Wearing Nice Shit to class

I'm in college and I just feel more comfortable and confident when I wear expensive shirts. Is that bad?

I mean, a lot of people just wear sweats to class, but I like how I look in Polo.

The habit/trend has given me several nicknames over my years at college

[ polo prince, prince of polo, pony boy ]

Does this send the wrong message?

Join a fraternity, you'll feel right at home.

I wore comfortable clothes to class. Shorts and t-shirts, but if you are more comfortable in those kind of clothes, go for it.

God damnit, wear whatever the hell you want. Do you really need to ask a bunch of strangers on an internet forum for their approval of how you like to dress? Jesus Christ.

If you're earning a reputation based solely on a brand of clothing you wear, you're doing something wrong. There's nothing wrong with looking respectable in class, but maybe wearing 4 separate articles of clothing with horses on them is a bit much...

This.

Get some polo (small p) shirts and wear them if it's what you like, but becoming so attached to a brand that you get multiple nicknames related to it just screams that you are trying to impress people and think this is the way to go about it (whether that's true or not).

Nikes or Sperrys. Underarmour ankle socks. Jcrew/Polo shorts. Top brand Buttondown or plain tee shirt. Watch.

Nothing wrong with looking nice. It makes me feel better when I get up the 5 extra minutes early each day to dress well for class. You only go a few times a week, so might as well look good for it.

Feels great at the end of the day, coming home and putting on bball shorts, an undershirt and some fuckin slippers to lounge out.

I agree with what's been said above. There's a difference between looking nice all the time and branding yourself with a single name. Do the former.

Best bet is to go and get some sweats and shit that match what the school gives the football team. Girls will assume you are on the football team and be on your dick. Or better yet, be on the football team.

dress well, it doesnt hrt. I like dressing nicely though at times it aint easy

also stop hating on frats and believing all the bullshit

I wouldnt exactly call this "nice"

But to OP:

I always feel sort of out of place too. I try to look good 3-4 days out of the week while everyone else is walking around campus in tshirts, sweat pants, and sneakers. I rarely see other people that dress well. I try not to worry about it though, If wearing nice clothes is your thing then do it.

I wouldn't call Polo expensive, more something along these lines: mediocre with too much visible branding.

1.) Polo is not expensive nor is it "nice".

2.) You're going to class to learn, not to impress people.

3.) I wear sweats & hoodies to class often because they are more comfortable. (P.S these sweats & hoodies are all designer not champion & shit... more expensive than your polo shirts)

4.) I feel bad for you. Becoming synonymous with Polo is not something to be proud of.

5.) Then again, it's you dressing yourself. If you want to look like a Cape Cod frat boy then be my guest.

^ the only thing lamer than wearing polo everyday is wearing designer sweatpants. Youre an even bigger douche than the OP

1. Now im not one for "Polo," but Ralph Lauren isnt exactly cheap... peruse their website for a little and you will quickly figure that out.

2. a lot of people tend to pay better attention and behave better in class when they are dressing the part as well. One of the reasons private schools have uniforms.

3. I dont know why you would pay so much money for sweats. No one is going to look at you in sweat pants and a sweat shirt and be like "damn, that kid looks good. those sweat pants probably cost him like 150 dollars."

4. Ralph Lauren is a very large and universally respected clothing company. There is nothing to be ashamed about when wearing their clothes

5. assuming you're some hypebeast that doesnt know how to dress properly?

All the ladies wanna fuck the guy who wears designer sweatpants.. That's why all the Persian dudes at my school pull so much ass.

I'll throw in some nice jeans and a decent shirt if I know I'll need to be speaking in front of the class that day, but other than that, it's sweatpants or b-ball shorts erryday.

i think it depends on how other people treat it. my university is kinda small and the town is famous for skiing/snowboarding, so most people are just casual. so i think its horseshit to wear a shirt with a suit or whatever stuff you see when all others arent.

1.) Ralph Lauren is cheap. On top of that, it can be found at every Marshalls or TJ Maxx is large quantities. If you want expensive I can name off plenty designers for you.

2.) That's subjective. Granted though, I do wear what one would call "nicer" clothes to class, but to take time out of my morning to find a proper outfit is not something I will do.

3.) It's simple: Quality & comfort. A pair of Thom Browne or Alexander Wang sweats made in Italy are of better quality & comfort than your typical champion sweats from Walmart. Not only that, the aesthetic & fit is far more superior.

