I shoot video. Stop imposing your snobby photo opinion on the amateur video kids on ns.
 
Fuck me then. what the fuck have i been doing using my shitty t2i and Tamron lens. i guess ill just throw them out and drop like 10k on some REAL camera equipment. ill just go ask my mommy if she can grab some money from the money tree...

PS You may be "professional," but you're definitely the bottom of the barrel in the "professional" world.
 
My pentax was completely weather sealed and fucking awesome.. I accidentally dropped it into a pool for maybe 5 seconds and it was totally fine.

My 60D has worked great filming on the mountain even when it's been dumping out, or foggy as shit, and even when I've taked an T3i and/or a T4i out on really wet days, they were still fine. I just threw a towel on them when it was real bad.
 
I don't care what your "opinion" about me is but I'm trying to prove a point to Thomas that he imposes his snobby photo opinion on armature video related subject and no one cares that he shoots full frame and has L lenses. You don't need L lenses for filming, period.
 
Also, in regards to what Thomas says about buying weather sealed L glass and full frame and all of that.

Not all of us have thousands to drop on gear with no backup. For the price of a 17-40L lens, you could buy like 5 tamron 17-55's... or have 2 T3i's and 2 Tamron 17-55's and get mad angles, or have a full backup in which case one gets jacked.

Full frame is nice. L glass is awesome. but it's far from necessary for the grand majority of everyone and that's the bottom line.
 
I just hate that he belittles people because they have a t2i and a tamron 17-50. Some kids dont have over $1000 bucks but they wanna take photos so they get a dslr that does video too. For video, there is honestly no point to have any HDDSLR other than a t2i or maybe a 60d. 5dm3 is an upgrade but at 3k for the body, if you're into video, you might as well invest in a real video camera. (inb4 some dumb kid goes BUT BUT they used 5ds in HOLLYWOOD MOVIEZ)
 
For that price, I'd buy a black magic cinema camera over a 5D3 any fucking day for video. And Still have like 300 bones left for other shit and I can still use my Canon glass without even needing an adapter or anything.

In the meantime, my 60D and a host of nice lenses will get me by quite well. As with any kid that has a T2i and a tamron 17-50.
 
I meant to include the gh2/gh3 but thats a little different story vs the canon HDDSLR which is more what we were talking about.

If I only had $1000 to spend, id be getting a gh2 no doubt. If i only had $3000 to spend id be getting a gh3, I wouldnt even consider a BMCC, its meh to me, id rather run a gh3 setup. But, if you can cough up the cash I think the fs100 is the best camera you can buy for under $5000, just IMO but thats how I feel about it.
 
Yeah, I was just thinking of a direct price comparison that used exactly the same glass.

What about a VG900? Full frame as well, and exactly the same price? Gives you that super shallow DOF that every single 5d3 filmer freaks out and jizzes all over their floor over... (that said, what... only 24fps framerate, right?)
 
FF is bullshit for video, its absolutely pointless now that cameras have such better iso performance. the 5d was literally the best because it had the best low light but now it doesnt. All FF does is make it so your tele lenses are shorter and you can do a less wide lens like a 24mm vs a 17mm but with lenses like the tokina 11-16 its not a big deal to have a 1.6, 1.5, or 2x crop. I am considering picking up a gh3 just to shoot tele in the future so I don't have to buy a lens over like 300mm.
 
Nobody with a T2i for video should feel like they have an inferior piece of equipment. Even though (back to the original question) they aren't weather sealed, you can get REAL weather sealing for them in the form of either a plastic hefty bag style rain sleeve, or going all out and getting full weather protective cases.

The T2i and T3i are absolutely fantastic cameras for video - weather sealing or not... and if you do decide that you NEED weather sealing, and can only afford either of these cameras, go for a Pentax like a K30 or an older K-7, since they are fantastically weather sealed and offer video quality that is right up there with the Rebels.
 
My 5D3 is a beast, and I've heard the same thing about the 7D. Odds are, if you do anything to the camera outside of dropping it from heights and submerging it in salt water/sand...I think you'll be good. Mine has survived numerous drops in lakes and rivers and outside of some superficial scratches, it's firing away just as good.
 
Agreed but you know how much thats gonna cost? way too much IMO whats really hood is rhe gh2/gh3 with the tele crop mode, i hope more companies start doing that.