4.) Ralph Lauren is respected by people who don't know how to dress & don't know much about fashion. Suit's are pretty much the only commendable thing coming out of the RL house in respect to RTW. In addition, RL Black Label is more appropriate & on the higher end spectrum, just not RL itself.

5.) LOL LOL far from a hypebeast. I don't wear anything that is quote unquote "hyped".

There are a lot of people being dicks in this thread, but I totally know what you mean. I do the same thing and it is worth it in my opinion (at least for me).

The biggest and most noticeable difference at first is the confidence boost you immediately get, which is huge when it comes to social interaction or even just building up some confidence.

The clothing also draws girls because they see two things, A- They see that you take care of yourself and give a shit B-The dudes prob got money and a future. (confidence is also KEY in getting girls, so the combination helps.)

And you just look like a more respectable and refined person all around, the teacher will definitely notice and most likely be better to you, especially if you're not a socially awkward shitbag and participate in class.

And lets be real.... suns out, thighs gotta be out. Wearing some seersucker shorts > basketball shorts. Just as ventilated, but look a hundred times better

Not trying to say a teacher will like you more for dressing nice, but they will respect you more. They woulda gotten their asses beaten with yardsticks had they worn half the shit some kids wear to class these days

1.) Ralph Lauren is a bit expensive than most stuff that you see at Hollister, Abercrombie, and American Eagle have in their clearance sections. And you think Polo is cheap? I had to pay $20 for a t-shirt one time. The only reason TJMaxx and Marshall's sells Polo is because they buy surplus stuff from Polo.

2.) People dress nicely in Polo instead of what you wear. It doesn't take long for men to get dressed in the morning. Damn, I'll wear a button-up shirt to class if I want to.

3.)Oooh, you say that other clothing is better than Polo? You sound politically incorrect.

4.) Ralph Lauren is worn by anyone who can afford it, compared to your $50 shirts, and it is considered fashion.

5.)Go back to school. SOURCE: Urban Dictionary.

1. Sneakerheads who only rock hyped up stuff to get props b/c they got no self worth or sense of style.

Not if it refers to your horse-like penis.

If you're being made fun of for being preppy though, good hahaha... Just kidding. Sort of.

Idk, all the international kids at my school ( large international population) are stuck on Hollister, Abercrombie, and AE haha

Wear what you like.

It used to be a common thing for people to dress relatively nice to school on account that it was a sign of respect to your professor.

Aside from that, it's so funny to hear what's "hip" on the east coast. Just saying it's different although not my preference.

op has self esteem issues and is probably scared of girls

Haha are you kids kidding me right now saying polo isn't nice? Like for kids in college, at our age, I say it is very fucking nice.

Okay compared to what fucking designer shit from Armani then okay sure... But why the fuck would anyone our age be wearing shit like that. If you do you are just going to look like a rich fucking douchebag whose parents have too much money that they don't know what to do with it.

Nothing wrong with dressing up for class, although I would try and diversify my clothing brands if you have a nickname for one, that sounds so tryhard.

dressing up nice for class makes everyone think you are a preppy doucher unless you are wearing a suit and tie with a briefcase in which case you are clearly just a giant nerd

You didn't even quote the OP. Haha and doing shit that makes you feel good is a bad thing I guess in your mind.... Guess everyone who works out is insecure and have girl issues.

Re-reading through this thread and I have one thing to say:

Enjoy the ability to wear sweats and hoodies and shit when you want. My hoodies and favorite lounging clothes just fucking sit in my closet now. Being constantly in professional attire is nice cause you can look good and feel good about it, but I get home, take it off, sit in my underwear for an hour, and go to bed. I would love nothing more than to buy all of these bomb ass hoodies that I see an know that I'll actually wear them rather than knowing there are only two occasions I get to wear them: maybe weekends and skiing.

Can I come back to college?

Armani is overpriced bling wear for douches.

If you want to look like a walking billboard, get Armani.

1.) Once again, RL is not expensive. If you wear Hollister or Abercrombie & AE then you must still be a little child or you're sexually frustrated. $20 is not a lot for a tee... LOL i have tees that cost 15x more than that. Shit, I even had a shirt that cost 40x that.

2.) ok

3.) ok

4.) RL is basic & for basic people that like to attract basic women.

5.) I am in school. I don't wear any of your typical sneakers bud. I wear Rick Owens, Margiela, Balenciaga, Kris Van Assche, Dior Homme.. none of that Jordan bullshit you're probably about.

Once again having your parents pay for your nice clothing doesn't mean that a $20 shirt isn't expensive for the majority of individuals. Seeing as how we are talking about college kids here, not people who have real jobs yet, $20+ is quite a bit of money seeing as how your living expenses (assuming you pay for tuition) is going to be absurdly high.

So yea you came into this thread trying to brag about all this fancy shit you're wearing but you are just coming off as a conceited pretentious douche. Now if you paid for all that shit with your own hard earned money then more power to you, nothing wrong with dressing up. But i am 99% sure you didn't maybe if you did you wouldn't think a $20 shirt is "cheap".

1.) I once paid $20 for a plain t-shirt, which at most places you can get for less than $15 in my area. I'm only in high school, not a little kid that you perceive me to be.

2.) RL isn't that basic. I only own one tee that's Polo.

3.) I don't wear Jordans. I wear Vans and Nike SB. You sound like a snooty rich hipster because you can name designers that no one knows here and doesn't really give a damn about. Why don't you go cry to your rich parents on you fancy iPhone 5 about how we all dissed you.

Speaking as someone who has worn every brand you're hyping here, you sound like a huge douche label whore. Like, seriously, just dropping designer names is meaningless.

Rick Owens makes nice clothes sometimes, but you can look like a total idiot wearing DDunks pretty easily, so who cares if you own Rick sneakers.

Balenciaga makes more shit than they do purchase-worthy clothes. What is the most noteworthy thing that label has ever done? Glow in the dark sneakers?

KVA is a clusterfuck most of the time, enough said. I would estimate less than 5% of the population of people who actually care about clothes could get away with a KVA wardrobe. 95% would just look like idiots.

Dior Homme is often basically KVA's idea of what Hedi Slimane would think was cool. The quality's middling.

Margiela is design team - i.e. it's a team of people employed by the parent company trying to imitate the look and feel of a Margiela collection. "Okay guys, what colour 5 zip should we release this season? OOOOH how about a silk one!"

Basically all you've said here is you spend a lot of money on clothes (unless you're just buying shit secondhand on ebay, superfuture and stylezeitgeist). Cool, but that means absolutely nothing with respect to whether you know what you're talking about or what you're doing. Any trust fund kid can spend an evening on the internet and end up decking himself out in Julius and Attachment, but they're probably just wasting a lot of money.

To take it a step further, the fact that you made this post and dropped these names without any context, as if saying "I wear Rick" means something in and of itself, suggests that you've newly discovered the world of FASHUNZ and want to use it to sound somehow culturally superior, and you don't actually know your shit.

So enough of that.

To everyone else: He was right about one thing: Polo RL shirts are not "nice". They're just polo shirts with a pony embroidered into them by a machine in China. There is nothing particularly WRONG with this, it's how everyone in this industry does business. It's how they survive and thrive.

Polo DOES make some nice things - their suits are made in Italy by Corneliani, their shoes are mostly Crockett & Jones (I'm wearing a shell pair while typing this), the label has some outstanding knitwear (which usually doesn't have a polo pony on it, FYI).

The polo shirts, meanwhile, is basically their money-maker. They make those shirts for pennies and sell them at huge margins to people who want to pay for a logo on their chest, and this makes up for the relatively SMALL margins they make on other stuff. For example, their profit on a handknit sweater that retails for, say, $500.00, or a suit for $2000.00, might be 30% or something, whereas the markup on those Polos is like... 1000%. But, they HAVE to keep making the lower margin items to maintain the brand's image and cachet as "luxurious", or whatever they're trying to convey.

All clothing companies have to do this. They need the suckers to buy the cash-producing items to be able to fund the rest of what they make. Scarves, perfume, cuff links, t shirts, etc, there's lots of "high margin" items that are used to do this so that when you balance it all out the company's profitable. A lot of the "high fashion" brands, whatever that means, actually lose money on half of their collection and have to make up the difference by selling cologne or something.

As long as it fits, I don't give a shit. I don't give a shit what you wear in the first place to class or school. I just pick up whatever I see on the floor. I see kids at my school try to dress up and it looks like shit because the clothes are horribly fitting.
